Glossary

  

Canola is a trade name for the refined oil but is sometimes used to refer to the whole plant.

 

Oilseed rape is a very useful crop as the seed is typically 42% oil and the meal left after removing the oil is about 42% crude protein. Furthermore the oil is particularly high quality and high in monounsaturates and should logically be a premium product (as it is as "Canola", the trade mark of rape oil produced in parts of North America).

 

The meal is a useful animal feed.

 

There are two quality types

Edible oils, used as a food grade oil.

It is most often encountered as an odourless frying oil low in unsaturated fats but it is also an ingredient in many food products, especially where a "healthy" oil is required.

Industrial (although some edible types are also used industrially), which are NOT edible but have been bred to contain high levels of compounds critical for some industrial processes.

Even the raw oil, with some adjustment, will run diesel engines (it can be run on its own but apparently doesn't do the engine much good.)

One of the contributors to UBA has, for the last couple of years used it in the oil tank of his chainsaw. This is a total loss system, on a busy day about 2litres gets thrown off the chain between two operatives. He buys it direct from the local supermarket. (This is not recommended for a saw not in regular use as if left it gums up the system and after a while the saw acquires a green tinge.

The plant

Rape seed is a tiny round black seed and is sown at 3 to 8 kg/Ha (ie at under 1gm/sq m) which germinates rapidly to produce a typical brassica (cabbage family) plant. After a period of establishment it runs to flower producing the characteristic brassy yellow flowers and a faint odour of honey.

 

Honey

It is responible for much of the honey produced in lowland UK, although the honey is so strong it tends to crystallise and so is often blended. The pollen is designed for pollination by bees and is heavy and sticky (as anyone who walks through a field in flower will discover).

 

Harvesting

The seed pods are about 5mm in diameter, pointed at both ends, and 30 to 80mm long. Harvesting may be preceeded by dessication (spraying to kill the plant evenly) or swathing/windrowing (cutting the plant and leaving it on the stubble to dry) or direct cutting with a combine harvester. Attachments to the front of the combine are common for both picking up the windrow or direct cutting (which often comprises a long extension between the knife and the combine intake). The pods are easily shattered and the seeds lost and the small ballbearing-like seeds will run like water through any tiny holes.

 

Several species of bird, including the Linnet (a farmland bird in decline), are able to take advantage of rape crops for food. Others, including Sedge Warbler and Reed Bunting, regularly use it for nesting. Their breeding attempts often last beyond the desication or cutting point and rsearch has shown that the bird's nests almost always survive the spraying process but most are destroyed by cutting.

Hello, I am your partner for the Let Life Light Swap. When I saw the title I knew exactly what I was going to send for this swap because it was how I interpeted the title. The Let Life brought to mind a lighthouse keepers job and of course the light brought the thought of the lighthouse itself.

 

Can you imagine being a keeper of the light and know that you was responible for the safety of many that traveled by sea, you insured their safety and life. Below are some of the rules the lighthouse keeper had to obide by, taken from the 1881 Instructions to Employees of the Lighthouse Service. Do you think you would have been able to do the job? Would you have liked to have lived this way to keep others safe? The lighthouse keepers job was not easy.

 

The keeper on watch had to remain in the watch room and give continuous attention to the light while he is on duty. When there is no assistant, the keeper must visit the light at least twice during the night between 8 p.m. and sunrise; and on stormy nights the light must be constantly looked after."

 

A keeper was expected to understand how to operate the apparatus and use strict economy in the use of his supplies: "He had to be careful to prevent waste, theft, or misapplication of light-house property." Quantities of oil and other supplies used each day had to be recorded.

 

"Light-keepers could not engage in any traffic on light-house premises, and they must not permit it by any one else. They must not carry on any business or trade elsewhere which will cause them to be often absent from the premises, or to neglect, in any way, their proper duties."

 

Visitors to the light station were to be treated courteously and politely, but not allowed to handle the apparatus or carve their names on the lantern glass or tower windows. Intoxicated persons were to be removed "by the employment of all proper and reasonable means."

 

Keepers were not to change the color of towers or buildings without written orders. All parts of the station, including bed chambers, were to be neatly kept. "Untidiness will be strongly reprehended, and its continuance will subject a keeper to dismissal."

 

Shipwrecks were to be reported promptly to the inspector. "It is the duty of light-keepers to aid wrecked persons as far as lies in their power." Precautions had to be taken against fire; fire-buckets were to be kept filled and ready. Burning mineral oil, or kerosene, was to be extinguished with sand or ashes rather than water.

 

Boats were furnished at stations where they were "necessary for communication with the mainland, to obtain household supplies, etc." They were to be used only for light-house purposes; "the boats must not be used for freighting, wrecking, fishing with seines, ferrying, or for carrying goods or passengers for hire."

 

Paperwork increased for the keepers. They were to submit monthly reports on the condition of the station and make explicit specification for any needed repairs. A monthly report on the fog signal and absences from the station was also required. Expenditures of oil, etc., and salary vouchers were to be submitted quarterly. Property returns were submitted annually and receipts for extra supplies, the keeper's receipt for property on taking charge, receipts for delivery of supplies, shipwreck reports, and reports of any damage to station or apparatus and any unusual occurrence were made as necessary. The keepers were expected to keep a daily-expenditure book, a general-account book, and a journal. This journal, or log, must record the events of the day in one line written across two pages. "The visits of the Inspector or Engineer, or of the lampist or machinist, and an account of any work going on or delivery of stores must be noted; as also any item of interest occurring in the vicinity, such as the state of the weather, or other similar matter. The books must be kept in ink, with neatness, and must always be kept up to date."

 

Special instructions were provided to keepers of stations where navigation was closed down by ice in winter. "Lights may be extinguished when navigation is entirely suspended, but must always be shown if it is at all possible for vessels to benefit by them." Keepers at island stations who could not remain there during the winter "must continue their lights as long as possible in the fall without endangering their lives by being caught in the ice; and must return to their stations as early in the spring as the ice will permit."

 

A section devoted to the "Care of Lights and their Appurtenances" included detailed instructions on the care of the optics. The keepers were to hang lantern curtains each morning and to wear a linen apron to protect the lens "from contact with the wearing apparel." The lens and lantern glass were to be cleaned daily. Rouge was used to polish the lens and "rotten-stone" to shine the brass. "Keepers are forbidden to use any other materials for cleaning and polishing than those supplied by the Light-house Establishment." The revolving clockwork and carriage rollers were to be kept properly oiled. Keepers had to cut replacement glass for the lantern when necessary.

 

Other sections were devoted to care and management of other equipment, particularly the fog signal, and specific instructions were provided for the keepers of light-ships. The last section listed "Allowances of Provisions" for unusually isolated stations, amended in 1883:

With all this said what do you think the lighhouse keepers was paid a year? In 1867, an Act of Congress fixed the average annual salary of a lighthouse keeper at $600. Well under what it should have been for the responsiblities they each had.

 

The lighthouse you see in the photo is The Tybee Island Lighthouse- Despite being the oldest Southern lighthouse and the second oldest in America, the Tybee Island Lighthouse is well preserved. It is one of Georgia’s active lighthouses and has a Fresnel lens, the same one it has used since 1867. On site are 3 keeper’s houses, with the principle keeper’s house being used as a museum at the present time.

This is the fourth lighthouse to be built at Tybee Island. The first one was completed in 1736, made of wood and stood ninety feet tall. It later succumbed to a severe storm. The second was completed in 1742, and made of brick and wood. It too was built much to close to the Atlantic and was threatened.

The third Tybee Island Light was built in 1773 much further from the ocean. In 1857, the light was fitted with a second order Fresnel lens. This tower was used until 1866 when a cast iron lighthouse was authorized to be built.

An interesting fact about this 4th lighthouse is that the lower 60' of the 1773 lighthouse was used as a foundation. The crews added ninety-four more feet and a First Order Fresnel, the light now totaled 154' tall and was re-classified as a major aid to navigation. The light beamed 18 miles out to sea. Because of this re-classification, the lightstation now required three keepers. It was first lit October 1, 1867.

SCREEN legend Shirley MacLaine has unlocked her ex-files, revealing how she took Andrew Peacock UFO-spotting on a date at a remote Mexican volcano while he was foreign minister.

A new headbox for the side feeder which will distribute billet cane to either the No.1 Diffuser Conveyor or the main carrier (to the milling train) through a variable opening sliding door facility. Vic Kuorikoski and Bruce Johnson were responible for these drawings.

also referred to as the phillpot mud pits, this area was, unfortunately, terrorized up until a couple of years ago by some of the less responible off roaders in the area. Despite the toys I run to make the backroads manageable, I'm very careful about where I ride, and drive. Blazing new trails, using off road vehicles through the wetlands, and 'bogging' are all prohibited on crown land, let alone in the various wildlife preserves and if discovered should be reported to the local conservstion officers.

Recoleta Cemetery, established in 1822, has become a popular destination for tourists in Buenos Aires. The above-ground vaults and mausoleums bear the names of quite a few notable individuals and families.

Edmund Hooke was a barrister whose monument was erected by his son Edmund, who also erected the adjacent monument to his aunt. The latter is signed by John Ivory and there can be little doubt that Ivory was also responible for the monument on which this bust appears.
