An ice boat racer prepares her boat for the upcoming race.

Not a whole lot of wind today, but that allowed me to get more pictures than I may have under faster sailing. A fun time out in the boat with the family.

The Bayou Teche Wooden Boat Show at the Louisiana Black Bear Festival is held along the historic Bayou Teche in Franklin, LA. The Black Bear festival is held annually to honor and educate attendees about the endangered Louisiana black bear. All of the boats pictured are hand built, mostly of wood from the Louisiana baldcypress. Many of the boats were built at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum in Madisonville, LA (lpbmm.org/), where classes are offered in boatbuilding and spaces under the 2nd floor museum can be rented by boat builders to work on their projects. Some craftsmen said they spent several years building their boats. Many just came to work on their boats in their spare time on weekends. One builder lives in Praireville, LA and traveled several hours from home each way to build his boat in Madisonville.

Madisonville, LA also hosts a fine Wooden Boat Festival each year in October (www.woodenboatfest.org/).

Rockingham is currently hosting some yacht racing. Not sure if it is just a club round, or a state event.

I was walking around Rockingham early enough that none of the yachts were on the water and liked the detail of the rigging.

Bishop Lifting Products, Inc. supplies wire rope, rigging hardware, blocks and sheave to marine construction companies.

The tack line begins at the tack grommet, loops through the lashing holding the mainsheet block to the

boom, then loops around the mast and is tied together on the front of the mast. This holds the corner of the sail tight to the end of the boom and keeps it close to the mast.

The safety downhaul prevents the mast from falling out of the canoe in the event of a capsize.

The foot lacing ends at the small grommet shown.

Ropes from multiple anchors equalised to meet at a big steel shackle securing a 'line-locker' with two steel rings. The saftey leash is attached to the line by two (seemless) steel rings.

july 5th - as Mr Johnny Rotten is on question time tonight I thought I would do him the honour of a song title pic. So, I nipped into Charlestown to take a picture of the rigging. I couldn't park easily so stopped on the double yellows and fired off some quickies. The light was appalling! this has an HDR effect on it which makes the best of a bad job. Thank goodness for the seagull adding a point of interest!

It's amazing that all those ropes have a purpose...

Rigging on a replica tall ship. Hobart. Tasmania.

One end is 105' above ground level, the other end is 70' above ground level. The ground slopes down about 10' between the 105' and the 70', so the drop in the line is about 45', and altitude at the house is about 85', a full 70' above my roof.

This really is a big sailing ship. We didn't really need to use the spinnaker but what the heck, it was fun to bring it out. Could have sailed anywhere with just the jib with the 10-15 knot winds.
