Barred owls are secretive, yet common owls, named for the horizontal feather pattern or “bars” around their necks and large horizontal “bars” on their tails.

When autumn comes and summer goes

I will remember through November

What September knows

That nothing lasts forever and

Summer love moves on

So when the leaves begin to change

I find it sad but never strange

That you are all I can recall

When autumn comes

The sunset of 10/31/08 casts the colors of Halloween down on Rib Mountain and Lake Wausau near Wausau, Wisconsin. Various waterfowl rest on the water while on a break from their long trip south.

This upstanding Wisconsinite, Wisconsin's Rib Mountain, is a 4-miles-long (6.4 km long) quartzite ridge that was uncovered over many millions of years by erosion of the softer material (syenite) in which it was embedded. Rib Mountain stands 670 feet (204 meters) above surrounding terrain, and the western edge of the city of Wausau abuts the mountain's ESE base.

Radtke Point is located south of the Downtown Airport in Wausau, Wisconsin. It can be accessed from Grand Avenue in Schofield at the end of Radtke Street. This location also includes a small city park with a 20 foot bluff that offers great views of Rib Mountain and Lake Wausau.

The sky over Wausau, Wisconsin was overcast all day last Thursday, but a break in the clouds appeared just as the sun was about to set over Lake Wausau and Rib Mountain.

I ventured out on the ice of Lake Wausau to get this shot of the sun setting over Rib Mountain near Memorial Park in the southeast side of Wausau, Wisconsin.

The first sunset of the new year descends over Rib Mountain and Lake Wausau...

A fellow Flickr user from the Pacific Northwest, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/listorama], was enquiring about these strange green poles that were spotted in my photo of the chair lift. I looked through my photos to see if I had a better image of them, and found this one.

As for green poles, they are actually large "taps" that are plunged into the Wisconsin countryside that "tap" into the large beer aquifers that can be found throughout the state. The raw beer is then pumped out of the aquifers, and sent to the various local breweries for refining before it's safe for public consumption.

The tap on the left is pumping a nice vane of crisp pilsner, when the one the right is directly over a deposit of brown ale.

Lights are affixed atop the taps so that they can be easily found and identified during the long, cold, dark Wisconsin winters.

So there you have it.
