I finally managed to sneak down the Kukui Trail and found some nice clouds here at Waimea Canyon. Then the sun broke through clouds and cast some cool and interesting light over the landscape. After reviewing this photo, I wished I had taken out the 70-200 to pick the landscape apart piece by piece, but alas, Live and learn. :)

75% of getting a good shot is being there :-) I spend a lot of time scouting and looking for scenes and responding to changes in the light and landscape.

It had rained pretty heavy just hours before, and the water here is paper-thin, just enough for a reflection. No way was I going to pass this spot up.

After several days of shooting with David Swindler, he kindly invited me to join his group out to White Pocket. WP has been at the top of my list for several years, so thanks to David I was able to strike that one off my list. That's Cody Wilson way off in the background, I happened to look up from my composition and noticed he was going to have to remove me from his photo if I didn't high tail it out of his shot. So I fired off a couple so that he would lend a sense of scale to the scene. Had a lot of fun shooting here but if you show up during the day its not nearly as impressive as dusk. All the textures start to pop out and the sandstone glows in the twilight. Had a great time and met some really nice people.

Running as the 973, NS 5642 leads the Operation Awareness and Response safety train east at MP45 on the NS Southern-West District, just west of Bartelso, IL.

Thanks to WR for the early-morning heads up on this move, which dominated my morning planning. Crap clouds all around but at least it wasn't a slate-gray featureless sky. Friendly crew too.

If you asked a commoner passing on the street if they would venture to Hopedale Ohio, back down a gravel road, through some weeds, and into the pitch black at 4:13AM the likely answer would be a "hell no". Quite frankly the commoner could not comprehend the pure and good old-fashioned stupidity/boredom that would lead someone into this scenario. A 5 hour drive to Pittsburgh junction, filled with Sheetz french fries and plenty of BSing. Upon arrival we left the light of the truck and ventured to the tracks. We were investigating the abandoned signals when a distant sound echoed through the night. "It has to be a truck, no way the timing was this perfect." The sound stayed constant, then the sound revealed itself to be a bunch of EMD 645s, and then the noise lead to squeals and a light around the curve. Wheeling and Lake Erie train 218 has made its grand entrance to Pittsburgh Junction. Pitt Junction is a former controlled interlocking containing abandoned signals. While a switch is still here, the related infrastructure is abandoned. From an audio standpoint, it could be any time of the day as 218 dialed up on the radio. The high pitched Wheeling and Lake Erie dispatcher tone responded as the two parties sorted business. 218 got their railroad, set their switch, and took the front half of their train down the Valley Subdivision to work Timiron. The end of their train remained on the mainline as they pulled their Valley Sub cut down off the main. The foggy morning air reflected the headlights against the signals here. The train pulled through the interlocking and disappeared into the morning darkness. It would be 2 more hours until the train would shove back out, grab their train, and move just 3 miles east to swap crews with westbound train 213 in "downtown" Hopedale.

Mobile phones take over our lives more and more. It is difficult to find people to photograph who are not engrossed in the mobile phones.

I do not subscribe to such - I just take photographs using my mobile phone

Of course Sethi looks great from every angle but at the moment this is really is best side as on the other side he still has his eye infection. The symptoms of his cold have subsided in the meantime but the eye infection hasn't really responded to the treatment and we had to change to another eye ointment. Tomorrow he'll see the vet again ...

This is just the colour version of my previously uploaded image, The secret.

I find this colour version less "mysterious", less "mystical", less "fabulous", even less "jaw-dropping" (I am quoting adjectives from a sample of the comments to the bw version), but... Well, as I said to my Flickr friend Willow 2014 responding to her comment, I have not been able to resist the temptation of these green tones from the new buds. So here I am with the colour version, so less-everything-than the-bw-one, but I hope someone could enjoy it for what it is: a quiet symphony of pale & misty greens.

I would like to know your impressions about this colour version, so comments will be especially welcome!
