Is it art? Or, is it an attack from Mars?
So what is this? It's a large sculpture that was in the middle of a huge music festival called Coachella in the desert in Indio, CA. The artist is Michael Christian and he calls it... I.T.
This photo was used in Resident Advisor magazine, in an article about music festivals.

What advice would you give to incoming freshman?
"Don’t get too hung up on having massive ideas. Freshman year is a lot about absorbing techniques and later on you can formulate your ideas. Just be open to everything. If I had the mindset that I had to follow the process I had come up with exclusively, I wouldn’t have learned as much as I wanted to."

What advice would you give to first year students at MCAD?
"Be able to let go of things—you’re going to be spending the next four years reinventing your ideas and constantly trying to figure out yourself and your work. You don’t have to have all the answers right now. Really wait for stuff to come. The less aggressive you are, the more you can experience."

This strange structure was made out of a sort of light gossamer-like material, with inflated balloons either hanging or floating above it. It made a fantastic subject to photograph, especially in the early evening with the lights on it and the fisheye lens.

"Remixing the Past" (2015)
Marilli was the first full-length album that I self-released as a 33 1/3 rpm vinyl LP. It dates back to the very first time I began to experiment in a studio.
I was like a kid entering a toy shop, totally excited and, of course, I got hooked forever. Anyway, Marilli consists of quite simplistic and somewhat hilarious recordings. It was recorded on 8-track tape in three studios across Amsterdam: Hero Wouters, WHG and SPN.
The sounds include balafon, kalimba, a Korg MS-20, voices, bird calls, tape, keyboards, percussion, and a Mexican turtle flute, plus contributions from musician friends on bass, cello, drums, steelpan and guitar.
There was no sampler used, but I "borrowed" some voices from other records.
Marilli was reissued by Seance Centre in 2017:

These are remixes made in 2015.
Much thanks to the participants for their creative reworks.
I also like to thank all the wonderful musicians who contributed to the original album, and whose sounds are now re-emerging here in a totally new way:
Lesley Joseph - steelpan
Piet Lichtveld - guitar
Cecil Wespel - bass
Willem Melker - drums & guitar
Paul Newsum (R.I.P.) - guitar & percussion
Niek Stafleu - cello
Martijn Veldhoen - percussion
Atti Bauw - guitar

Reviews / quotes:
AMBIENTBLOG:
I still clearly remember hearing an unknown artist performing on a sunday afternoon radio program in 1984 (‘Spleen, VPRO). I learned that Michel Banabila had self-released his debut album called Marilli – which I immediately bought from the only record shop in Amsterdam that stocked it. That was the beginning of a long and adventurous fan-relationship: I have been following Banabila’s music for over 30 years now! The music he currently creates is very different from what he created back then: Banabila considers his debut as a ‘quite simplistic and somewhat hilarious recording […] Quite embarrassing, really […] The overall effect is extremely naive, the sounds were nice and organic, but my “composing” process was not’. While this may be true from the viewpoint of the artist that has grown and looks back on his early work, the original album still has the same feeling for me… it presented new sounds, a new freedom, a new ‘world fusion’ music (remember: this was relatively short after the release of Eno/Byrne‘s ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’). (Marilli also marked the start of a new collective called Chi which did some remarkable multimedia ‘fourth world ambient’ performances.)
“You can’t change the past”, Banabila concludes and he decided that there will be no re-release of the original Marilli.
But things took a different turn when 2015 saw renewed interest in the debut album. Former Chi-members Hanyo van Oosterom and Koos Derwort made a remix of the first album track and that became was the launch of a new project named Marilli Remixed: 23 remixes of the original analog recording by artists from all over the world (including Michel Banabila himself).
‘I asked them (the remixers) to skip the voices in their remixes, and to only use sounds from the record itself. (They) Came up with these really amazing works to transform the album into a more minimalist 2015 version. It has become a remarkable collection, especially for those that still can remember the original album, of course. But that’s not necessary – those that dón’t know the original will find pleasure in the 2015 remixes too. No matter Banabila himself may think of his original work, it clearly was worth remixing: the respect for the original material is felt in all details. (Peter van Cooten)
GONZO CIRCUS 132:
(RvP)

Between the Berlin grey and grey you’ll sometimes find some fresh colors. A red bike, a girl with an unique style, in front of a wooden door. She opens it and shows you her home, her life, her studio.
Britta Arnold is a child of Berlin.
When you hear creeping high hats, hypnotic beats and a pop of acid, chances are you‘re hearing Britta Arnold from the console of her musical spaceship. Straightforward and distinctively poised, her unique blend of beats makes for a milkshake of cosmic potency. For this elegant fire red, her pledge to break norms and find the hottest music on the block has gained her quite the following and opened up a fantastic world of people, places and special moments. Since co-founding the Bar25 label in 2006, her nights are spent playing gigs anywhere between Asia, America and Europe, while many of her days are spent in the studio where she dreams up new music. She has released on Katermukke and Heinz, remixed tracks by ‘It boys’ Satori and Stavroz, and been remixed by the likes of Claude VonStroke and Ruede Hagelstein. Aside from this, her new musical project ‘Britta Unders’ with Amsterdam based Unders, is adding even more magic to her minutes. They are playing sets from sundown to sunrise together all over the world but also started a new label Happy Camper, this will be launched November 2017 with artists as Mira, Be Svendsen, dOP and Noraj Cue. When not doing these things, she’s probably planning her GRRR Mit BRRR party — a celebrated event at the Berlin club, Kater Blau.
A born and bred Berliner who never had to learn how to be one, Britta reflects the city in which she still calls home: a little edgy, a little down to earth and always filled with artistic ambition. Having once lived in a caravan with her cat ‘katuscha’ on the grounds of the Bar25, she takes this Happy Camper vibe with her into every space she enters, whether the club, the festival, the studio or a walk through her home town. With the support from her global electronic family pushing her in the right direction and a naughty box of tunes on her back, the future of this lady from outer space only goes from strength to strength. So get your space suit on and go intergalactic roaming with your best friends and lovers. Do it to the hypnotic and wired sound of Britta Arnold.
