... a photo of the brides engagement ring at a recent wedding I photographed. This photo is best viewed large.

Creative: I tried to bring in background elements from the day... the colors, textures and objects. The flower was a part of her floral arrangement, so I pulled things together and created a bit of a backdrop (to on-lookers it looks like I'm making a mess...a mess I clean up I might add), and then place the ring in the shot.

Camera Setup: Photographed with a Canon 30D using a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro sitting on a Manfrotto 3021BPRO tripod w/ 322RC2 ballhead (which isn't that hot for macro work) with the center extension put horizontally so that I could get up and over the ring. Triggered with a Canon remote release cable to reduce camera shake.

Lighting: Two Canon 580EX flashes to the right and left of the camera (like just a few inches away from the lens). One flash difused with a Gary Fong Cloud LightSphere which acts as a massive softbox positioned above a bit. The other flash was on it's side with a STO-FEN OmniBounce and functioned as the key light, to get lower and get light under a bit more. Flashes triggered by a Canon ST-E2 with everything (flashes and camera) set in manual.

NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr's 'Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day, which makes me somewhat sad as the actual resulting photos didn't make it, ha! You can see all of my photo's that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

It's not until next month but my husband and I will be celebrating our 30 year anniversary. I asked him to leave his ring home today so I could practice ring shots, not that I have any weddings lined up. As I have aged my fingers have changed because of a bit of arthritis and though I might sometimes be able to slip my ring on, once the day goes by getting it off can be challenging. If I get it sized to go over my knuckle, I'm afraid will roll around on my finger, anyone else have this issue? How do you solve it? I'd like to wear my ring again.

Close up Macro shot that I took of wedding rings at a recent wedding I photographed for Davis Photography.

Overall I was pretty happy with it, although I think if I were to shoot it again I would have put a candle behind to bring a warmer color to the composition (something I liked a lot about this other macro ring shot I did a few months back) and then kept the shutter open longer so that the shot could have had more of the background light come in to also help warm things up.

Tech Details: Taken with a Canon 20D and 100mm f/2.8 macro lens using remote cable release cord. Camera mounted on a Manfrotto 3021BPRO tripod with 322RC2 ballhead.

Lighting Details: Two Canon 580EX flashes triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter. Both flashes were difused, one with a Gary Fong Lightsphere Cloud that was placed above the rings (maybe two feet above) with the other sitting on it's side off to the left (by about six inches) difused with a STO-FEN OmniBounce.

a ring photo inside a rose that was sandwiched in between layers on the wedding cake.

Tech Info: Canon 5D, out on the horizontal arm of a Manfrotto tripod with a 322RC2 ballhead using a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Lighting provided by two Canon 580EX flash units, one to camera right slightly above the ring diffused into a Gary Fong Cloud difuser. The other flash was directly above the camera pointing down difused with a STO-FEN OmniBounce. Flashes were triggered with a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter, all exposure and flash settings were in manual.

Anyone with at least 2 kids will agree than some Monday mornings are blessings. After this weekend of shooting an Easter Egg hunt at the crack of dawn Saturday, followed by shopping, shooting a wedding for 7 hours, only to be at Walmart & Rite Aid shopping for Easter Eggs & candy and hiding them until 1am, followed by waking up a few hours later to have the kids find them, rehide them a few times, then head to a BBQ outside chasing them around, process all 1000 wedding & easter egg hunt photos, get demolished at Wii Sports by Caiden…..

Coming in Monday to work is about as relaxing as it gets…

Hope your weekend was entertaining as well.

Ring shot from Saturday’s wedding. The flower girl helped me out on this one, so a big thanks to her and Eileen for having me be the photographer for her wedding! I hope they have a blast in Costa Rica and bring back some amazing shots.

Creative: I tried to bring in background elements from the day... the colors, textures and objects. The flower was a part of her floral arrangement, and the pink ribbon was holding it together with the buttons being used to fill vases as weight, etc. So I pulled things together and created a bit of a backdrop (to on-lookers it looks like I'm making a mess...a mess I clean up I might add), and then place the ring in the shot.

It’s funny how when we’re young we embrace the romantic vision of being married to our best friend as the best possible life scenario. But as I go through life and look around, I really don’t see many married couples still in love with their best friend. They get married, have kids, get a mortgage, both working, dealing with finances, different opinion about décor, vacations, what to eat and the marriage becomes routine. Then there’s marriage counseling, 7-year itch, and that thought of, “maybe I can do better… I want that spark again… I’m bored… “

The best part of marriage is the beauty found in the details. The random complements. The unexpected “go have fun with your friends tonight”. Emptying the dishwasher before she wakes up. Don’t wait for your spouse to step-up their game, do it yourself and be content with the reward of their smile.

Wedding rings from a wedding my wife and I recently shot... I only had about 5 minutes to set the shot up, get the shot and get the rings back before the Bride/Groom left the reception. I wish I would have had a bit more time, I would have perhaps stopped down a bit more for a wider DoF and a few other minor things, but overall I was really happy withh the shot.

Tech Info: Shot with a Canon 20D and a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens on a Manfrotto Tripod and head, two Canon 580EX flashes off to the sides with STO-FEN OmniBounces on them triggered by a Canon ST-E2 transmitter. In the background there was a red candle which provides some of the color and the golden hues from the other color temp. of the candle light.

The bride a couple weddings back really had a soft spot for McDonald's French Fries. And who could blame her? As much as I love the fries at In & Out Burger, I agree that nothing beats fresh, hot McDonald's French Fries. So when I got to their hotel room to get photos of them getting ready and saw at least 5 boxes of large french fries laying all around, I knew I instantly had a prop to use for their ring photos.

Like I said, I've been having a lot of fun with ring shots lately. The best part is I got to eat the cookie.

I loves me some ring shots.

Used off-camera light to far right to control the specular highlights on the grand piano backdrop (as in: I didn't want any).

I have a strange fear of starfish. I don’t know what image I have in my head, but I just have this thing where a starfish would jump on my arm, and there are all these suction cup things on its little starfish arms, which would suck onto my arm, and then it’s little succubus mouth with razor sharp teeth would bore holes into my arm in a repetitive chomping method. Plus no eyes??

Unrealistic?

Regardless of it being a monster, superstition, person, health, finances or just some random worldly item that I fear, it’s hard to just get over them and put on a happy face. But like I said before, happiness is a choice. I’d love to say I don’t fear anything, but I do. Some people use punching bags to deal with their fears, others alcohol, gardening or other vices. Photography helps me. I don’t do a whole lot of shooting for pleasure lately, which is both a blessing and an obstacle. But if we use these things to cover up the pain or fear instead of dealing with it, it won’t get any better. Dealing with it head-on is the only way to deal with it. But man is that hard.

A while ago I created a Facebook page dedicated to my wedding photography. I have a personal one too, but don’t feel comfortable just adding random people. But I figure that social media in one way or another has helped build my business to a great degree. I haven’t done any business directly from myspace or facebook but I know several people who have. My 2009 is pretty much booked, but… there’s always 2010. I already have 2 clients booked for Oct 2010. I hope someday in the future I’ll be able to photograph weddings for free.

I’ll update my blog with the rest of the photos from this wedding too eventually. There are only so many hours in a day, right?

RIng shot.

just a song in my heart.

I get all...numb

When she sings it's over

Such a strange numb

And it brings my knees to the earth

And God bless you all

For the song you sang us...

Another idea for a ring shot.

Isn't it?

Well apparently it is - my diamond_untrained eyes cannot make a difference between this and the next fake one but people tell me it is a big one.

My first PROPAH ring shot. Ever.

Info: Shot with Brendon's 100mm f3.5 Cosina stopped down to f8 and lit with a on-camera speedlight.

Now you can catch me on Facebook as well!

Found some cookie cutters, took some pictures.

great color combo on a Porsche GT3 at trackday on Salzburgring

Looking for a fun background for tonight's ring picture....we decided that one of the groomsmen's vest was the best bed and the button was a lifesaver!

Shot at ISO 200, f10, 1/200 of a second with a 60mm macro lens...using one SB-800 about camera and to the left through a 43" wescot diffuser folded and shoved in my face...thanks Mike!

Thanks, Steve, triggered with Nikon CLS from about 6 inches apart...and I always make sure to block the pop-up with my hand because even though it is set to off with a macro you get light spillage.

We captured this fun shot last weekend. Lighting is in the diffusion cup of the SB-900, the light was set super low @ 1/128th power for the under lighting. My camera is always set (for ring shots) to 1/200 at F11 and a secondary flash was off camera right shot through a napkin at 1/8 power.

Little did you know that I was actually born in Wisconsin. I still have relatives there, and one of them, Stephanie, my second-cousin, found me and asked me a couple months ago to come out and photograph her wedding. I said absolutely!

So everything went well. It was so great to see my aunt and uncle who I haven’t seen in many years. I haven’t seen my cousin or his wife, or my second cousin or anyone is such a long time. I loved being back in Wisconsin. Great food, beer, people, cheap homes, lots of barns & lighthouses, friendly… just everything was great. Except the weather. Snow in April? Not for me. I realize why my dad left. Beautiful but just can’t deal with that snow.

So while at the wedding, I wanted to get a few shots that just screamed Wisconsin Wedding using the objects iconified by the state. So I asked to shoot their rings, and after a few different ideas, thought what else screams Wisconsin more than cheese..? So, grabbed some real Wisconsin cheese, and there you have it.

Barns, lighthouses & more wedding shots all this week.

Sorry I have been a poop about commenting. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get into the details of the trip, the lack of sleep, almost getting snowed in, in Chicago, etc. I’ll try better today. :)

.... I practise!

With not one but two weddings we're gonna shoot later this year, Big Human and I are super excited. I was practising macro shots of my own ring bling and I got frustrated as in my first round of practise I could not get all the parts in focus that I wanted to be in focus. Then I woke up this morning and thought about something I'd read and in my second round I closed the aperture to f/8, f/11 or f/14. I rested the camera on the dining room table and chose a slower shutter speed. I like this way better than the blurry parts in the other shot.

If any of you have feedback or advice, it is greatly appreciated. I will not be offended the least if you point out how I can improve!

For the Karel lovers among you: yes, as soon as I turned my back on him, he ate one of the tulips. I am sure we will find that one later this evening, somewhere on the carpet. Silly cat :S

PS I know I should have polished my ring so it had looked better. When I lived in Ireland, the brand of dishwasher liquid we were using was called Fairy Liquid. I would have washed my ring with dishwasher soap if we had Fairy Liquid here too. Even dishwashing would be an enchanting experience ;) LOL
