The sea inlet between the Dutch Wadden islands of Ameland and Terschelling called "The Borndiep" is notorious for its very high current velocities at the start of high tide and low tide. As a result, swimming in this dangerous area is strictly prohibited.

A lot of erosion takes place along the coast and this is slowed down by placing breakwaters at right angles to the coastline.

Due to this strong currents, great depths are created in this tidal inlet and the treacherous nature of this is that they can arise suddenly.

Ameland's lifeboat used to be launched in earlier times at this location by launching it from a trailer, because the surf in this place is not as high as on the coast of the North Sea.

The last rescue took place in 1979 when the German sailing yacht "Windspiel" stranded on a sandbank and the horse rescue boat was alerted, so the rescue plan was put into operation.

10 Powerful horses pulled the 13- ton lifeboat and trailer with a thunderous roar to her launch site and from there the trailer and the boat were pulled into the sea inlet by 8 selected horses through the surf.

What no one had noticed, however, was the fact that a very deep stream channel had formed under the water's surface very near the coast.

The boat was launched, but the 10- ton trailer was pulled into the depth along with the 8 horses, so these horses had no change and were dragged along and drowned.

The crew of the life boat had not seen this happen because they focused on locating the sailing yacht in distress.

However, the crew of the sailing yacht were all brought ashore unharmed...

While I was on Snowdon's peak there a helicopter arrived for what I think was a genuine rescue operation, not a rescue exercise.

Here you can see it hovering above the Pyg Track.

We stumbled by chance on a coast guard rescue operation while visiting Las Teresitas.

Helicopter and boats were searching around a specific spot on the coast.

We checked later and found out that tragically two young swimmers got trapped in a small cave and drowned before help arrived.

"Christoph 70" departing back to its homebase Airfield Schöngleina (EDBJ) after another rescue mission in Jena-Winzerla, Thuringia, Germany.

Here you can see the lowering of some people from the helicopter onto the Pyg Track (Snowdon). Afterwards they went to help the injured person.

D21421. 10 of 10. Worm's Head is an off shore island - but only at high tide. However, when the tide goes out there is a rocky causeway connecting it to the mainland, but care is needed when crossing to make sure that there is sufficient time to return before the tide comes in again. People often get stranded over there - and this includes the famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas!

On the occasion of my visit this tide was coming in and Worm's Head was once again an island. There are numerous warning notices about the danger of being cut off by the rising tide but, despite this, two people were over there and had to be rescued by the insure lifeboat – this is it as crew on the the mainland prepare to meet the two stranded walkers.

Search and Rescue (a.k.a. SAR) is a term standardized by the United Nations. It is an "effective worldwide system, so that wherever people sail or fly, an SAR service will be available for when needed". The system is described in the SAR manual issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and international aviation organization ICAO. Member states are obliged to organize SAR services according to these standards.

The Dutch SAR service is coordinated by the Dutch Coast Guard. Over the past 30 years, the 303 Search and Rescue Squadron of the Defence Helicopter Command from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, has carried out many successful SAR operations with helicopters. They used the Agusta Bell 412-Special Performance (Agusta AB412) for this task. The squadron had 3 helicopters, which were stationed at Leeuwarden Air Base and at Vlieland Heliport. On January 1, 2015, the helicopters were withdrawn and the 303sqn ceased it’s operations.

Nowadays NHV (Noordzee Helikopters Vlaanderen) provides this service. They operate out of Den Helder Airport (De Kooy) with two Airbus Helicopters AS365N3 Dauphins. The two helicopters are 24/7 on standby. Beside two helicopters, this also includes two pilots (captain and first officer), a hoist or winch operator, a medic and a diver.

SAR scramble

The helicopter in this photo just returned from a rescue mission or scramble. Notice the ‘somewhat’ disorderly arrangement of medical equipment in the bay and the roll of Leukosilk still hanging in the door opening. In the very early hours of May 29th a 21-year-old crew member of a fishing vessel was thrown overboard into a high North Sea. It took a while before his fellow crew members realized that the victim was no longer on board. Two SAR-helicopters and lifeboats of the KNRM were deployed during the rescue operation. Other ships in the area also received the call to look out for the drowning man. After more than an hour the man was found by the crew of another fishing vessel. He was hypothermic. His core temperature was only just above 32 degrees Celsius. That is very low and in most cases deadly. Medically one can only conclude this fisherman must have had an army of angels on his shoulders for still being alive. The victim was taken to the hospital in Den Helder by helicopter.

The sign with 16 on, it in the back of the helicopter, is used to instruct vessels to switch to the emergency channel 16 on the VHF radio.

Technical stuff

This HDR is consists of 3 individual images. Taken at -2 2/3, -2/3 and +1 1/3. This was due to the high contrasting light conditions. The merge was done with Aurora HDR 2018. Further post-production was done with PS CC. Finally I added the copyright watermarks. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

Every once in a while I come to Alviso, I always find something new. Today I decided to take advantage of a break from the storm and checked out the scenery by the bay. Upon arrival, I heard helicopter noise in close proximity but couldn't pin-pointed exactly where it came from. Then this chopper with a man dangling by a rope below emerged out of nowhere and headed off toward Moffet Field. They left me wondering whether it was a drill for a rescue operation. Perhaps they were trying to save that bird at the lower right hand corner?
