I took this photo of a cool grasshopper chillin in the grass along a sunflower field in Raleigh. He was AWESOME. Love how it turned out!
A secret sunflower field in Raleigh, North Carolina along the Neuse River Greenway. Not a lot of people know about it. I love that! This was definitely one of my favorite moments of this summer so far! :)
Believe it or not, this pic of Duke’s pastoral East Campus has #nofilter to get that depth of field. Like many folks in the triangle, I originally came here to attend one of the many universities in the area. The fortunes amassed from tobacco by the Dukes funded the fellowships that allowed me to get my PhD in history–I’m not super proud of that, but it’s always important to remember who and what makes possible the stuff we do in the present–whether that past is good or bad. 👻📗📘📙📕 @bottlefingers #durm #durham #durhamnc #nc #northcarolina #raleigh #chapelhill #rdu #researchtriangle #researchtrianglepark #duke #history #tobacco / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BItKsCTBLrN/
Hi all! I’m Mar (@bottlefingers) and I’ll be taking over the baton today and showing you some of my favorite spots and scenes from the triangle–mostly Durham. I’ll start with my absolute favorite landmark: the old brontosaurus across the street from the Durham Museum of Life and Science. It’s been standing since 1964. Since this is Durham, it is of course an artisanal dinosaur ;) – it was built by hand by a guy named Richard Wescott who came to the US from Britain as a “war bride” after WWII. He headed the Museum of Life and Science for many years. (You can imagine the culture shock he likely had to deal with going from London to Durham back in the 1950s. Some of us transplants to the area can probably relate! But I’m guessing none of us built a life size brontosaurus as our coping mechanism.) @bottlefingers #durm #durham #durhamnc #nc #northcarolina #raleigh #chapelhill #rdu #researchtriangle #researchtrianglepark #dinosaur #brontosaurus / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BIswAoiBOwz/
One of my favorite examples of Durham’s architectural diversity is the modernist Emanuel Evans House in the Trinity Park neighborhood. It was built by Durham’s first Jewish mayor, Emanuel Evans, who got elected in 1951 by forming coalitions with black business leaders and voters. Evans served a record six terms. Before he was mayor he ran a chain of department stores, and his store was the only business in Durham with a desegregated lunch counter–where both black people and white people could eat together. When a judge ordered him to partition the lunch counter to separate black and white customers, Evans skirted the ruling: he realized it technically only applied to seated lunch counters, so he removed the stools and raised the counter to elbow height to serve people standing up. During his time as mayor he also helped desegregate Durham’s public school system with the aid of his black constituency. @bottlefingers #durm #durham #durhamnc #nc #northcarolina #raleigh #chapelhill #rdu #researchtriangle #researchtrianglepark #emanuelevans #desegregation #jimcrow #modernarchitecture #modern #architecture / on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/BItXsWehHyl/

My friend Pete is a proud new owner of the brand new BMW 1 Series M Coupé. Yes, if you're wondering the car is an incredible piece of machine. We had a good time driving around, jamming some sweet tunes (Conditions, Drake, and Childish Gambino mostly), and taking photos.

RALEIGH, N.C. – A delegation of business leaders from the Botswana Innovation Hub visit North Carolina State government officials here today including North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall. “When people are looking for business opportunities, we are the proverbial matchmaker,” said Marshall about her office’s support for the visit. The delegation is scheduled to tour the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Research Triangle Park, the business model for the hub, and North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus. This is a very special vacuum cleaner used by EPA scientists to sample envrionmental pollutants where people live.
@5by5 and I got to spend the better part of Friday afternoon touring the EPA's RTP campus as part of the 2008 Science Blogging Conference. There were some restrictions on where photography was allowed, so I wasn't able to photograph things like the Rainbow Furnace, the Rotary Kiln Incinerator Simulator or the aerosol testing wind tunnels.
But believe me when I say that they were very, very cool and the only think that would have been better, would have been seeing these labs in actual operation.
Understandably, one wouldn't want a few laboratory noobs running around while the lasers are on, but it's quite a bit easier to see what sort of work goes on rather than just explaining the sort of work that goes on. That said, EPA staff talking about three and a half hours of their day to show eight of us around is greatly appreciated.
We covered quite a bit of material I need to look into further:
The Green Curve: Peter Schubert spent about 45 minutes talking about the EPA's campus and learning how to build sustainably. What's interesting here is that some of the sustainability moves came out of economic concerns. For instance, street lights came out of the plan when the construction plan got tight. But, by working with Duke Energy, the EPA was able to get solar powered street lights on a lease
I asked if the federal government was taking the lessons learned from the campus construction and was told that, yes, the GSA is using the experience and targeting sustainability when building new government facilities.
The EPA, for their part, is targeting LEED Gold certification for future facilities.
Other points Shubert touched on:
- Labs and office space were combined from separate buildings to be in a multi-story building with a floor to roof central atrium, running the axis of each wing. Rather than having several standalone buildings, and requiring building materials, the atrium encloses what would have been two separate buildings, thus reducing the building materials that needed to be mined and processed.
- When the buildings were first built, the EPA staff rescued plants on site that would have otherwise been bulldozed. Some of the plants were brought back to the site after construction and replanted.
- Instead of acres of golf course rough grass with associated irrigation and drinking water requirements, the EPA has wildflower meadow and wild grasses. It gets mowed once a year.
More to come on air quality monitoring and wind tunnels.

I drove all over the new section, I even took I-40 back onto NC 540 and to the Triangle Expressway again.
Here, exit 283 shows I-540 east and NC 540 west; with several TO US routes (with one missing on top right).
