SUNDAY EXCURSION - THE BEATLES ASHRAM

Beatles Ashram, also known as Chaurasi Kutia in Rishikesh was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as a center of spreading the practice of Yoga and meditation in 1960s.

This ashram gained popularity once the legendary Beatles band decided to study Transcendental Meditation in India in 1968. The Maharishi stopped using this ashram in 1970s as the lease was about to expire and thereafter the land was reclaimed by the Uttarakhand government and was closed for around 3 decades. In 2012, Californian street artist Pan Trinity Das visited Rishikesh and left behind many beautiful yoga inspired murals and eventually this Ashram was opened for public viewing in 2015.

Not far from Haridwar, an idyllic ashram with a temple and fruit trees and images of seven holy rishis. But we are tired after 4 days, and prefer to rest on the marble steps

Manu clicks the elders of the family at the spot where the ropeway drops and picks up passengers at Mansa Devi temple

Rishikesh is among the most evocative tourist destinations, loved by the people of almost all age groups. You will spark your senses by visiting this magical place. The soothing fragrance of the spirituality in the thick air of the city makes you go crazy. Away from the clamor, the city is rich in natural beauty with tons of attractions matching your interest.

Complete with ads and giddy feelings, the ropeway takes one from Haridwar's riverside to the Mansa Devi temple up in the mountains. A special package gets you there faster than a cheaper one that involves a three-hour wait. Else you have to trek it up. Lots of pilgrims who crush you at the temple queue.

Whitewater rafting is popular in Rishikesh, and a spot called Kaudiyala a little upstream -- if you call THAT a stream -- is where much of the action begins. Travel shops in Rishikesh promise rafting, trekking, yoga, massage, stress therapy, meditation and salvation. You get to choose

As the clock strikes 7 p.m., the crowds get bigger at Har-ki-pauri (the Lord's Doorsteps/steps) for the daily evening ritual of the aarti.

Rishikesh has monkeys, tourist touts and young men who ride motorbikes over the Lakshman Jhoola. Lord Lakshman is keen, but obviously has jurisdiction problems and must cope with outdated technology. Bows and arrows are not quite it, and besides, he is tired after helping brother look for bhabhiji.

It is a nice, clean temple, peaceful. But the heat was awful.

Moni and Mansvini pedal close to centre point at the lake. Actually, there is Hindi film music playing loud and chat and samosa sold on the side. Tourists come and go. Families mill about. The walk to the lake is a steep downhills climb. You sweat more on the way back. But the ride is good.

Patient and restless at once, the thronging devout wait for the aarti to begin, clutching prayers and flowers and little wicks to light. Some start it early.

An affectionate inmate showed jackfruit trees to Manu, who posed near one of the features at the ashram, which also houses a gau-shala..or an abode for cows

Displayed ware include edible chaats of exotic kachaloo. Hot tea is preferable to other brews. They never mess up the tea-- usually

Manasvini munches corn on on the cab, also known as bhutta, at the Gun Hill in Mussorie. We cannot spot the colonial guns anymore, but only toy pistols and guns that offer tourists and kids a chance to test their targeting skills.

You pedal for 15 minutes, and that seems longer if you are the person on the shores, clicking pictures.

Crowds flock and light holy fires and let them float on environmentally-friendly green-leafe boats packed with flowers.

Haridwar is a place where we remember and pay respect to our ancestors. This one takes the lineage a bit further up Evolution. Want a DNA test?

Lakshman Jhoola rocks! -- That is its main value proposition. The river, enriched by an early monsoon, moves in muddy spate below. Majestic view.

Madhuri and Moni made it, while the others, tired and bored, preferred to salute the many gods from a distance.

Start of the journey. Ma reads the paper, Madhavan poses. Shatadbi is a good train where they ply you with food, tea and biscuits in airconditioned comfort.

Mansvini has fun. She buys a magic kit and strange toys that make her day. Pulling this one gives more joy than sipping a lousy cup of hot chocolate.

Manasvini prefers the three wheels and its backseat to the BMW -- thus far. It gives her a chance to see many sights from new viewpoints and make comments occasionally

They strike a pose from one of the 13 storeys of a temple in which the number of gods and counters to match must make it the Lord's answer to retail malls. Plenty of gods to choose from!

Manu insists the moustachioed man who affectionately taught her to shoot (rather well!) looks like an army colonel. He is flattered -- and a bit richer because we have more than our share of shots at 10 rupees a set. No prizes, only fun.

She got'em right most of the time. She shoots balloons, we shoot pics.

In case you did not notice, there are two bulky men riding the rickshaw, whose poor puller is served with money and guilt by the rather heavy passengers, namely the uncle and father of the young passenger who is smiling

It is a 30-minute uphill trek to the Gun Hill from the Mall where our hotel is. Place is a bit shabby but very much alive. Juice? Coffee? If that look on Moni's face shows regret at having ordered a bad brew, it may not be far from the truth.
