Malta celebrates its independence on the same day as the international day of peace. ️ A great reason to share this Big Picture of Malta and wish everybody in the world peace. ✌️

NASA image release November 16, 2011

The science team that oversees the imaging system on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has released the highest resolution near-global topographic map of the moon ever created.

This new topographic map, from Arizona State University in Tempe, shows the surface shape and features over nearly the entire moon with a pixel scale close to 100 meters (328 feet). A single measure of elevation (one pixel) is about the size of two football fields placed side-by-side.

One of Webb’s most complex instrument modes is with the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS). The MRS is an integral-field spectrograph, which provides spectral and spatial information simultaneously for the entire field of view. The spectrograph provides three-dimensional ‘data cubes’ in which every pixel in an image contains a unique spectrum. Such spectrographs are extremely powerful tools to study the composition and kinematics of astronomical objects, as they combine the benefits of both traditional imaging and spectroscopy.

“The MRS is designed to have a spectral resolving power (observed wavelength divided by the smallest detectable wavelength difference) of about 3,000. That is high enough to resolve key atomic and molecular features in a variety of environments. At the highest redshifts, the MRS will be able to study hydrogen emission from the first galaxies. At lower redshifts, it will probe molecular hydrocarbon features in dusty nearby galaxies and detect the bright spectral fingerprints of elements such as oxygen, argon, and neon that can tell us about the properties of ionized gas in the interstellar medium. Closer to home, the MRS will produce maps of spectral features due to water ice and simple organic molecules in giant planets in our own solar system and in planet-forming disks around other stars.

“In order to cover the wide 5 to 28 micron wavelength range as efficiently as possible, the MRS integral field units are broken up into twelve individual wavelength bands, each of which must be calibrated individually. Over the past few weeks, the MIRI team (a large international group of astronomers from the USA and Europe) has been focusing primarily on calibrating the imaging components of the MRS. They want to ensure that all twelve bands are spatially well aligned with each other and with the MIRI Imager, so that it can be used to place targets accurately into the smaller MRS field of view. We show some early test results from this alignment process, illustrating the image quality achieved in each of the twelve bands using observations of the bright K giant star HD 37122 (located in the southern sky near the Large Magellanic Cloud).

“Once the spatial alignment and image quality of the several bands are well characterized, the MIRI team will prioritize calibrating the spectroscopic response of the instrument. This step will include determining the wavelength solution and spectral resolution throughout each of the twelve fields of view using observations of compact emission-line objects and diffuse planetary nebulae ejected by dying stars. We show the exceptional spectral resolving power of the MRS with a small segment of a spectrum obtained from recent engineering observations of the active galactic nucleus at the core of Seyfert galaxy NGC 6552. Once these basic instrument characteristics are established, it will be possible to calibrate MRS so that it is ready to support the wealth of Cycle 1 science programs due to start in a few short weeks.”

This image: This portion of the MIRI MRS wavelength range shows engineering calibration data obtained of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 6552 (red line) in the constellation Draco. The strong emission feature is due to molecular hydrogen, with an additional weaker feature nearby. The blue line shows a lower spectral resolution Spitzer IRS spectrum of a similar galaxy for comparison. IMAGE INFORMATION

- Panoramic view is centered looking north-north-east.

- The Test started on the Friday and apparently draw "a small crowd" - unsurprising since few people had time off from full time jobs in those days!

- However, the next day, Saturday, when this great panorama was taken, the crowd is reported as being "huge" & "massive", but I can't find any official number. I believe the papers! Would you care to do ahead count? ;o)

- This Test match was the first in the English cricket team's tour to Australia in 1903-04, & thanks to R.E. Foster's extraordinary innings, the M.C.C. would go on to win it by 5 wickets & thus the 5 match series 1-0 (all the other games were drawn). www.espncricinfo.com/series/17656/scorecard/62473/Austral...

- The time on the main clock tower is 10.14 AM & the scoreboard shows ENGLAND (M.C.C.) batting in the first innings, following Australia's First Innings score of 285 (all out).

- The facing batsman is E.G. "Ted" ARNOLD on a score of 6. He went on to score 27. www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/8565.html

- The Australian bowler is F.J. LAVER. He went on to take 1/119 off 37 overs. www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/6402.html

- The non-facing English batsman is test debutant R.E. "Tip" FOSTER, also on a score of 6. He went on to score an incredible 287 runs, out of England's 1st Innings total of 577 (all out). This amazing record of the highest ever test innings score by a new Test player at the time would last 111 years until beaten recently by Ross Taylor in Perth (290 runs). www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/12881.html

- I think it is amazing that the photographer managed to record THIS PARTICULAR MATCH - where an historic record (that would stand for the next 111 years) was about to be made by a debutant test batsman!

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

I trust that everyone has had a wonderful week of holidays and the ringing in of the new. Yes, 2012 is now behind us and we have 365 days of 2013 ahead of us.

I didn't go out last night, though I did think quite a bit about it. Truth be told, while I totally embrace the whole "new years" thing, with it's share of resolutions and new beginnings, etc, I really have issues with crowded places. I tend to prefer my New Year's to be one of self-reflection in the privacy of my own space ... where I can think about my year end thoughts and ways to improve myself - personally, professionally, and listen to my own heart and spirit. Yes, 2012 was a crazy one for me, but also one filled with some of the most fondest memories for me. For that, I'm immensely grateful.

This holiday season, I chose to retreat a bit from flickr and other photo sharing sites, to simply re-group ... re-energize, if you will. Thanks so much for hanging in with me. I'm sure, at some point in time or another, most of you know what I mean by this hiatus.

Today, I have chosen this image from last October's trip to New Mexico and the Annual Balloon Fiesta 2012 in Albuquerque. Wow, what an amazing place and event to attend. With over 600 hot air balloonists participating, the place was hopping. We attended 2 days of the week long festival - even though I was bitten by the flu bug at the onset. Just couldn't pass on the opportunity to partake in the events - the EARLY DAY events. :-).

It was like being a kid in a candy store, as one by one - or should I say several by several balloon ascended into the picture-perfect skies over Albuquerque. The air was crisp, but the place was abuzz with activity and excitement. Especially fun was having my daughter Kelli along for the ride with us, as we tagged this event on to a family reunion week in WY and MT.

So, as the dawn of 2013 rises onto the horizon for us - just like these balloons - I wish for everyone a wealth of promises fulfilled, health, amazing opportunities, and the love of your family and friends, in the year ahead of us. Keep in mind that life is what we make of it - you get what you invest, so fill your cup of life and live it to the fullest. I know that we try to. :-)

Part of my New Year goals, I will be returning to regular posts on flickr, etc. More images from 2012 travels ahead and lots from 2013, as the opportunities unfold.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Read more books.

Instead of browsing through newspaper and magazine articles on the smartphone and the tablet, which kind of make me depressive.

Read a proper book. Like I used to do. And I start with my photography hobby books. Reading a biography of www.vivianmaier.com/ by Ann Marks.

A real eye opener.

Week 2: resolutions.

The early morning sun catches 50018 "Resolution" as it enters Totnes with ECS from Laira for the 0640 Totnes to Exeter on 11th May 1988.

This is what proved to be my last major foray for 50s involving sleeping on the Up and Down sleepers (which were by then 47s). The previous night involved doing 47620 on the Up midnight to Taunton for 47628 on the Down back to Plymouth - oh joy!

The 0600 Plymouth to Paddington HST was then taken and the ECS and loco for the Totnes service could be viewed on Laira. If it was a 50....it was off the train at Totnes. Resolution was duly observed as we past the depot and stuck with the diagram and worked the 0811 Exeter to Waterloo and was taken to Yeovil for 50008 back to Exeter.

Shunting sticks, shackles and oil tail lamps form part of the station scenery.

This loco was one of my favourites and one of the ones I had over a 1,000 miles behind before it was refurbished in late 1982. Sadly it wasn't one of the machines to make it into preservation and was withdrawn in July 1991 and scrapped 12 months later at Springburn.

DP2M really did me in for sharpness. But it isn't practical for shooting in general (it works great only at ISO100). So now I am more conscious about shooting with my X-Pro1 trying to get the best resolution and sharpness. I've been shooting this Sky at Home set strictly at ISO 100-400 fearing noise at low light. Today I am experiementing with ISO 800 for the first time. It's nice not having to hold my breath while squeezing the shutter release button in order to prevent camera shake. But is the higher noise level worth it? Can't wait to experiment with this more.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion. We have digitally enhanced some of his artworks.
