Currently the Strange-tailed Tyrant largely is restricted to southern Paraguay, northeastern Argentina, and western Uruguay, where it occupies tall grasslands, but the distribution formerly extended much farther north and east. In view of this range contraction, primarily due to habitat loss, the Red List conservation status of the Strange-tailed Tyrant is rated as Vulnerable.

The Kentish Glory is a striking moth which is usually on the wing from late April to mid-May. This species used to be more widespread occurring in some southern counties, including Kent, Sussex, Berkshire, East Anglia, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Monmouthsire, but is now restricted to the Central and Eastern Highlands of Scotland.
These 12mm larvae hatched on 22.04.2016 and are feeding on Silver Birch leaves. The small larvae congregate together on bare twigs when not feeding. They should grow to about 60mm by late July.

Val d'Isère is a French commune located in the Savoy department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Val-d'Isère is a famous ski resort just 5 kilometers from the Italian border. It is located at the edge of the Vanoise National Park, in the heart of the Alps.
The Bellavarde slope was the setting for four of the five men's downhill alpine skiing events at the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games. In addition, Val-d'Isère was the venue for the 2009 Alpine Ski World Championships, also hosting regular for alpine skiing World Cup events.
Val-d'Isère is located in one of the most popular ski areas in Europe. Together with its neighboring town of Tignes, it forms part of the so-called Killy Space, named after the French skier Jean-Claude Killy, and calls itself "The most beautiful ski area in the world". Apart from the beauty of the place, the area is one of the largest ski areas in the world.
Skiing in Val-d'Isère dates back to the 1930s, when a lift was built on the slopes of Mont Solaise. This lift was followed by the installation of a cable car.
The Pissaillas Glacier also makes skiing possible in summer, although in recent times the summer season has been restricted due to the shrinking of the glacier as a result of rising temperatures caused by climate change. The ski slopes are equipped with snow cannons and a large number of chair lifts, in addition to the funicular that connects the La Daille area with the top of Bellavarde. The station also has two slopes to practice freeride, extreme skiing along really steep routes.
A large part of the skiers who make use of the resort come from the eastern parts of France, as well as from other countries such as Italy, Switzerland or Germany, due to its popularity and proximity to the French border. The economy of the town clearly depends on the activity of the station, with a high role of the tertiary sector.

Dartford Warbler - Sylvia Undata
Juvenile
The Dartford warbler (Sylvia undata) iDs a typical warbler from the warmer parts of western Europe and northwestern Africa. It is a small warbler with a long thin tail and a thin pointed bill. The adult male has grey-brown upperparts and is dull reddish-brown below except for the centre of the belly which has a dirty white patch. It has light speckles on the throat and a red eye-ring. The sexes are similar but the adult female is usually less grey above and paler below.
Its breeding range lies west of a line from southern England to the heel of Italy (southern Apulia). The Dartford warbler is usually resident all year in its breeding range, but there is some limited migration.
The Dartford warbler was first described by the Welsh naturalist Thomas Pennant from two specimens that were shot in April 1773 on Bexley Heath near Dartford in Kent.
The species is naturally rare. The largest European populations of Sylvia undata are in the Iberian peninsula, others in much of France, in Italy and southern England and south Wales. In Africa it can be found only in small areas in the north, wintering in northern Morocco and northern Algeria.
In southern England the birds breed on heathlands, sometimes near the coast, and nest in either common gorse (Ulex europaeus) or common heather (Calluna
Dartford warblers are named for Dartford Heath in north west Kent, where the population became extinct in the early twentieth century. They almost died out in the United Kingdom in the severe winter of 1962/1963 when the national population dropped to just ten pairs. Sylvia undata is also sensitive to drought affecting breeding success or producing heath fires, as occurred during 1975 and 1976 in England when virtually all juveniles failed to survive their first year.
However, this species can recover well in good quality habitat with favourable temperatures and rainfall, thanks to repeated nesting and a high survival rate for the young. Indeed, they recovered in some areas of the UK, but numbers are once again on the decline in other regions of their natural range.
The range of the Dartford warbler is restricted to western and southern Europe. The total population in 2012 was estimated at 1.1–2.5 million breeding pairs. The largest numbers occur in Spain where there were believed to be 983,000–1,750,000 pairs. For reasons that probably include loss of suitable habitat, the Spanish population appears to be declining. The species is therefore classed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being Near threatened.
A period of climatic warming since 1963 has seen the UK population increase to "more than 2,500 pairs in 2006 (Wotton et al. 2009). Expansion into patches of structurally suitable habitat (up to an altitude of 400m), more northerly areas and away from the core of the range, from Dorset and Hampshire to Derbyshire and Suffolk, is likely to have been facilitated by milder winter weather (Wotton et al. 2009, Bradbury et al. 2011)... The Dartford warbler population in the UK is expected to continue to increase. However, future climate-based projections for the European range indicate that by 2080, more than 60% of the current European range may no longer be suitable (Huntley et al 2007). There is evidence that this is happening already, with severe declines in Spain and France (Green 2017). For this reason, the species is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Global Red List. If the declines in southern Europe continue, the UK will become increasingly important for global conservation of this species".

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 metres (6,900–7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination and is situated 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Nuwara Eliya and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Ohiya.
The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala the plains are known as Maha Eliya Plains. Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The plains' vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest, and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals, and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest dieback is one of the major threats to the park and some studies suggest that it is caused by a natural phenomenon.
The sheer precipice of World's End and Baker's Falls are among the tourist attractions of the park.
It's a 10 Km walk.

Frequents suburban settings across North America, along with open woods, brushy field edges, and deserts. Males vary in shades and intensity of red. Some males are yellow or orange. Females are drab gray-brown overall with plain faces and blurry streaks on underparts. Similar to Purple and Cassin's Finch, but House Finch males are more orangey-red with color equally bright on crown, throat, and breast. Red color is mostly restricted to head and upper chest, contrasting with cold gray-brown nape, back, and wings. Pale sides show distinct brown streaks, lacking red tones. Females lack bold face pattern and have more diffuse patterning overall. Often sings loudly in neighborhoods and visits feeders. (eBird)

She was part of a flock of House Finch that were visiting nearby feeders. Although the males are flashier, I thought that she looks happy in the winter sunshine. The males just looked grumpy.

A small, green, long-tailed parakeet endemic to New Zealand. Note the distinct lemon-yellow crown and the thin orange band extending from the base of the beak to each red eye. Juveniles are a duller color and their orange band and crown may be absent. A critically endangered bird now restricted to three beech forest valleys in inland Canterbury and several offshore island sanctuaries. Usually very quiet and challenging to see. Listen for its loud, brief chatter call to give away its location. When pairs are together, softer contact calls can be heard. Forms small flocks in autumn and winter. Smaller size and lack of crimson frontal band and rump patches distinguish Malherbe’s from Yellow-crowned Parakeet. Juvenile Yellow-crowned Parakeet can confuse identification, and calls of the two species can be challenging to differentiate. (eBird)

One of the goals of the Marlborough Sound trip was to visit Blumine Island in search of this critically endangered parakeet. Not an easy process, as disembarking the boat involved climbing down a ten foot step ladder leaning against the bow of the boat then wading through the surf onto the beach. Still, as you can see, we did find the bird (in this case two), sitting deep in the forest. I've rather inexpertly removed two OOF twigs from in front of the bird, to better show how beautiful it is.

This uniquely plumaged bird breeds on the coasts of Peru and Chile, and is restricted to the Humboldt Current. It is an erratic, rare visitor to the southwest coast of Ecuador. Atlantic Royal Flycatcher - male - Vulnerable - Royal Flycatcher is very widespread, with a distribution that extends from southern Mexico south to the Atlantic Forest region of southeastern Brazil. Throughout this broad area, Royal Flycatcher inhabits the lower levels of humid evergreen or deciduous forests, although it also ranges into mature second growth, and edges. Royal Flycatcher exhibits notable geographic variation across this range, and so some authors recognize as many as four species of royal flycatcher: a northern species that occurs from Mexico to northern Colombia and northern Venezuela; a Pacific species (occidentalis) that is restricted to southwestern Ecuador and adjacent Peru; an Amazonian species, which is widespread in northern and central South America east of the Andes; and an Atlantic species (swainsoni), that occurs only in southeastern Brazil. Two of these populations, occidentalis and swainsoni, are potentially at risk of extinction. All of these taxa are flycatchers with a long bill and tail; the plumage is mostly brown, with a rufous or ochraceous tail. The most notable feature of Royal Flycatcher is the long ornate crest, which is red to orange (paler in females), with black and blue spotting. This crest usually is recumbent, giving the flycatcher a distinctive "hammerhead" appearance. When fully erect, however, the crest also is flared laterally; although it is rare to see the crest erected in a free flying Royal Flycatcher, these birds are well known for fanning the crest when held in the hand, while rhythmicaly swaying the head from side to side. The nest of Royal Flycatcher is a very long, sack like structure suspended from a slender branch or vine, and frequently is placed over a stream (or a small clearing) in the forest. Birds of The World.
The Atlantic Royal Flycatcher raises its fan very rarely. It took me more than 3 hours observing this individual to get this photo. I can say it was my Christmas gift.
Wishing a very Merry Christmas full of love, peace and joy!

This genus of about 138 species occurs in India, the Himalayas, SE Asia and the Pacific Islands out to the Solomon Islands, lacks psuedobulbs, has fan shaped growths giving rise to a stiff and sometimes hairy inflorescence which can have 1 or many flowers opening either together or in stages. The genus has two distinct growing types evidenced in their leaves, those that are mottled or solid with more than one flower grow warmer, and the solid green with only one flower grow intermediate to cool. The flower parts of Paphiopedilum are distinctly different than others with it's pouch like lip in the center of the flowers and on to the bizarre hairs, warts and bumps of the linear petals and up to the cowl-like upper or dorsal sepal. My collection was purchased from our local Niagara Region orchids “Clouds Orchids” wholesaler in Jordan, Ontario, Canada.

Kongobatha diademata. This mantis species is restricted to the East Coast of Australia, Is difficult to find due to its small size (little more than 2.5cm/1 in for an adult) and pale green coloration that closely matches the leaf color of many Eucalyptus and Angophora species where it locates.
I found it last night during a big storm, clinging to the flyscreen in my kitchen. I removed it gently and brought it to the potted Chrysanthemum that I keep on a table under the veranda. This morning, I started deadheading the plant and my little rescued Mantis came out. What I like most about this species is the pattern on its wings but you must find the right orientation to light to reveal it. /

Trinity Presbyterian Church, Nelson NZ
The first Presbyterian church in Nelson, Trinity church, was opened in December 1849 under the guidance of Rev. T D Nicholson. The Presbytery of Nelson / Marlborough included the following churches and smaller parishes, these being Trinity Church, Knox Church, St Luke's Union Parish, Motueka-Riwaka Parish, St. David's Church, Tasman Church, Moutere Hills Church, Upper Moutere Church, Moutere Hills Cooperating Parish and also included records from Motueka Methodist Church and Nelson South Methodist Church.
An historic Nelson church has been taken off the market after an 1849 deed was found to restrict the use of the land.
The Presbyterian Trinity Church on Nile Street, which is more than 150 years old, was put up for sale in June. Dwindling congregation numbers and the steep cost of maintaining the large wooden building saw the last service held there two years ago.
The church and the land is owned by the parish and held on its behalf by Church Property Trustees, which looks after Presbyterian Church assets.
Alpine Presbytery moderator Reverend David Coster said Trinity Church had been withdrawn from the market on July 12 after advice from the trustees that an 1849 deed restricted the land to church use only.

A Balearic Islands endemic. Formerly found throughout the islands. However, as a result of the introduction of alien species since Roman times Lilford's wall lizard is now restricted to small islands off Mallorca and Menorca and to the Cabrera Archipelago, and is thus classified as an endangered species. On Cabrera I found them to be numerous in low stone walls and very varied in colour and size. There were many melanistic individuals, nearly black, but usually with the same beautiful turquoise underside that you see here. I took many pictures; it was difficult to select the best. Hope you are watching, Lacerta bilineata !
