A case of severely defeated expectancy... :)

In the aftermath of the Third Great War, the International Reclamation Mission was created by the new Global Federation to help clean up battlefields of psionic anomalies and rampant genetically engineered fungi and flora deployed by the warring nations.

Pressurised trucks, nicknamed "snails", provided a mobile base of operations and shelter against spore storms for Reclamation agents in the field. This was particularly vital due to the rudimentary nature of the agents' protective gear, which often left the face unprotected.

Most Reclamation Agents were soldiers of the last Great War. The poor conditions drove many to banditry or an early death. Much of the resentment was passed onto their children and grandchildren. The anger of these people rammed into dilapidated space stations and seemingly abandoned by the terrestrial elite, caused the First Space War to become almost inevitable.

Please forgive me if my return comments on your images are short for a few days... I fractured my right hand in a number of places a few years back playing sports. Every now and then arthritis acts up and it makes it painful to type. Please know i love your work :)

A candid unposed shot, taken on another day to the other shot I took of this lady. All the gold colours were not set up: it was luck on my part who happened to be passing.

I understand this lady busker to be Romanian. I was told by another street person, who I will introduce later along with his photo - who was speaking generally, not of this particular person - that the rich foreign tourist pickings bring many of the wrong sort to Bath who do not have the street code of honour, so to speak, and it was (in his words) a "ruthless world for the roofless". Much worse, he said than Bristol or London, where he had also been living on the streets.

I am not suggesting this lady is the wrong sort. I don't know her and have never spoken to her as she doesn't strike me as the type to freely talk to me when I have no money on me, but I was told separately by someone else that she does not stick to assigned busker pitches or times so there was some resentment there.

How true any of these allegations are, I don't know. Perhaps it is each man (or woman) to fend for himself out there, I don't know. I am just passing on what I have been told.

I've been to India so many times in my life but never seem to get the opportunity to take photos there - which is a ridiculous shame as anyone who knows India knows it is a photographer's dream.

I was in Bangalore recently for work and decided to take the Leica M9-P along with me. I was standing on the street with some colleagues/friends, when this old chap came walking by. I asked one of my friends to check if it would be alright for me to take a portrait shot (I don't speak the local lingo), and thankfully this old gentleman agreed. I didn't have much more than 20 seconds with him but it was enough.

The streets of India are teeming with colourful people living colourful lives, though in many cases it is an existence that most of the rest of us woul find very hard. This old gentleman clearly lives a hard life - he was asking for charity - but there doesn't seem to be any resentment in the look he gave me.

Do not resent those who have wronged you. Do not be ruled by your anger. They are not worthy of your heart’s madness. Forgive those who have caused you grief, not for them, but for yourself. Forgiveness brings freedom to a prisoner who you will soon discover to be yourself. Be strong and forgive because forgiveness is not for the weak of heart. More importantly, forgive yourself. Give pardon to your soul for its mistakes and incapacities. Forgive yourself from failing to learn from them. What’s done is done and you can never run away from them. Learn to face them. Your blunders will make you stronger. Seek for forgiveness not only from others but from yourself. For your heart to feel right again you must free it from all kinds of resentment and the only way towards that is forgiveness.

She dances through my mind to this day, the broken mind of a ballerina who chose to dance with the devils chorus and rejected her father's love and advice, she dances to this day along the road to hatred and resentment, god bless Tim.

That phrase was very much a part of the fabric of Allentown, Pennsylvania, home of the world headquarters of Mack Trucks. Although I grew up about twenty miles from Allentown, I was well aware of the pride in being the home of the industry leader. After the acquisition of Mack by Renault, reorganizations and cost-cutting measures caused the pride to turn to resentment, I once saw a cartoon of a poodle doing unspeakable things to a bulldog, pretty much summing up how long-time employees viewed the new management. Although the main assembly plant is still in the Lehigh Valley, I was taken back when I saw a building with a sign proclaiming it to be Mack Trucks’ World Headquarters along Interstate 40 in Greensboro, North Carolina, about an hour from my current residence. Here in better days, a load of cabs from another plant arrives in Allentown.

It's not been a vintage Autumn so far in terms of ideal conditions. With nothing but rain forecast for the whole weekend I treated myself to a lay in on Saturday morning. I arose at a leisurely half 8, looked out the window (force of habit) and couldn't believe my eyes. A thick fog, a 'pea-souper'! I rushed into the shower and out the door, feeling bitter resentment for the forecasters at BBC Weather! Getting increasingly frustrated with them, so often they forecast mist when there never is any, and on at least a couple of occasions now they've made no mention of the M or the F word, and I've woken up to a beautiful misty morning.

Thankfully, yesterday it was the kind of fog that lingers, and I was able to spend an hour or two in this local beech woodland, and managed to come away with a few nice ones.

THE FIGHT OF TWO WOLVES WITHIN YOU

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life: “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. ”It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil–he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you–and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

The departure of President Zuma from office was a result of many factors: evidence that, under his leadership, the ANC was heading towards defeat in the 2019 General Elections; pressure from financial markets played a role too, as did growing popular resentment of corruption. But his departure was also linked to a fierce battle to protect the Constitution and democracy, of which South Africans are justly proud. Central to this battle was the independent judiciary, civil society actors (most notably perhaps the Helen Suzman Foundation) and outstanding lawyers and judges. One of the most important law firms that acted in defence of the Constitution and democracy was the firm Webber-Wentzel, a firm with a long and noble history and reputation. Like many other major firms, it too has moved to Sandton. I took this detail picture of their impressive building on s shoot with Jan van Heerden.

As the lock falls away from my lips,

My tongue sheds it's acid,

Becoming coated in honey.

The pressure releases and I grow strong,

Knowing that refusing to accept less than my due

Will make me the person I am meant to be.

Kind and Honest.

Resentments floating off as fast as it takes for me to voice them.

My voice comes,

quiet at first, then more confident with use.

My feet flatten from the ballerina stance I have forced myself to walk in.

Chains break,

Leaving my hands untied

No more.

I am worthy.

That's the only reason needed to spread my steel wings.

“God our Father, we find it difficult to come to you, because our knowledge of you is imperfect. In our ignorance we have imagined you to be our enemy; we have wrongly thought that you take pleasure in punishing our sins; and we have foolishly conceived you to be a tyrant over human life. But since Jesus came among us, he has shown that you are loving, that you are on our side against all that stunts life, and that our resentment against you was groundless. So we come to you, asking you to forgive our past ignorance, and wanting to know more and more of you and your forgiving love, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Prayer of Saint Augustine)

Holi is considered as one of the most revered and celebrated festivals of India and it is celebrated in almost every part of the country. It is also sometimes called as the “festival of love” as on this day people get to unite together forgetting all resentments and all types of bad feeling towards each other. The great Indian festival lasts for a day and a night, which starts in the evening of Purnima or the Full Moon Day in the month of Falgun. It is celebrated with the name Holika Dahan or Choti Holi on first evening of the festival and the following day is called Holi. In different parts of the country it is known with different names.

The vibrancy of colors is something that brings in a lot of positivity in our lives and Holi being the festival of colours is actually a day worth rejoicing. Holi is a famous Hindu festival that is celebrated in every part of India with utmost joy and enthusiasm. The ritual starts by lighting up the bonfire one day before the day of Holi and this process symbolizes the triumph of good over the bad. On the day of Holi people play with colours with their friends and families and in evening they show love and respect to their close ones with Abeer.

Happiness, it must be remembered is a small light at the darkest self. Small pilot faithful, patient and unalterable, but it is good to revive ceaselessly day after day, it is good to take shelter from the wind, protect from storms or rain grief despairs. A little light it is for everyone to preserve the ill, negative thoughts, resentment poisons, inattention habits. Why is it so hard to be happy? [Jacques Salome]

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

A Clean Slate: How to Forgive Someone Who Has Hurt You

by Charles R. Swindoll

Walking closely with the Lord means we must come to terms with forgiving others. Yes, must. We can’t avoid or deny the fact that relationships often bring hurt and the need to forgive. Whether we have been wronged by another or the responsibility is ours, Ephesians 4:31-32 beautifully summarizes how we can have a clear conscience and be free to love and serve God with all our heart:

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

In different stages in our life, we may be confronted with the difficult task of forgiveness. The following chart and steps help us get started toward a choice of obedience and godly love.

Cultivate a Heart of Forgiveness

Deepen your understanding of God’s forgiveness through Bible study and meditation. God has been astoundingly, absurdly generous to us. Let that grace prompt humility and gratitude. See Romans 5:8.

Learn to recognize the signs of a forgiving heart: letting go of the need for punishment, looking at the offender with pity and compassion, and choosing to reach out in love.

Learn to respond well when old feelings come back. Rely upon the Shepherd’s help to change your heart. Turn (repent), tune in to the Shepherd’s voice (depend), and travel His path for us (obey).

Steps to Forgiveness

First, realize that forgiveness is risky. Even a repentant offender is likely to fail again, perhaps in the same area.

Second, rely on God. Cry out, “Lord, I lean on You for the grace and strength to love this one who has hurt me and to work for what is best for him.”

Third, actually cancel the debt. Through prayer, express to God that you relinquish the right to collect debt on any level and to release your bitterness.

Fourth, evaluate whether you should tell the offender what you have done before God.

Fifth, if appropriate, verbally offer them forgiveness. If they repent, your relationship can resume. If not, the relationship cannot be resumed; but with forgiveness offered, good can be returned for evil (Romans 12:21).

What If Forgiveness Can’t Be Had?

If you want to make things right with someone you’ve hurt, but they are unavailable, allow God’s forgiveness to suffice. Trust Him to intervene on your behalf to ease any heartache you have caused. It may help to confess your sin to a trusted friend.

If the person is available but refuses to forgive you, ask yourself, Does their refusal indicate that I haven't genuinely repented? Test yourself by the standards found in 2 Corinthians 7:8-11. If genuine, then God’s forgiveness is sufficient. Realize, too, that forgiveness can be a process. They may need time to be willing to forgive.

May the following prayer help you get started on the journey of forgiveness today.

Dear Forgiving Father,

Thank you for your greatest gift, Your Son Christ Jesus, who came that we might be forgiven. Thank You so much for Your mercy.

Give us the courage to show that mercy and the humility to ask for it. When we have offended, make us quick to acknowledge our wrong and do whatever is necessary to be reconciled. And with those who have hurt us, may we release all resentment and grudges. Enable us to forget all that holds us back from a grace-filled life.

Finally, may we find our greatest joy in granting others what they don't deserve . . . and thereby modeling Your mercy that has set us free. Amen." written by Chuck Swindoll

Can I?

I’ve shot from this very bridge many times, but on this day, everything worked. Although I added special Lightroom treatment to it, I really love how this street just goes on and on until it fades completely.

Over the last weeks I realized that I am kinda rethinking my old landscape photographs and am working them into the new street stuff.

How? I’ve lost my resentments against dramatic light and the use of all available lenses, including the wide angle. And that’s the one I was using in the beginning all the time. You know, single trees and stuff.

And I also like to adjust the photos in Lightroom a little more than half a year ago. Working with dodge & burn, split toning and gradients. The challenge is, of course to not overdo it.

She waits for action that has been promised. Her bitterness is that which is left from her past. Resentment is all she possesses. Punishment is what she calls revenge.

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson

about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, "My son, the battle is between

two "wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil.

It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed,

arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies,

false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good.

It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute

and then asked his grandfather:

"Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied,

Simon de Vos (Antwerp, October 20, 1603 - Antwerp, October 15, 1676) The Chastisement of Cupid (circa 1532) - oil on oak 56 x 84.1 cm.

In the richly decorated Renaissance room, a nobly dressed gentleman chastises the boy Cupid, bent over in shame, before the eyes of Venus. She tries to help her son, but is prevented by a helmeted warrior who may be Mars. The frightened ladies throw their musical instruments to the ground. A group of cupids flee in fear towards the exit. An old woman mischievously shows the spectator an empty wallet and with this gesture explains the resentment of the knight who punishes the god of love.

Seen on a wall in Chile near one of Pablo Neruda's houses, resentment still runs high over the installment of Pinochet as President and the subsequent slaughter of large numbers of civilians, an estimated 3000 mainly executed by government soldiers. There is strong evidence that as many as 400000 were horrifically tortured

Let me begin by saying that this is not a religious tract. Although this is about a Christian holiday, this is also not about Christianity per se. It’s a spiritual meditation on my recent journey to Taxco, Mexico.

This Easter I traveled to the colonial town of Taxco, Mexico to relax and document the Semana Santa or Holy Week procession festivities. One can witness the processions as they wind through ancient cobblestone streets. The occasion is devotional and festive. Children are dressed as angels, followed by the regular folks, Penitentes and more faithful shouldering beautifully carved religious statues.

While in Cacalotenango, during a Good Friday dramatization put on by local indigenous peoples, I overheard the artistic director of the re-enactment say to the participant/actors: "Don't 'materialize' the art that you are participating in......let yourself become a medium for spirit." As an artist, the director's injunction made me stop and think..............

That these indigenous people could celebrate in this manner many hundreds of years after their civilization and culture were torn asunder by greedy and muderous prostylizers got me thinking.

As I walked the streets of Cacoletenango and Taxco and then working on these images, the word that kept coming to mind was.....”forgiveness.” Forgivenes is a fundamentally human choice that chooses peace beyond the emotional drama of what "justice" may look like. It's beyond logic, beyond keeping scores..... What for some might be a difficult existential undertaking..... Especially for people like myself who are keenly atuned to human rights...

According to Wikipedia, of all things, forgiveness is the mental, emotional and/or spiritual process of ceasing to feel resentment, indignation or anger against another person for a perceived offence, difference or mistake, or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution[1].

This definition, however, is subject to much philosophical critique. Forgiveness may be considered simply in terms of the person who forgives, in terms of the person forgiven and/or in terms of the relationship between the forgiver and the person forgiven. In some contexts, it may be granted without any expectation of compensation, and without any response on the part of the offender (for example, one may forgive a person who is dead). In practical terms, it may be necessary for the offender to offer some form of acknowledgement, apology, and/or restitution, or even just ask for forgiveness, in order for the wronged person to believe they are able to forgive.[1]

Most world religions include teachings on the nature of forgiveness, and many of these teachings provide an underlying basis for many varying modern day traditions and practices of forgiveness. However, throughout the ages, philosophers have studied forgiveness apart from religion. In addition, as in other areas of human inquiry, science is beginning to question religious concepts of forgiveness.

Psychology, sociology and medicine are among the scientific disciplines researching foregiveness or aspects of foregiveness. Instances of teachings on forgiveness such as the parable of the Prodigal Son[2] and Mahatma Gandhi's forgiveness of his assassin as he lay dying, are well known instances of such teachings and practices of forgiveness. Some religious doctrines or philosophies place greater emphasis on the need for humans to find some sort of divine forgiveness for their own shortcomings, others place greater emphasis on the need for humans to practice forgiveness between one another, yet others make little or no distinction between human and/or divine forgiveness.

what is left on our mind are only the fond memories....

someday it will come..

LA&L 423 trundles by the former DL&W depot in Avoca, NY on the Bath and Hammondsport line. The conductor, seen riding on the steps, will step off to protect the crossing beside me before continuing south to Inergy Midstream near Savona.

This short line, in terms of motive power and scenery, is great, and so are the train crews. However, to this day, I have resentment towards this line in general. After following these guys to Inergy, and waiting for it at a crossing well south of where they were working, a group of 4 MoW guys came up in a company truck. One of them got out of the truck to where I was standing near the crossing, and proceeding to verbally harass me to the point of blocking my car, and nearly calling the police, without cause. It wasn't worth the trouble, so I left, but the sour mood stuck with me throughout the day, sadly. Not all railroads are like this, but it still sucks when it happens.

Entry for the #DBChristmasNightmare.

2121: Tin Man

It’s the season, and Gray hated it.

Fake snow in a world where real snow no longer existed. Endless displays of Santas and Rudolphs in all sizes and materials, some of which all too lifelike, others deliberately cartoonish and tacky in a nod to tradition. Endless rows of plastic Christmas trees, presumed to look like the real thing from the tales of grandparents. In 2121, Mariah Carey’s Christmas albums were finally given an overdue rest – only because life-sized robo-Mariahs could now sing to you in the comfort of your living room.

In other words, a lot had changed, but it had all somehow managed to stay the same, like humanity was prisoner to its self-made myths and idols.

Not that Gray occupied himself with thoughts on humanity’s likes and dislikes on this merry-merry season. No. There was the hell that was Christmas Eve and the festivities around it. Namely, the table he shared with five other people.

“Hey, Tin Man!” Charlie called from across the table. “Can you make that thing glow green and red?”

Not this – not again. Charlie’s alcohol-ruddy face grinned at him obnoxiously from across the table as though he’d just dropped the bastard child of a brilliant idea and a funny joke.

Gray resisted the urge to react – let alone overreact. “It’s not a toy,” he responded with as much patience as he could muster, a hand passing over his chest almost protectively. The rest of the explanation he’d been repeating to his brother-in-law for the past few years at the tip of his tongue, dying to burst out, preferably accompanied by as many expletives and creatively profane combinations as he could muster.

“Drop it, Charlie” Gray’s sister – in more advanced stages of inebriation than her partner – chimed in. And for a second, Gray felt relieved. A second too soon, evidently, because next up the inappropriately-named Grace spilled half the contents of her glass onto her hideously festive sweater without noticing as she declared that “He’s no fun. No heart, no fun. Get it?”

Get what? It wasn’t even a joke – it didn’t even make sense. But she was busy snort-giggling into the remnants of her drink, joined by Charlie. Who…found that intelligible, but not the concept of dropping it, apparently.

“Come on, Tin Man. Be a good sport, bet you can program it to do some Christmas lights!” Charlie went on, much to Gray’s rising irritation. “Can it sing Jingle Bells?”

“I told you, it’s not a fucking toy. So just drop it.”

Apparently, the profanity is where the rest of the family got uncomfortable and put their feet – or forks, as it were –down, with three other people glancing pointedly at him. But otherwise, harassment was perfectly acceptable. Of course. That's the line in the sand - or the LED light in the damned asphalt.

Having had enough, Gray rose from the table and headed towards the cubicle that passed for a kitchen these days, a hand still passing over his chest – up and down his sternum, feeling the soft humming of the contraption that kept him alive and functioned as a heart. Conspicuous? Yes. Even in this day and age, people didn’t know how to look away and mind their own business and how to not ask stupid questions – or how to not make stupid comments. But Gray was grateful for it. It could glow neon all it wanted. That contraption was his heart, and it kept him alive.

But the jokes. Those were a different story.

At first, they were funny. References to old stories – Tin Man, Iron Man, whatever. They were funny and he laughed, finding the humor in a bad situation. Repetition though was the bane of his existence – the jokes stopped being funny, and indifference was only ever a brief phase before it turned to frustration, then resentment, then irritation, and now…he suspected it was turning to rage.

Fine. This was supposed to be a festive family gathering – one he didn’t want to ruin by allowing rage to get the best of him.

Charlie though. Bless his actual beating fucking heart, but he couldn’t take a hint sober, and he was far from sober. He barged in, following Gray into the kitchen “Come on, don’t be like that. We’re just trying to have fun!” The words came with a more pronounced slur, accompanied by wide, heavy-limbed gestures, Charlie stepping close enough to where Gray could smell the alcohol on his breath.

“Get out of my way, Charlie,” Gray didn’t reply to the comments, instead tried to leave the kitchen, only for Charlie to shift his weight to continue blocking him.

“You’re spoiling Christmas” Charlie declared with the enthusiasm only someone drunk could muster. And logically, Gray knew Charlie was drunk and about as capable of sound thinking as the roasted meat that sat in his rotund belly. “You do this all the time; we can’t say a damned thing to you without you getting all…all…you get all butthurt and shit!”

Who even fucking says butthurt anymore?

Whatever. He was done.

“Get out of my fucking way, Charlie…” Gray repeated, shifting on his feet to try to get around Charlie again, only to be blocked again.

“No! I’m done with your shit, Mr. High and Mighty! You do this all the time!” Charlie’s voice rose, the man moving further into Gray’s personal space to where the whiff became a stench. And to where Gray’s irritation was more solidly morphing to rage. But Charlie wasn’t giving up or giving way – he moved, continuing to block Gray’s way. “You do this all the time. Wah-wah, look at me, I got a…a…a fake fucking heart, don’t talk to me,” Charlie went on.

“Get out of my fucking way right now, Charlie!” Gray interjected but didn’t even get to say more – Charlie didn’t even stop his mocking tirade. He simply carried on, not listening, his voice going louder “Wah-wah, I lost my sense of humor on the operation table, wah-wah, I’m a fucking robot and it gives me the right to sit and sulk and ruin everybody’s time, wah-wah! Maybe this year you should wish for a heart and a sense of humor for Christmas!”

Strange thing, rage. Like the world comes crashing down, and there’s no time for thought and no room for anything other than action. Like there’s no choice but to let it all out, because the alternative was choking on it. There’s nothing else, and nobody else – just Charlie, reduced to flashes. His sickeningly ruddy face, his mocking expression, his obnoxious words, his breaths, warm and heavy with alcohol blowing straight into Gray’s face. The way his body blocked any path forward, and killed any chance that this could end any other way…

Flashes that were joined by the tactile memories of grasping the handle of a heavy knife. Of the physical force he used to drive it into the man before him so he could stop the bellowing mockery. Of the satisfaction of how it went through his flesh.

Over, and over, and over…

Gray wouldn’t remember the screaming. Not his own, and not anybody else’s.

He definitely wouldn’t remember his own bellowed words.

“I fucking told you to shut up! Shut up! Shut the fuck up! That’s what I want for Christmas. There, how does it feel now Charlie? How does it feel now? Now you don’t have a heart either! You find this funny? How about now? How about now, Charlie? Is this funny? You got your wish? Merry fucking Christmas, I got my wish! Merry Christmas!”

A lot has changed, but indeed, a lot remained the same by 2121.

This is one of the original Braum's that happens to be along Rt 66 in Tulsa-- Braum's is a dairy store based out of Tuttle, OK. They serve a radius that can almost be measured with a compass centered on Tuttle and stretched to a couple hundred miles or so--which concentrates them in Oklahoma, but does include western Arkansas, northern-most Texas and lower Kansas. Its a sure way to know you're almost in OK. They have expanded their stores to house a fast food restaurant and a small "market" housing beef & dairy products, some produce and even their home brand of soda. I shop with them pretty often for meat, milk and ice cream, but harbor a bit of resentment for them ushering out Dairy Queen almost completely from the state (variety is the spice of life).

They will only serve their current radius because their quality expectations prevent them from shipping product any further than their trucks can reach in a few hours--so everything is fresh in the stores. The newer signage has neon in it also!

There are a lot of these old buildings around Oklahoma (I've located many in Tulsa). When Braum's began marketing fast food (and ultimately a drive-thru) these small lots with no backlot were unusable. Only a few of these style were renovated and retrofitted with a drive-thru (there's actually one on Admiral along its part of 66). Most were sold off and new larger Braum's were built. I lived in Lawton across the street from one of the few remaining operating non-drive-thru Braum's like this for years, and after I moved to tulsa last year, it closed up too.
