On May 14th, 2025, a comprehensive Hazard, Vulnerability, and Risk Assessment (HVRA) was conducted in As-Saan village, located in Salamieh, Hama, as part of the Emergency Management (EM) unit. The activity targeted four locations, resulting in four assessments that covered a total of 2,000 individuals. The HVRA followed a structured methodology consisting of four stages: Offsite Assessment, Onsite Assessment, Validation/Analysis, and Results. This systematic process was designed to identify hazards and evaluate the risks most likely to impact the community, including threats to people, property, infrastructure, industry, natural resources, and vulnerable environments. Each of the four settlements assessed will receive a hazard map and a detailed HVRA report, based on the data and insights gathered during the fieldwork and analysis phases. These tools will support both community-level and institutional disaster preparedness by pinpointing areas of vulnerability and enabling more targeted risk mitigation strategies. This activity is a component of the Emergency Management (EM) unit, which focuses on enhancing the readiness and response capacity of communities facing natural disasters and complex emergencies. It is funded by FOCUS and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF)

On 4 August 2025 in Aleppo, as part of the Emergency Management (EM) project funded by UN-Habitat and implemented by AKF, a workshop was held to develop Disaster Risk Management Plans (DRMP) for three neighborhoods—Ard Alsabagh, Karm Aldadaa, and Alkalasieh—based on Hazard, Vulnerability, and Risk Assessment (HVRA) reports. The DRMP serves as a comprehensive community-level tool to help residents identify, analyze, and monitor risks while enabling them to develop strategies for mitigating the impact of disasters and fostering mutual support during emergencies. The HVRA, conducted using a harmonized methodology and including offsite assessment, onsite assessment, validation, analysis, and results, produced detailed hazard maps and risk assessment reports for each neighborhood. This participatory process is designed to strengthen local disaster preparedness and resilience, aligning with the broader objectives of the EM project to build safer and more responsive communities in high-risk areas.

Homs | 29 July 2025

As part of the Emergency Management (EM) project, a comprehensive workshop was conducted in Homs to develop Disaster Risk Management Plans (DRMP) for three targeted neighborhoods: Al-Khaldieh, Jouret Alshiah, and Alqosour. This workshop also featured the sharing and discussion of Hazard, Vulnerability, and Risk Assessment (HVRA) reports and hazard maps specific to each neighborhood. The DRMP is a vital, community-based document aimed at enabling residents to actively participate in identifying, analyzing, and monitoring disaster risks. It empowers communities to formulate strategic responses to mitigate these risks and strengthens local cooperation in times of crisis. The HVRA, conducted at the settlement level using a harmonized methodology, involves four key stages: Offsite Assessment, Onsite Assessment, Validation/Analysis, and Results. This systematic process identifies the hazards most likely to affect the community and evaluates their impact on people, property, infrastructure, industry, and the environment. The final outputs are neighborhood-specific hazard maps and HVRA reports, which directly inform the DRMP development. This initiative is part of the broader intervention by the EM unit to enhance community preparedness, response, and resilience capacities. The activity is funded under UNHS001 and implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), reinforcing collaborative efforts to support local disaster risk management.
