-430ex in diy ringlight adapter

After using the ringlight at the photowalking event I had to try making one of the DIY ringlights. I still have some kinks to work out but I'm happy with the results. This picture was done with it and another flash pointed at a nearby white wall.

Ring light 101. A few hours and $40 later this is what I bring you.

A couple of machine screws though an angle and fastened with nuts were all it took to make a mounting bracket. The entire rig is light enough that I can actually tilt it a little on an umbrella bracket. Not pretty, but it works. I can hang a roll of gaffers tape off the excess bracket too. :) 400 total Christmas lights. They end up exposing at about 1/50th @ f/4 ISO 500 from 2 or so feet away. Not bad for a $20 investment. I cut 1/4" plywood in a 2 foot donut, then covered it with crinkly reflective wrapping paper. The lights were then stapled on...plug in and go!

Inspired by this:

theglobalphotographer.blogspot.com/2008/01/built-and-real...

first test shots with he ring-light i just built. still need to add diffusion.
