A riddle I thought up. Every picture has something hidden in it... and the four hidden things have a common theme.

Some Riddler goodies to match my current cosplay costume.

Ryan T. Riddle is a Dean’s Honored Graduate in Biochemistry. Ryan is also a member of the Dean’s Scholars Honors Program and has received several awards for his academic achievements. These include the Award for Excellence in Biochemistry Research and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center Director’s Associateship Program Award, which will allow him to pursue research in the food sciences at Ohio State University.

Ryan has taken his love of cooking and his love of science and combined them to help change the way we view our food. Since long before entering UT, Ryan has been a student of what we eat. When talking about the development of his twin passions, Ryan says, “I remember telling my sister, when I was a kid, that I wanted to grow up to be a ‘mathematical chef.’” Until coming to UT, however, he never imagined that he could combine in one degree his love for science and his passion for good food.

Ryan entered UT as a physics major, but he quickly changed focus when he learned how biochemistry aligned with his interest in food. “I’m fascinated with everything about food,” Ryan says, “but what’s most interesting to me is trying to answer basic questions about why things happen the way they do. What makes that Starbuck’s frappucino not separate? What is calcium disodium EDTA and why is it on the Mountain Dew label? That’s food chemistry.”

For the last two years Ryan has worked in the lab of Dr. Adrian Keatinge-Clay helping to develop a more efficient process of synthesizing molecules called polyketides. These molecules are created by bacteria and fungi and are often used as antibiotics, immunosuppressants, anti-cancer agents and other medicines. In the lab, Ryan and Dr. Keatinge-Clay are working to develop a method for synthesizing large quantities of these substances.

Ryan will go on to pursue a Master’s degree in food sciences at The Ohio State University in the fall. There he will be working in Dr. Steven Schwartz’s lab to investigate foods that have or can be engineered to have health-improving or preventative properties. For his book Ryan has selected Food Processing Technology: Principles and Practice by P.J. Fellows, Just Food by James McWilliams and The End of Food by Paul Roberts.

Another great coaster at Six Flags! Thoroughly enjoyable and I wish it never ended (well maybe for a bathroom break)!

A riddle one of the EFF staff has in their office.

Can you figure it out?

To start off, there aren't any hidden wires, it's a single wire running in series through both switches and both lights.

However, each of the lights is controlled independently by it's own switch.

How does it do it?

Riddle, the last of the Monster Hunter trio, has finally arrived at my house. After finally getting Nhim (the Fox) to talk to me with words, I derived that there was still one missing Monster Hunter. I was finally able to bring her here after much persuasion, because she is a go getter, and is more then fine with fighting monsters on her own without her team mates. She uses weapons to fight the monsters, unlike her fellows, and enjoys kicking the crap out of them whether they are friendly monsters or not.
