· OPEN MIC ·

After performing at Friendsgiving, I’m feeling more confident about an open mic night. After work, I checked out the Fox and Goose open mic.

This was a hard-working outfit. I wore it for a long day of work and then an evening of research. I’m researching venues to participate in an open mic. While I enjoyed the talent at this event, the sound and viewing space weren’t ideal. I’ll keep looking!

Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman whose cells were removed during a biopsy in 1951 and used for research without her knowledge or approval. Her cells (commonly known as HeLa cells) have revolutionized the field of medicine and have been used for decades in biomedical research - to study cancer, the effects of radiation, and AIDS among other areas. This timeline includes events from 1920 (when Lacks was born) to 2013 (when NIH announced an agreement with the Lacks family to allow biomedical researchers controlled access to the whole genome data of HeLa cells.

A common problem for students studying health and social care related subjects in HE is that they can access the web on any number of devices which do not necessarily have automatic syncing of bookmarked web pages enabled. There is also a related problem of sharing, as well as discovering relevant online resources. A potential solution to these problems is a social bookmarking application such as Yahoo!'s “delicious”. Results from previous studies using this service suggest that social bookmarking shares similar features to more traditional indexing systems but also contains extra dimensions such as tags related to time. We present the initial results from a study into social bookmarking that has encouraged three groups, containing over thirty health and social care students, to utilise delicious in their everyday practice and to create a tagged repository of resources that are relevant to their courses. We will discuss the preparation of introductory materials as well as specific problems faced by health and social care students in using Web 2.0 applications. We will also present the results of analyses into the patterns of tagging and bookmarking activity that have emerged in addition to the types of tags that are being used.

The Roads Campaign Council, an umbrella group that comprised a wide range of parties interested in road transport, was backed by the British Road Federation and seems to have been active in the post-war years as road transport began to grow and investment in roads was seen as being tardy. The 1950s saw the serious development of schemes for major routes such as motorways and ambitious plans for new roads as part of urban redevelopments and these would, of course, be brought to fruition in the 1960s onwards.

The Campaign seem to have issued a series of publciity or propaganda booklets and this is called "Roads Matter - Scotland" and this makes you wonder if other regional booklets in the same format were issued? I have similar booklets issued by them for specific groups of English towns. The twenty page booklet has text and a series of images showing congestion in urban areas, such as Glasgow, Stirling and Dunfermline as well as 'dangerous roads' such as the A74 Anglo-Scottish trunk road and the A77, the route from Glasgow into Ayrshire.

The photos are of good quality and show street and roadscapes now lost along with many contemporary vehicles and period features that prove to make for fascinating research! I've scanned and posted a selection. The book credits a designer - John Denison-Hunt FSIA - and although not dated appears to be 1957.

Another Austin makes its way along the A9 here close to Ballinluig showing the 'county lane' nature of much of the old road through the Highlands at the time. The text discusses many of the old main roads around Glasgow and into Lanarkshire and Ayrshire.

This sketchnote is featured in Eva-Lotta's new book that gathers her sketchnotes from over 100 talks taken at design events and conferences in 2011.

In addition, Eva-Lotta invited 10 of her favourite sketchnoters from all over the world to contribute to the book. They all sketched the same TED talk and created some stunning sketches that show off the wide variety of styles and different ways of summarising content.

I can't say I have plenty of photographs of this species because they like to be elusive and many times, they just have a quick look at who's around and then just go a bit deeper. But, sometimes they like to have a show, like when there are good waves: who can say anything to that, it's like aqua fun! And so, good for me that I took many photos and, in particular, this one that I find really lovely.
