Tower Rock is an erosional remnant left as a result of Mississippi River channel shifts. The rock is composed of limestone of the Devonian period formed some 400 million years ago. Surrounding softer rocks were eroded away by the Mississippi River leaving the rock which stands about 60 feet above the average river level.

Tower Rock, also known as Grand Tower, is a rock formation and landmark island in the Mississippi River, in Brazeau Township, Perry County, Missouri, near the town of Wittenberg, Missouri, and across the river from Grand Tower, Illinois.

Tower Rock has also been dubbed with many names over the centuries: Cap de Roche, Cap St. Croix la Tour, La Roche de la Croix, Rock of St. Cosme, Castle Rock and Devil's Tower.[2]

The earliest mention by Europeans of this island is by French missionary Jacques Marquette in 1673:

"...we found ourselves at a river called ouaboukigou, The mouth of which is at the 36th degree of latitude. Before reaching it, we passed by a Place that is dreaded by the Savages, because they believe that a manitou is there, — that is to say, a demon, — that devours travelers; and The savages, who wished to divert us from our undertaking, warned us against it. This is the demon: there is a small cove, surrounded by rocks 20 feet high, into which The whole Current of the river rushes; and, being pushed back against the waters following It, and checked by an Island near by, the Current is Compelled to pass through a narrow Channel. This is not done without a violent Struggle between all these waters, which force one another back, or without a great din, which inspires terror in the savages...."

Another early mention of the rock was by French-Canadian seminarian priests: fathers Montigny, Davion and St. Cosme, who planted a cross on the rock in 1698.[3]

A ridge directly across the river from the island is named Devil's Backbone.

Meriwether Lewis mentions the island in his journals, stating that rivermen who passed the rock would celebrate in a way similar to sailors crossing the equator, by raising a drink of spirits.

Lutherans from Germany considered this island their Plymouth Rock, for here they landed, after seeking a place where they could practice religious freedom.

In a Nov. 6, 2003, article in the Southern Illinoisan newspaper, Mike Keeley, manager of the Tower Rock National Historic Site for the Missouri Department of Conservation, said that it's possible to walk out to Tower Rock every year or so because of low water levels on the river

Okay, I received a lot of questions on dying resin so I wanted to make a list of some tips for anyone wanting to try this. I'm no expert but these are some observations I made. Also, check out the dying threads on DOA for additional info.

🔸Make sure to throughly clean all the resin you wish to dye, but don't use anything abrasive. Soap, water, and a soft brush works well. If you have sanded areas on your doll, you'll need to sand all over or the dye will attach more readily to the sanded areas making the dye uneven. 🔸The pot you use should be stainless steal, aluminum, enamel, or glass and you shouldn't use that pot to cook with afterwards. Hit up goodwill if you don't have a pot to ruin. This may sound silly, but test and make sure your pot is big enough to submerge all your pieces.🔸Don't use tongs or anything that could put pressure on the part when dying. Resin softens when heated so you can easily warp your resin if you're not careful. For best results, suspend the piece loosely with a wire. Don't drop it in the vat, touching the bottom of the pot could cause unevenness. Wire, clamps, thick rubber gloves are your friends.

🔸THE DYE SMELLS PRETTY BAD. Wear a mask and eye protection so you're not breathing flippin dye. 🔸A rolling boil is optimal but I used just below boiling so there wasn't as much splashing and steam produced. It took me 3 minutes to achieve the darkest colors. 🔸Keep the temPERATURE EVEN. Get that water going and maintain the boil you want for at least 30 mins. If you start dying when the water boils, the temperature may still be rising causing the following pieces to be darker.

🔸Use a stopwatch and make a test piece. Write down your times. It's important to note that most of the dye will be taken into the resin in your first 30 seconds. In that regard, halving the time will not half the results. 🔸Stir the vat often and keep the piece you're dying in motion. For a gradient, just dip the part but keep in moving in and out. If you'd like the dye in the certain area you can literally paint it on. I used a water color paintbrush, soaked it in the boiling dye, and held it to the areas I wanted dyed. You can see the results in areas like the thumb webbing.

SN/NC: Syagrus romanzoffiana, Arecaceae Family

This is a palm with an identity crisis! A few decades ago the queen palm was assigned the name Cocos plumosa. During the late sixties and seventies most experts began referring to it as Arecastrum romanzoffianum. Now this queen has been placed in the genus Syagrus, the species name became romanzoffiana - hopefully Syagrus romanzoffiana will stick! The Queen palm is mostly found in Subtropical areas. It was once very popular as a garden tree; but in areas like Southern California where the climate is considerably dryer, it has since been taken over by other palms, such as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, and other Archontophoenix as well, it is still the dominate pinnate palm, in places like Central Florida, where it thrives on the humidity, and tolerates the occasional 25 degree F. nights. Its fruit is edible to wildlife, often being sought after by birds. It was originally classified in the Coconut or Cocos genus, was moved to Arecastrum, then Syagrus. As a result of this, they often retain a previous name in retail trade. Usually called the "Cocos plumosa palm". (Palmpedia.net)

(Palmpedia.net)

SN/NC: Agapanthus Africanus, Fam. Amarylidaceae

The great majority is purple-blue. This one is a bit intermediate between white, purple and blue. Agapanthus /ˌæɡəˈpænθəs/ is the only genus in the subfamily Agapanthoideae of the flowering plant family Amaryllidaceae. The family is in the monocot order Asparagales. The name is derived from scientific Greek: αγάπη (agape) = love, άνθος (anthos) = flower.

Some species of Agapanthus are commonly known as lily of the Nile (or African lily in the UK), although they are not lilies and all of the species are native to Southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique) though some have become naturalized in scattered places around the world (Australia, Great Britain, Mexico, Ethiopia, Jamaica, etc.) (Wikipedia)

A grande maioria é azul-roxo. (Wikipedia)

Took advantage of the beautiful weather and headed out to the Gorge yesterday to photograph Latourell Falls with my 8x10 camera using enlarger paper as a negative.

The falls were mostly in shade while the trees and foliage in the foreground were in bright sunlight. I metered for the falls which resulted in the foreground being way over-exposed. Total exposure time was 8 seconds at f/22. Fail or Cool?

Technical details: VDS 8x10 camera, Schneider K 240mm convertible lens, Hoya Y2 filter, Ilford MGRC Pearl paper as a negative, Liquidol developer, Epson 4990 scan.

Okay! Here are the results using idye poly on my Sia 'clear blue' tail. I did a dramatic gradient on the fins and then a slow tapered gradient down the tail leaving the very tip of the seahorse tail undyed. You can see how deep blue and less transparent the hip pieces became. I dyed the hip piece for 3 minutes, and each of the following pieces I subtracted 20 seconds. You can't see her belly through the hip piece or the magnets anymore, which was part of the goal. I wanted to keep some areas clear, and deepen the blue so it wasn't as green in appearance. I am completely over the moon with these results. It's amazing how smooth coverage is, how easy it was to do, and how permanent the color is. I want to dye everything now. #idyepoly #fairylinesia #bjdmermaid #bjdseahorse
