Monitoring the brine shrimp population of the Great Salt Lake is the responsibility of The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. This team is returning from a sampling run.

Multiple commercial operators on the Great Salt Lake harvest brine shrimp October - January. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has safeguards to prevent overharvesting.

The land behind the boat is an exposed reef. This reef should be underwater, but due to the low levels of the lake, the reef is exposed.

A view of the house Ulysses S. Grant lived in when he was elected in 1868 as the 18th President of the United States. Constructed in 1859-60, the house was designed by William Dennison in Italianate style for Galena resident Alexander J. Jackson. When General Grant returned to the city in 1865 as a Civil War hero, he was presented the house—purchased by a group of prominent local Republicans, led by Elihu Benjamin Washburn whose mansion was featured here earlier.

Grant used the home as his official political and voting address, living there with his family during the 1868 presidential campaign, then for a few brief periods during his presidency (1869-1877) and retirement. He visited for the last time in 1880.

The house has been maintained as a memorial to President Grant since 1904, and is today managed by the Historic Preservation Division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Grant Home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. It is a contributing property in the Galena Historic District which encompasses 85 percent of the City of Galena and includes more than 800 properties. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, with modifications in 2013.

Galena is the seat of Jo Daviess County in the northwest corner of Illinois. This is the unglaciated area of northwestern Illinois. The rolling hills, history and abundant 19th century architecture draws visitors from throughout the country. The estimated population of Galena in 2019 was 3,158.

She can nest any time of year, in the most inhospitable climates, even during the frigid cold of winter. The factor that regulates nesting time is the availability of food rather than the time of year. When food is abundant, white-winged crossbills will use these resources to raise their young. They are amazingly well adapted little birds with an abundance of energy. The seeds of Tamarack seem to be one of their favorites. #WhitewingedCrossbills #BirdsoftheArtic

This was the fourth National Park I went to on my trip. My next upload will show one of the arches in the park for which it is famous.

Arches National Park is a US National Park in eastern Utah. The park is adjacent to the Colorado River, 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab, Utah. It is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.

The park consists of 76,679 acres (119.811 sq mi; 31,031 ha; 310.31 km2) of high desert located in the Colorado Plateau. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches are known to have collapsed since 1977. The park receives on average 10 inches (250 mm) of rain a year.

Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally named a National Monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated as a National Park on November 12, 1971.

This fence definitely was a use of the available resources, and very little cash was expended in its construction. I actually see this quite often, but usually not next to a main road....HFF everyone!

We're here visiting The Planets

I checked on my sales thread at tib today - and it was locked! Welcome in the new era: tib launched it's new "buy.sell.contribute" site to take over from the old sales forums.

Part of me wants to stamp my feet and toss my hair: the old sales forums were free. But the tib community has grown so amazingly, it must cost Gina et al a bomb to run. So more power to them, and if it helps underwrite the tib forum, I'm for it. ^^

It's at www.tib-x.com. Looks like there's a bit of teething, but I like it already. Check it out. :D

Even with so few resources, they were able to build the Giza pyramids perfectly aligned with the Orion Belt. In addition, they are totally north-facing, with a very low margin of error.

The Sphinx that guards the pyramids of Giza does not have the nose. An ancient legend said that Napoleon and his soldiers had destroyed him. But more recent studies have shown that even before Napoleon the Sphinx no longer had a nose. And the mystery remains!

***

The pyramid trio of Giza (or Giza) was erected at the behest of the Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure pharaohs, respectively, father, son and grandson. The three pyramids are arranged in order of size and age.

The largest, oldest and most famous of all is the Pyramid of Khufu, also known as the Great Pyramid. Originally 146 m (9 m more than presently, since it lacks part of the top and the lining) and 230 m of base, it is formed by more than 2 million blocks of stone weighing about 2.5 tons each and some arrive to weigh even more than double that (!!!!). The construction of the pyramid is surrounded by mysteries and impresses.

Next is the Pyramid of Khafre, son of Cheops. The pyramid is 143 m high and 210 m high, and although it is a little smaller than the first one, it appears to be larger since it is 10 m higher. It is the only one that kept the limestone cladding with which the pyramids were covered and which was mined in the Middle Ages for the construction of the medieval city of Cairo. Such a shame! Imagine how beautiful they should be, covered in white limestone gleaming in the sun?

It is as big as the Khufu pyramid, but not as famous as it is, so harassment is minor! Oh, and not to mention that she has, as guardian, no one else less than the Great Sphinx, which with the lion-shaped body and human head, is the image of Pharaoh Khafren himself. Although many have been disappointed by the size of the Sphinx it is, yes, huge! It is 20 m high and 57 m long. Of course, if we compare with the size of the pyramids and even of other statues like those of Abu Simbel or those of the Temples of Luxor, the sphinx is really small. But nothing that takes away its luster or diminishes its beauty.

The pyramid of Miquerinos - son of Khephren and grandson of Khufu - is the smallest of the three, it is "only" 66 m high and 108 m high. Next to the pyramid of Miquerinos, there are 3 smaller pyramids that belong to the 3 wives of the Pharaoh. The same can be seen in the other pyramids as well, but here they are better preserved and more visible.

I think most people imagine that the pyramids are "lost" in the middle of the desert and that it is difficult to reach them, right? None of this! They are practically in the middle of the city. They stay in Giza (or Giza) in the Cairo metropolitan area. Unfortunately, it is possible to see the city from almost anywhere in the Giza complex, which spoils the magic of the place a bit ... but just turn your back and you will not see anything but sand and pyramids!

On June 27, 2011, the Micronutrient Initiative and Teck Resources announced a new partnership, the Zinc Alliance for Child Health (ZACH), which will support countries to scale-up zinc supplementation programs for the treatment of diarrhoea. Endorsed by the Government of Canada, ZACH’s first project will be in Senegal, where some zinc programming has been piloted and is poised for scale-up. These photos from Joal, Mbodiène & Fadiouth in Senegal were taken during one of the pilot projects.

The Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, United States was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The site was designed by the American architect, Henry Hobson Richardson, in concert with the famed landscape team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the late 1800s, incorporating a system of enlightened treatment for people with mental illness developed by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride. Over the years, as mental health treatment changed and resources were diverted, the buildings and grounds began a slow deterioration. In 2006, the Richardson Center Corporation was formed with a mandate to save the buildings and bring the Complex back to life through a State appropriation for this architectural treasure.

Today, the Richardson Olmsted Complex is being transformed into a cultural amenity for the city, beginning with Hotel Henry Urban Resort and Conference Center and the Buffalo Architecture Center in the iconic Towers Building and two flanking buildings (about one third of the Complex). The remaining buildings have been stabilized pending future opportunities.

(10/365) Resources - You don't always have travel for miles on end, or wake up at the crack of dawn to 'get that shot'.

Instead make best use of the resources that you have.

Planetary Resources Mining Drone Carrier "STREIFF" is another one of the "war horses" of the Planetary Resources (PR) mining flotilla.

After the war was over PR quickly bought a large number of unused war ships. The bankrupt governments of the newly formed Confederacy where eager to sell. This way PR could quickly start to mine the newly opened asteroid fields and establish themselves as one of the most powerful mining companies of the galaxy.

Streiff is a command ship that has been stripped down and rebuilt into at drone carrier. New additions are upgraded drone link arrays, rock analysis sensors and several different repair modules. Streiff can carry 30 medium mining drones in it's hold but can operate and control up to 200 drones simultaneously. Ore can be loaded inside it but the ship also has docking ports and connections for all kinds of transport ships and containers.

------------------------------------------------

Streiff took just about the entire month to build. I am a house owner and a father of two, so my building time is sparse. I had an entirely different kind of ship planned at first, but just a few days before September 1 I realized it would be too big and that I probably wouldn't be able to finish it.

So here it is! It's about 110 studs long. I have no idea about the amount of bricks used. Lot's of hinges though :)

The Harry T. Vaughn Public Library in Clewiston, Florida, has served as a community hub for over 80 years, evolving from a small volunteer-led collection into a modern facility.

Early History and Founding

Establishment (1941): The library’s origins date back to 1941 when Clewiston’s mayor requested the local Garden Club to organize a public library.

Initial Setup: To get started, the club enlisted a librarian from Moore Haven High School to catalog their initial book collection.

Move to Permanent Site (1967): After over two decades of operation, the library moved to its current permanent location in 1967.

Modern Expansion and Development

Renovation Planning (1992): Due to high usage, the Clewiston City Commission began planning a significant expansion in the early 1990s.

Funding and Construction (1993–1994):

Construction was funded by a mix of sources, including $400,000 in state and federal grants and a $100,000 donation from the U.S. Sugar Corporation.

Groundbreaking took place on June 1, 1993, and the newly expanded facility held its grand opening on May 16, 1994.

Regional Integration (2004): The library became a founding member of the Hendry County Library Cooperative in 2004, an agreement between the county and the cities of Clewiston and LaBelle.

Current Services

The Harry T. Vaughn Public Library today offers diverse resources beyond traditional books, including:

Digital Access: Eight public computer stations, wireless printing, and the Libby e-book platform.

Community Programs: Various educational and social programs for all age groups.

Media Collection: Access to DVDs, audiobooks, and popular periodicals.
