While I know that pulling rickshaws is his means of living, I could not, cannot bring myself to sit in a rickshaw pulled by him or other rickshawallahs of Kolkata. I find it inhumane to sit on a rickshaw pulled by someone when I can walk faster..When asked to ride a rickshaw like this guy I met on the street of Kolkata, I asked them to have tea with me instead and I talk to them at length about their lives...

When you are in the streets roaming to fetch some shots, you can't just sneak towards your subject(s). They somehow manage to discover you! In those cases, grabbing their real expressions is so tough!

This "Rickshaw" puller was resting between his trips and I just couldn't be un-noticed! :-)

A bunch of rickshaw pullers waiting for passengers in the rains, in the city which was previously known as the city of rickshaws; but each day restrictions on rickshaws are being enforced, thus narrowing their scope.

Random rickshawpuller on the street who seemed fairly bemused when I popped my umbrella open to take a picture. Always fun.

Kolkata is the last city on earth to use enormous Chinese-style rickshaws pulled by men on foot. The rickshaws were introduced in the 19th century by Chinese traders and the British made it a legal form of transportation in 1919. The Communist government of West Bengal—concerned about its image as it positions Kolkata as a technology hub—placed a ban on the human-powered vehicles in late 2006 without no alternative jobs and no compensation package. Yet one can see these rickshaws still very much present in the suburbs of Kolkata. Here is a National Geographic article on the same.:- India’s Rickshaws

It was taken at C.R. Avenue in Kolkata. This was during the start of the rainy season in my city. From the morning there were a few spells of rain and hence this body of water at the road side, where the reflections of hand-pulled rickshaws drew my attention.

The diagonality of the reflections of the rickshaws and the over-head wire is something that appealed to my senses to take this photograph. Also the clouds in the sky made an interesting background of the reflection.

To my friends, those who are away from Kolkata: for the last three days there is continuous heavy shower. Many of the localities are drowned in water with boats sailing past the streets of the city. So the rainy season has set in. Kolkata has been transformed to second Venice :-).

Poor Rickshaw-pullers in Bangladesh saving themselves from the drizzling rain.

In Kolkata with this transportation known as the "Rickshaw puller" you simply don't need oil or engine. it works with the help of person pulling it, while the customers sitting behind. Most of the people staying there prefer to use this as it is not fast but it is easier to go into a narrow Vally's and you can easily escape free from the traffic jam's. This transportation would be known as the cheapest, safest and environment friendly transportation.

Looking for a passenger on a cold and misty morning.

Sometimes we become bored; works seem monotonous; life gets tiresome, tediously boring. And this is true for most of us. But do we know, a simple fun into work can make life simply better and enjoyable. So make fun while you work.

I shot this pic while i was visiting JU. These two guys were driving their van; and suddenly i dont know what came into their mind, they indulged lets have a race; and see who can drive faster? and they started driving fast, despite of their van carrying heavy loads.
