The large piece is natural Mexican turquoise (Competos mine, Sonora) showing the typical pyrite inclusions. This is soft , very light blue turquoise often called "chalk turquoise" that must be stabilized before it is useful in jewelry. The blue nuggets around the rough have been stabilized in plastic resin. In a few cases the resin did not penetrate to the center of the nugget causing the paler center in the cracked open nuggets.

Crazed white magnesite beads, dyed blue-green magnesite and blue dyed magnesite. The crazing on the large flat and oval beads is particularly nice. My assumption is that the crazing is produced by heating and cooling in a bath of brown or black dye to produce the "matrix" or "spiderweb" lines. This material is often (but inaccurately) called "chalk turquoise."

Man made imitation malachite bead smashed by a hammer blow, one bead broke into 3 pieces. Very little was lost in the process as the bead can be reassembled into a complete bead. These beads were sold to us originally as "Synthetic malachite" but after some testing turned out to be entirely plastic.

Blocks of plastic imitation malachite in China.

14mm "Synthetic Malachite" beads shot with a flash. This material does not appear to be plastic or glass. A broken bead does not crack along the color bands nor does it have glass-like conchoidal fractures.

Typical imitation "block" malachite usually has very straight layers or has swirls as if it was mixed with with a stick like paint.

After testing we determined these to be imitation material, not synthetic.

Japanese Mosaic beads from the 1970's. Rings & Things sold them in our retail bead store in the 70's and 80's and made hundreds of earrings using them. As far as we know, they are only available as vintage goods, no new ones are forthcoming from Japan.

A 2 station crystal bead faceting machine in mainland China.

Based on a simple faceting machine like those used by US rockhound, this hand controlled machine produces beads similar to Swarovski. The rotating disc is shared by 2 workers. The outer part of the disc does the cutting and the inner part the polishing. The beads is moved back and forth and the head is turned from calibrated stop to stop by hand. Thus a hand faceted and hand polished bead. These beads are not tumble polished or fire polished. That would dull the sharp facets.

Interesting stone from HK Vendor, now carried by Rings & Things. Since first posted, we've learned that this is a soft stone, protected by a surface coating. We only know the sellers descriptive name as "Impression stone." We suspect it is as soft as talc without the coating.

This is our new addition to our family. Bear is an Australian Shepherd and is just about 5 months old. She learns quick. She'll sit, wait, stay, come and "sort of" dance for her treats. Lots yet to learn. Her brother Jake is a big help teaching her things and is very patient with her. She gets along with our cats very well, of course she wants to play with them!

Umber is mostly in charge.

Caught this woodpecker on a tree outside our back deck yesterday morning. He must have been hungry because he didn't scare easy. Generally he's gone when you open the door.
