The Tye River is a 35.4-mile-long tributary of the James River in central Virginia in the United States. The river Quoich flows down from it's source high on Beinn a Bhuird in quite a gentle way (unless it is in spate after heavy rain), until it reaches the Devil's Punchbowl and the Linn of Quoich. This is the waterfall alongside the Devil's Punchbowl, which is a circular hole cut into the rock (behind me in this picture) by the rushing water when the river is in spate. Just downstream from here the water rushes through a deep slot in the rock that is only a couple of feet wide, the Linn of Quoich, before calming down again to join up with the River Dee a bit further downstream.

I decided to go for the waterfall as I rather liked the dappled effect of quite strong sunlight breaking through the surrounding trees - sunlight being a bit of a novelty on this trip....

Scotland, 2016.

With so many people being advised or even ordered to stay at home, I thought it might be a good idea to share some old shots of the mystical Scottish Highlands. There's nothing like a little bit of daydreaming when the options are limited.

There's more on www.chm-photography.com.

Enjoy!

This is a close-up HDR photo of amazingly intricate patterns that have formed in the ice in the shallow channels beside the river. The exquisite detail and reflections present in the layers of the ice become even more evident when being lingeringly seen in full screen in slideshow.

I placed a bouquet of river grass in front of a black background and made this image while intentionally moving the camera vertically.

Yesterday we explored yet another area new for us - the Hisley Woods near Bovey Tracey in Dartmoor National Park. The fabulous circular walk led us along the River Bovey for a bit and we spent some time enjoying the secluded location that served as the motif for my photo. The woodland is truly jungle-like in places with ivy growing along old oak trees, fern and even overgrown 13th century medieval farm houses!

I quite like how the long exposure blurrs some of the foliage - it's like the forest is coming to life in one photo!

The last look on the river Soča (this time in the opposite direction, with the mountains at background) during our way back after seeing the Kozjak Waterfall :)

Soča is a 137-kilometre long river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy. An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres. Due to its emerald-green water, the river is marketed as "The Emerald Beauty." It is said to be one of the rare rivers in the world that retain such a colour throughout their length. The river is also well known for the marble trout (Salmo marmoratus); this species is native to rivers of the northern Adriatic basin, and it lives in the upper course of the river. This species is currently endangered, due to the introduction of other non-indigenous trout species sometime between World War I and World War II.

Rivers have always attracted me. The charm is perhaps in their continuous passing while remaining unchanged, in their leaving while remaining, in their being a sort of physical representation of history, which is, as it passes. Rivers are History.

Maybe life is like a river that goes to the sea. It didn't go where intended to go, but it ended up where it needed to be
