Cormorants are medium-to-large seabirds, the majority of which have mainly dark plumage. They are coastal birds rather than oceanic and some have colonized inland waterways. They range around the world except for the central Pacific islands. All are fish-eaters who dive from the surface. Under water they propel themselves with their feet.

The cormorants in this photograph appear to be the "Brandt's Cormorant" named for J.F. Brandt, a Russian naturalist who first described the bird in 1838. In California, Brandt's are common with over 75% of the world's population residing along the Pacific Coast from southern British Colombia southward to Baja, California.

Brandt's Cormorants are "colonial nesters" which means that they nest and breed in close proximity as a group, often sharing communal behaviors for the benefit of the entire group, including both adults and chicks. The male Brandt's Cormorant chooses the nest site and attracts the female to it. Once paired, they build a nest of seaweed, eelgrass, and algae, held together by droppings. The male gathers the nest material from the water, and the female builds the nest. Pairs may reuse the nest, adding more material to it each year. Both the male and female incubate the four eggs, and both regurgitate food for the young.

The bird feeders I had always let the food get wet, so I recycled an old water fountain belonging to Max, and fashioned a way to hold a tray of food inside. It took the robin about half a day to work it out, and the tits about two days. But it works, the small birds can eat their fill of the now-dry food, and the larger birds ignore it... maybe something to do with the glass butterfly ornament I have fastened on top... it wobbles in the breeze and stops them from landing on it.

What happens with an arts incubator meets Pittsburgh Black & Gold :) This is one of the buildings in that row that I posted yesterday. For my out of town friends, the colors of all of the Pittsburgh sports teams is black and gold, and our nickname, earned a century ago when the mills dominated our economy, is The Steel City. It clashes like crazy - but yet it works because it's happy.

It was made from recycled plastic bottles, strung on to wires. A brilliant idea. Sorry for the poor quality picture but I had to take this from a distance, through a fence. Best viewed large

The lovely flower was reused—it had fallen out of the planter and The Bear picked it up for me. The sweet little bud vase is also reused, it used to be a mini candle holder.

experimenting with reusing some lino blocks on monotype backgrounds, which I guess would make this a monoprint, or maybe not... Having some trouble with registration because the trees are that thick very rubbery and floppy easy carve stuff. It's much easier to get good registration with something rigid!

A late antique sarcophagus with a hunting scene on the side reused for the burial of Constance of Aragon (1179-1222), the first wife of the Holy Roman Frederick II and regent of Sicily from 1212-1220. Inscription: Sicanie regina fui Constantia coniunx Augusta. Hic habito nunc Federice tua (I was Constance queen of Sicily, wife, empress. Yours, I now lie here, Frederick). The inscription on the left corner of the lid is: Cataniae MCCXXII (At Catania 1222).

Not all grocery stores will allow you to bring your reusable bags but some do. Here in Ithaca Wegmans still allows this practice. However, it is important to keep these bags clean so I washed them and now I am drying them. They are on air dry because they’re made of plastic. If they don’t totally dry I will just hang them from the line in basement. Be safe out there!
