I start a new series on 22 Jan 2008 there was an Ag Ka Matam or Fire Matam at the Khoja Shia cemetery , one of the most picturesque and beautifully maintained cemetery.Even the dead souls here are satisfied in their eternal repose.The Khoja community leaves no stone unturned to spend lavishly on the upkeep of the dead.
As I had come here very early I decided to shoot the surroundings and the Roza, the small Imambargah here.
The fire ramp is prepared here by Safdar and his gang from Bhavnagar..they are the best in laying up the ramp that takes meticulousness, and skill.
Riyaz one of the guys told me the story behind the fire matam..
The story goes a certain ruler in Burma did not like the Shias taking out Alams and doing Azadari and mourning for Imam Hussain, to stop them from doing this he placed embers of coal in the path of the processionists , and the mourners of Hussain bravely walked over it with their Alams and continued on their way.This impressed the ruler he relented and Ag Ka Matam or fire matam found its way to Lucknow from where it spread to other cities of India.
The fire Matam takes place at Bandra Supari Talao, at Mira Road , and the famous one at Hussain Tekri Jaorah Madhya Pradesh in Chelum 40th day of Hazrat Imam Hussains Martyrdom.
On 6th Moharam it is held at Bada imambada in Lucknow.
But the most well prepared and carefully organised are those of Kazmain and Diyanuthdaulah in Lucknow on Athvi..the last segment when the mourning period of two months eight days of the Shias comes to an end.
And I can assure you if a Shia Momin has not seen the Athvi of Lucknow he has really missed the most beautiful event of Moharam..The Chup Tazia of Lucknow moves out from Shia College in old time Nawabi pomp grandeur and splendour, elephants amary, and silence just the vocal strains of Ghabrayegi Zainab redered by the Lucknowi nohakars , and personally I felt you could just be swept away in a flood of unstoppable tears.. and ths Juloos is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Bibi Zainab..
Well back to the Khoja Kabrastan, I met thing young kid Ali who was videreographing the Matam like me, and when I asked him, he said he was shooting this for his father in United States.This is the fervour of Shia kids, the backbone of our religiosity without the blinkers placed on their eyes by bigotry or parochialism.

I was very lucky today
This evening I went to repair my waist pouch with Riyaz who has a bag suitcase stall opp Balaji Bandra Hill road.
I got my work done hopped into a ricksha to pick up black and white body fits at a mall at Linking Road.
From Linking road I took a ricksha got of in front of Cell City I removed my waist pouch to pay the ricksha fare while the ricksha guy was chatting with me I stepped out with my stuff I had taken a step and the ricksha was about to leave when some guys told me I had left my stuff in the ricksha it was my waist pouch on the ricksha black seat it had merged in its blackness.
I thanked the guys local Shia boys.. I had my pan card and other things in my waist pouch
I am becoming forgetful that puts the fear of God into me a few days back I was about to leave my bag in a local train.. Luckily some guys bought it to my notice.
I had bought lycra jersies to play tennis and it's just impossible to play in them as the weather at Bandra is very hot humid in the mornings .
Akbar Bhai who supplies my cotton body fits says there is no stock in the market the bodyfits cost Rs190 and last me for a long time.
I managed to get a black and a white cotton ones but not stretch .
Than from Hill Road I walk through St Peter Road to the Bazar buying fruits for the house.
Eveytime I come home I shower as sweat causes fungal infection .
The grandkids have gone on a holiday so the house is very quiet.
Wife goes for Majlis with her lady friends.
My film assignment might get delayed so I will decide where to go to shoot Chehlum.

My life long desire has to shoot Idd Namaz at Agra Delhi Ajmer but it remains unfulfilled so I shoot close to home I had shot the Azad Maidan Idd Namaz almost 10 years back, but in all honesty shooting the Bandra Station Road Namaz is what I prefer and it is walking distance from where I stay I know all the people and the organizers so it has become a habit rather than a choice.
One place I can imagine with hordes of Humanity is the Jumma Masjid at Lucknow very close to a lot of shanties.
If I did not have a camera I would have not shot all this, ad I know a lot of friends with high end cameras who dont shoot anything at all, so it is strange world out there and the camera and photography is a matter of taste you inherit at birth or from your guru and you cultivate it like the musician however good you are or have a sonorous voice.This is known as Riyaz,

So in a way pictures the kind I shoot you wont see in newspapers inorder to shoot for newspapers you should be a master in shooting crap , I am learning just that by shooting garbage dumps in around Bandra this genre of my photography is known as Garbage Porn it titillates your base instincts though because the Municipality and the residents who throw garbage wear swine flu masks or blinkers they dot see it so I show all this to the rest of the wide cyber world.
Bandra some parts are the filthiest and nothing will ever change it when Marziya my two and a half year od grand daughter turns three I will start teaching her to shoot the garbage dumps of Bandra the greatest lesson in life and photography.
I also wish computers and photography and blogging be made compulsory at KG level..
I already began teaching my daughter all three before she was two year old ..so Marziya is a page on Facebook with her Gmail Twitter accout and her own website on Word Press.
