Ponte Miguel Torga, uma obra de engenharia significativa que liga Peso da Régua à margem oposta do rio Douro, concluída em 1997. Com uma extensão de 900 metros e uma altura de 90 metros, esta ponte rodoviária é parte do viaduto da autoestrada A24, projetada pelo engenheiro Armando Rito. Destaca-se pela sua forma curvilínea e pela integração harmoniosa na paisagem dos socalcos vinhateiros, considerados Património Mundial da UNESCO desde 2001. Esta região vitícola, conhecida pela produção do Vinho do Porto, é caracterizada por socalcos construídos ao longo dos séculos para maximizar o cultivo em terreno montanhoso. A ponte, que homenageia o escritor Miguel Torga, desempenha um papel crucial na mobilidade e conectividade da região, cruzando um território de difícil acesso até ao século XX. Em 1997, recebeu o Prémio de Engenharia da I Bienal Ibero-Americana de Engenharia e Arquitetura pela sua inovação e dificuldade tecnológica.

The Airport Trail Tunnel is a 620 metre tunnel that runs under the new Calgary International Airport runway and will extend Airport Trail from Barlow Trail to 36 Street N.E. The cost for the construction of this tunnel is $295 million

 

Tunnel interesting facts

During tunnel construction over 600,000 cubic metres of earth and rock was excavated.

 

12,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel was installed, equivalent to about thirty 747 airplanes.

 

A total of 58,000 cubic metres of concrete was poured during the construction of the tunnel.

 

Thirty-two 100-horsepower exhaust jet fans, weighing 2,000 pounds each, and 1,380 lighting fixtures were installed onto the ceiling of the tunnel.

International Road Congresses are organised by PIRAC (Permanent International Association of Road Congresses) who were established at Paris in 1909. The first International Road Congress was held in 1908 which brought together delegations from many countries to discuss problems with regards to newly evolving road systems.

 

At that time motor cars were few and most of the road infrastructure was constructed for horse-drawn traffic but with the development of pneumatic tyres, it was widely recognised that their use was totally incompatible with the current roads. Pneumatic tyres would literally disintegrate the road surfaces and new methods of metalling road surfaces were being developed. Before the First World War, France was the leading country for technical developments in road construction and provided a model of excellence for other countries to follow.

 

PIARC still exists today and provides a forum for its member countries to share information and experiences in the field of road infrastructure and road transport.
