Not sure if this was an older male but it had white feathering around its beak and eye not noticed before??
Nice to see these beautiful finches close up and out in the open rather than skulking in the hedges. They are extremely shy and retiring so very happy to get shots of these in the beautiful Autumn sunshine .

This was the female of female that was accompanying the previous male bully I have put on here.
Nice to see these beautiful finches close up and out in the open rather than skulking in the hedges. They are extremely shy and retiring so very happy to get shots of this bird perched out in the open on a lichen covered branch. Was fortunate that the floor was covered in snow and really enhanced the colour of the bird taking away the shadows on the plumage

Retiring and watching a part of me fade away. Watching what has made me into an adult fade away. Looking at myself saying that chapter is over, but hopeful for the next chapter. We've got this.

This raptor is a retiring inhabitant of mangrove swamps, where it preys mainly on crabs. Distributed from southern Arizona to Ecuador.

Fairly common, but often retiring, in tropical lowlands of both drier and more humid areas. Occurs across much of South America, from Colombia to Argentina. Can be found from sea level to around 1,500 m elevation. Favors forest edge, second growth thickets, hedges, and tangles, especially with morning glory flowers, which it munches quietly. Note plain bluish-gray coloration with warm tawny vent and short white eyebrow. Immature looks slightly different, with a yellowish wash to the face and upperparts. Listen for sweet song with slurred whistles. (eBird)

This great tanager came to the lodge's feeding station, providing us with great looks at a usually skulky bird.

... not! This is another Osteospermum flower from my garden and very different from the last one I posted. All of the Osteospermum plants, after seeming to fade, have come back to life and are flowering profusely again. I believe this variety is called 'Whirligig' and it's pretty wild. :)
Before retiring, I lived in the city of Surgut, northern Siberia. With real winter and real frost. Now I live in the south of Russia, where it rarely snows, and even in winter, sometimes the temperature is above zero Celsius. Recently, I was looking through photos taken in Surgut in winter. Today I'm posting photos from 2005.
This shy and retiring barn blushed bright red when I said I wanted to take its picture. I don’t think anyone has been using it recently.
Taken off a rural road in Richmond County, Virginia.
My sunflowers came and went so quickly this year. This is one that was in the process of opening up.
Lightened slightly
Much better large please xx
I had been observing this Buck defend a sizeable Harem of Doe all afternoon with quite a few rutting rounds. He was well rewarded with the female attention he got by holding off the competition. A slow autumnal amble back to the woods for a rest was certainly on the cards ( until next year ).
Normally shy and retiring this bird has spent the winter in an urban park in North Tyneside.
Despite having only a few square metres of reeds to hide in it still took three visits for it to show for me, the last visit just before the virus lockdowns there was some fantastic late afternoon sunshine.
Since retiring I start each day, sitting with a book my pup Leica on my lap and a latte.

Mediobogdum Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass in Lake District has some great slightly rebuilt ruins. The light on the evening here was a splendid Sun banquet lighting the way to older notions and even initiation upon ladder of lights that illuminated the ways to become enlightened. It is an amazing location to find history and to enjoy mystery.

Tail code 079 Panavia Tornado GR4 waits for clearance to enter the main threshold at 05 end of the runway to make a one way trip to RAF Leeming to go into storage. This was the second Tornado to permanently depart Lossiemouth on this day and leaves us with 3 more aircraft to depart in the coming days.
Could not resist the calmness and quietness of the river while crossing this bridge going back to the hotel, so I had to stop to take this very last shot before retiring for the night.
My first sighting this year of the very shy and retiring Cuckoo today, out on Dartmoor with grey sky's and not much in the way of sun light, still...managed to come away with a record shot :)

The last film I took before 'retiring' from rail photography entailed a trip to the West Country. It had been coming a long time - the previous film I'd exposed on railway 'stuff' was just over 12 months before. Aside from the very occasional trip out for old times sake, the next time I'd seriously use a camera again on the UK network would be 2011, and it would be digital.
For this trip, the weather seemed to reflect the mood although the train, a BRC&W built class 118 3-car suburban DMU, made a spirited enough start from Newton Abbot. Plymouth allocated set P462 was doing the honours, and is signalled for the Paignton line.
In the background the engine shed is still standing although by now disconnected, at least at this end. The rest of the sidings look suspiciously empty, save for what may be a fuel tank wagon.
Just visible at right are the carriages painted in the colours of the David & Charles Publishing Company, who occupied premises around the station at the time and used the carriages for storage purposes. The nearest coach looks like it could be of LNER vintage and, if so, is presumably one of those now restored and in use on the Severn Valley Railway.
The engine shed, carriage and wagon works were eventually demolished and the land adjacent to Torquay Road used for a new Aldi supermarket. Happily the splendid GWR signal gantry survived the inevitable resignalling, and is now installed as a non-working exhibit on Aldi's land for everyone to enjoy and, for those of a certain age, to maybe dream.

Since retiring at the start of the year, Kim has been mostly reshuffling things in the house.
Then she got this grow light and hydroponics setup and has been starting flowers and veggies inside.
She's been transplanting what she has started indoors to outside.
Since retiring a month ago, I've been doing a lot more bird photography, getting into the field almost every day. Wednesdays have been Desert Botanical Garden Day. I took a zillion shots of female Costa's Hummingbirds as they were there in abundance. Not as flashy as the male counterparts, but I had a blast photographing them. Just for comparison, I pasted a shot of a male Costa's hummingbird I took last spring in the first comment.
