I love how this old brick warehouse has been transformed into offices. West Berkeley.

Happy Windows Wednesday!

234 Laurier

A retrofit of this 26-storey office tower - constructed in 1985 - included architectural, mechanical and electrical upgrades, transforming this Ottawa landmark to a modern and energy efficient building.

Formerly occupied by Export Development Canada (EDC), the building is now majority-occupied by Canadian tech firm Shopify.

Retro meets retrofit: The Novespace Air Zero G aircraft is seen here next to Douglas the 1962 VW Transporter. The two are in Paderborn, Germany for the 76th ESA Parabolic Flight Campaign.

The refitted A310 Air Zero G aircraft flies in parabolas that offer teams from various research institutes and universities altered states of gravity to perform experiments and technology demonstrations. Experiments span many disciplines including complex fluidics and human physiology, and this campaign is no exception.

Running from 25 June to 1 July, the 76th campaign features an experiment studying the effect of gravity on hydrodynamics to better protect spacecraft and science instruments from the temperature fluctuations in space; a study on how immune cells flow under the stress of spaceflight; an experiment studying spinal stiffness under microgravity to mitigate lumbar pain for both astronauts and patients on Earth, to name a few.

A typical parabolic flight campaign involves three flights and requires a week of on-site preparation. Each flight offers 31 periods of weightlessness. The aircraft can also fly in arcs that provide lunar or martian gravity levels by adjusting the angle of attack of the wings. Each flight of this particular campaign will split the gravity states, flying one third of parabolas at martian-G, one third at lunar-G, and one third at zero-G.

The aircraft flies close to maximum speed and pulls the nose up to a 45° angle, then cuts the power to fall over the top of the curve. Whilst falling freely the passengers and experiments experience around 20 seconds of microgravity, until the plane is angled 45° nose-down, before pulling out of the dive to level off with normal flight.

These “pull up” and “pull out” manoeuvres before and after the weightless period increase gravity inside the plane up to 2g, but that is just part of the ride, repeated every three minutes for almost two hours.

The campaign is the fourth to take place under Covid-19 restrictions. Despite measures loosening across Europe, participants and coordinators adapted to safety measures: PCR tests were required to enter Germany, as well as rapid antigen or RT LAMP tests each day for every participant. Facilities on the ground as well as on board are adapted to allow for social distancing and cleanliness requirements. Surgical masks are worn at all times, and movement is restricted during the flights.

University students can also take part in a parabolic flight campaign thanks to the ESA Education Office’s Fly Your Thesis! programme. Masters and PhD students can propose their experiment, and upon selection, will be supported in preparing their experiment for the campaign by ESA Academy, ESA and Novespace experts. The 2022 Call for Proposals is now open.

Tug boat in for some cleaning and upgrading. Some post-processing done on this to get some of the shadow detail on the bottom of the boat back.

The now closed Berkeley Pier.

Englewood, CO - This is inside a Black Hawk helicopter. At this facility, they retrofit military helicopters for civilian and state government uses. Eventually, these particular helicopters will be used for search and rescue missions, including fighting fires. They will be fitted with a tank capable of holding 1,000 gallons of water.

It was a surreal experience being inside the finished helicopter. It is extremely loud in the cockpit, and that's before the engines are even turned on. Why is it so loud? It's the fans that cool the screens and instrument panels. It sounds like a jet engine in there.

As for the instruments, the keyboard layout is NOT in the QUERTY format. I asked them why that is and the response was, "because engineers like to mess with pilots".

Retrofit under-crown fender mount, press-fit into the butted end of the steerer. One M5 boss in a tiny steel inset, plus a pair of holes for drainage or passing wires.

This bike uses a center mounted brake, so the existing crown holes will be used as guides to drill through the waist section of this PlugNut to allow normal passage of the centerbolt.

Starting to retrofit my collection of Brickmania kits, one at a time, beginning with my favorite - the Priest.

I love the new Brickmania Track Links. There is just no comparison to the old Lego chain links.

And, yes, I know I have probably mounted mine facing the wrong way, and yes, I know the hatch on the Priest is not mounted properly. ;)

EDIT: Dan from BrickMania says I mounted the treads facing in the correct orientation. Hooray for 50:50 odds. ;)

- Restoration inspired by the limited-edition ’Jogging’

- Attractively finished, with large sunroof and leather interior

- Can be registered in the Netherlands

A legend that was an inseparable part of the French automotive scene from the 1960s to the 1990s, Renault’s first front-wheel drive car, the Renault 4, introduced a rear tailgate, long-travel suspension and an excellent load capacity. In 2021, to celebrate the model’s 60th anniversary, the manufacturer had five cars converted to electric power.

It chose versions symbolising the model, which were completely restored by the staff at the Collection before being sent to EV Europe, a Dutch specialist which carried out the conversion, replacing the petrol engine by an electric motor and installing the batteries. The motor is directly connected to the gearbox, which is locked in third, with an electrical inverter providing reverse gear. A screen has been added on the left-hand side of the dashboard to display the information specific to the electric powertrain. The car produces about 30bhp and has a range of approximately 100km.

This Renault 4 has been rebuilt in the style of the ‘Jogging’ limited edition which came out in 1981 and was aimed at young buyers; only 5000 units were produced, and they are impossible to find nowadays. Finished in white with blue accents, it has a large blue sunroof and superb leather upholstery in the same colour. The tailgate has a ‘Renault 4, 60 Anniversary’ logo and the odometer is reading just over 1000km, doubtless the distance it has covered since being converted. The car can only be registered in the Netherlands. This car offers the ease of use of an EV and is sure to appeal to Renault 4 enthusiasts with a liking for its limited-edition models.

British Airways continues the process of refurbishing their Boeing 777s despite a rather difficult S22 schedule as demand isn't able to keep pace with a surge in passenger numbers; not surprising as staff retention hasn't been able to come close to pre-pandemic levels of demand.

The vast majority of their Boeing 777-200ERs have been refurbished which is almost complete as the 3-class examples based at London Heathrow undergo work at their Cardiff heavy maintenance facility. Very recently, British Airways has completed their London Gatwick-based Boeing 777-200ER fleet refurbishment with the last one completed as recently as July 2022.

British Airways began the process of refurbishing their Boeing 777-300ER fleet in mid-2021 to match the 4 end-of-line examples that were delivered back in 2020. So far, 3 examples have since been refurbished; overall the seat count has reduced from 299 to 254 seats but feature a significantly higher percentage of premium seating to match the now withdrawn Boeing 747-400 fleet.

At present, 2 further Boeing 777-300ERs are currently at Cardiff awaiting the fitting of their new cabins prior to re-entering service, but there will be a while yet until there is uniformity.

Currently, British Airways operates 59 Boeing 777s, which includes 43 Boeing 777-200ERs and 16 Boeing 777-300ERs. British Airways have 18 Boeing 777-9s on-order.

Sierra Tango Bravo Hotel is one of 16 Boeing 777-300ERs operated by British Airways, delivered new to the flag-carrier on lease from BBAM on 19th October 2013 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GE90-115B engines.

This particular car, in the colours of Zity, a car-sharing firm, is a 1991 model and one of the last Renault 4s built, as sales came to an end the following year. It can only be registered in the Netherlands. It respects the model’s original appearance and will therefore enable its new owner to enjoy the inimitable looks of the famous Renault, combined with the ease of use and maintenance of an electric car.

The former Touring Club building, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, was recently renovated as an innovative science museum, the SESI Lab. The upper level southeast corner is now a delightful open-air café.

This is how the workbench ends up when doing a 'slight' retrofit to one of the older models.

For those who are familiar with my models it's not difficult to spot which under undergoes a reshape. I think you should keep models to long but some do have something special like this one however new (and useful) elements were introduced during the five years I got this one now.
