Completely unfazed by having six long lenses pointed at it, this roadrunner was intent on finding a meal. Zanjero Park, Phoenix, AZ
Many people complain about the large and ugly Sphinx Moth Caterpillars. I say, "Get yourself a Roadrunner."

This roadrunner was sticking its head and neck up from a creek bank just 30 feet away and I had a 600mm lens.
Greater roadrunners are pretty big birds with a length of up to two feet. About half of their body length is made up of their tail feathers, giving them a very special appearance. Roadrunners hunt their prey on foot, chasing them fast at speeds of up to 20mph (32km/h). This is the same individual that I posted about three weeks ago, just from a different angle.
This obliging Roadrunner gave me an eye-level pose. And I thanked him!

I was standing still at the edge of a pond and this guy came walking toward me. He paused for a second then kept on going. Seen at the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, Arizona, USA.
If I go to Arizona and I don't see a roadrunner... I don't really count it as a trip to Arizona.
Desert Botanical Garden (Phoenix, AZ)
Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is most noted for thousands of over-wintering Sandhill Cranes and waterfowl. We weren't expecting to see a Greater Roadrunner during our visit back in 2017, but sure enough, this guy made an appearance next to the auto tour route.

A Greater Roadrunner spreads its wings to absorb some warmth from the morning sun after a chilly desert night.
We had good roadrunner karma over the last couple of weeks in southern Arizona...always enjoyable to observe them scampering around among the cacti doing their best to avoid being photographed.
Just hanging around the parking lot of the San Joaquin Wetlands Preserve, when I drove up. Awesome place for birdng.
Irvine, Ca. May, 2023.
We have a pair of Roadrunners living on the property. Yesterday I saw them headed for the pond and went and quickly grabbed my camera. I had an ASP-C lens on a FF camera but it turned out OK. I did a crop to bring her up closer. They are such quick birds.
This guy caught a lizard for lunch as was running across our back yard while I was setting out our lunch. Confidence??? Probably...
