The power lines are actually the reason that there are still some rice paddies, below the line no construction is allowed, for obvious reasons...

Afternoon in soft backlight at Longsheng Rice Terraces, also called the Longji Rice Terraces.
They are located in Longsheng County, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Guilin, Guangxi, China.
We were happy to see this landscape just before the harvest, which was postponed for a few days due to a festival.

Outside Asia, Madagascar has the longest history of rice production. Wetland rice production systems are well developed and rice terraces are frequently found along the roads between Antananarivo and Antsirabe. Rice cultivation is found in almost all districts of the country.
Rice cultivation is the main livelihood in Bali. Wayan, a young Balinese man proudly presents the harvest on the road in front of a village temple. Many hands have harvested the rice and now it will be picked up for further processing.

Leaving the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo, from the south via the N7, one of the few paved roads (I don't say in a good condition) of Madagascar, in the direction of Antsirabe, the landscape changes quickly.
Hills and paddy fields are emerging, dotted with hamlets with houses with red brick walls and thatched roofs. It is the Highlands region. The people, "those who inhabit the heights" or Merina, are excellent farmers.
The Merina people, a Malayo-Indonesian ethnic group, use traditional methods to cultivate their rice paddies in the plains surrounding the villages.
Their language is the basis of the current and official Malagasy language.
Rice paddies now take up two-thirds of the country’s cultivated area.
Madagascar is the second-leading per capita consumer of rice in the world (about 246 pounds, or 112 kg, per capita per year, behind Myanmar at 462 pounds, or 210 kg), but it is not a major producer (producing 2.8 million tons, it ranks approximately twentieth in the world).

On the way between Da Nang and Hue, these rice paddies were flooded by heavy rains that came after the rainy season normally ends. Across the fields you can see a church, probably Catholic, and a school. About 10% of the population is Christian, mostly Catholic, from French colonial days.

We eat minced meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato placed on cooked rice.

. . . The view from the corner of Rice Road and Seeley Road this morning, just north of Kalkaska. The colors are spotty, with some trees bare, and others mostly green yet!
The weather today is also spotty, with sunshine, dark clouds, sprinkles, a brief downpour, and then repeat as needed!

Perched high in the hills of Guilin, the Longji—also known as the Longsheng Rice Terraces—offer a breathtaking landscape. This photo was captured at dawn from the terrace of our hotel, overlooking the mist-covered paddies as the first light touched the slopes. Reaching the spot required a one-kilometer walk, but every step was rewarded with a view well worth the effort.

Situate in alto tra le colline di Guilin, le Longji — conosciute anche come le terrazze di riso di Longsheng — offrono un paesaggio spettacolare. Questa foto è stata scattata all’alba dalla terrazza del nostro hotel, con lo sguardo che si perdeva tra le risaie avvolte nella nebbia mentre la prima luce del giorno accarezzava i pendii. Per raggiungere il punto di osservazione abbiamo percorso circa un chilometro, ma ogni passo è stato ripagato da una vista che valeva davvero la pena.
