The life is really difficult for rickshaws-wallahs, weight to be pulled(fired) but also the heat and the pollution. Miserable conditions which reduce considerably their life expectancy. If you go in India do not hesitate to use their services(departments) and make without negotiating the price(prize) they deserve so much our RESPECT.

I have always observed that the life of a rickshaw-puller is very tough. It takes lot of power to pull people on the rickshaw (I had tried one many years back) and in absence of good diet, it becomes even more difficult, making them prone to diseases. A big share of their earning goes for paying the rent for the rickshaw and they end up sleeping on the roadside to save some money to send to their families back home.

There are nearly one million cycle rickshaws in the Delhi metro area, and almost all of them are operated by migrant workers. They swiftly negotiate the most crowded, and most congested narrow lanes of Old Delhi, where the bazaars are a labyrinth of narrow lanes, with auto rickshaws, motorcycles, scooters, cars, and trucks spewing out their exhaust mercilessly. In fact, Delhi, according to WHO has the worst air quality of any major city in the world. Particulate Matter, which is responsible for chronic respiratory diseases causing permanent damage to lungs, was found to be the highest in Delhi.

 

”He’s going to die right here in the street,” Dominique Lapierre wrote, some thirty years ago while narrating a story of another rickshaw wallah in Calcutta on his book, “City of Joy.” He continued, writing about their plight during the winter months, “Condemned to switching from the sweatbaths of a run to the cold of prolonged waiting, their undernourished bodies had little resistance. Many of them died.” This was written before all of the pollution that Indian cities generate now.

 

Today, the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris has brought the world leaders to the negotiating table. Mr. Narendra Modi, the PM of India is there as well. I am hopeful that these sensible leaders will realize that the overall welfare of our civilizations depends on taking care of all things human, including the environment, where these rickshaw wallahs have to work to make their ends meet.

Exhausted rickshaw pulller. Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, India. 2010

   

A waiting rickshaw wallah observes the passing of Indian Railways WDP-4 locomotive 40170 near Izzatnagar Junction station. The 4,500 hp air-braked locomotive was delivered from DLW (Diesel Locomotive Works) in April 2014 and represents the new breed of BG motive power to be seen. He may not have been considering it at the time but it is no doubt a considerable step up from the power generated when pedalling the much older generation rickshaw he is sat on!

Hand-pulled rickshaws were still to be seen in some areas of Kolkata in 2017 particularly in the narrow streets and lanes where buses and auto rickshaws didn't operate although they were not allowed to ply their trade along main roads.

The rickshaw pullers are also known as 'human horses' and in 2005 the state government of West Bengal planned to outlaw the practice and replace hand-pulled rickshaws with other modes of transport. Clearly it is taking some time to implement a total ban in practice!

This rickshaw puller was recorded crossing the busy Lenin Sarani Road and it is hoped his passengers were not travelling too far based on the total weight of his payload!

Gulshan Pourashabha was abolished in 1982. In 1984, Gulshan, along with Mirpur municipality, was absorbed into Dhaka.

 

The area was originally built with the purpose of being solely residential, however, over the years many commercial buildings have been set up.Gulshan is now a mix of a serene residential area and also a city centre with shopping malls and commercial buildings.The Gulshan city centre only consists of Gulshan,Baridhara and Banani.

Mr. Vijay Punjabi was born in Bombay and moved to Delhi when he was a child. After trying different odd jobs, he decided to be a cycle rickshaw wallah about 20 years ago, and he has been earning a living as one ever since. On this hot day in Old Delhi, he convinced me to take a ride on his cycle rickshaw. Though not fluent in English, which he learned by talking to foreign tourists, he was able to not only carry on a conversation but also joke with me, and be an expert guide that day.

Shahbagh is a major thana in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is a junction between two contrasting sections of the city, Old Dhaka and New Dhaka, which lie, respectively, to its south and north. Developed in the 17th century during Mughal rule in Bengal, when Old Dhaka was the provincial capital and a centre of the flourishing muslin industry, the neighbourhood was originally named Bagh-e-Badshahi (Persian for Garden of Kings), but later came to be called by the shortened name Shahbagh. In the mid-19th century, the Shahbag area was developed as New Dhaka became a provincial centre of the British Raj, ending a century of decline brought on by the passing of Mughal rule.

 

Shahbag is the location of the nation's leading educational and public institutions, including the University of Dhaka, the oldest and largest public university in Bangladesh. Shahbag also hosts many street markets and bazaars. Since Bangladesh achieved independence in 1971, the Shahbag area has become a venue for celebrating major festivals, such as the Bengali New Year and Basanta Utsab.

 

Shahbag's numerous ponds, palaces and gardens have inspired the work of writers, singers, and poets. With Dhaka University at its centre, the thana has been the origin of major political movements in the nation's 20th century history, including the All India Muslim Education Conference in 1905, which led to the All India Muslim League. In 1947, to both the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan; the Bengali Language Movement in 1952, which led to the recognition of Bengali as an official language of Pakistan; and the Six point movement in 1966, which led to the nation's independence. It was here, on 7 March 1971, that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered a historic speech calling for the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan, and here too, later that year, that the Pakistani Army surrendered in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The area has since become a staging ground for protests by students and other groups. It was the site of public protests by around 30,000 civilians on 8 February 2013, against a lenient ruling against war criminals.

I think I picked the craziest of all the cycle-rickshaw drivers to take me down to Assi Ghat....... he looks kind of sweet here but he obviously had dreams of being a Formula One racing driver, at one point I thought the whole rickshaw was going to tip over as he raced full pelt over a tilted drain cover to overtake a motorbike!!!!!!!

Under the guise of improving human rights but in actuality giving Calcutta a friendly face to foreign investors the Hand Rickshaw Wallahs of this city have been banned from earning their living since I visited in 2006.

Me in a rickshaw in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The temperature may well have been nudging 40 centigrade, but this is no excuse not to look ones best when out and about upcountry.

OK, it's a little staged and all, but here I am at my new job of rickshaw wallah in Manhattan, just stopped for a pee break at a friend's house. Matt was there and agreed to take my picture in exchange for my looking at a piece of cast-off furniture he was interested in.

The quintessential Autorickshaw Meter Ganesha. He's ubiquitous in Mumbai.

 

Sometimes painted on to the meter in a rudimentary manner, sometimes more detailed.

 

His job is to ensure that the Autorickshaw Meter keeps ticking, and that the Rickshawwallah makes enough moolah.
