Also called the Hopi rattlesnake, the northern pacific rattlesnake is the most widely distributed venomous reptile in California. One of the nine subspecies of the western rattlesnake, the northern pacific is green, yellowish, grey, brown, or black in coloration with contrasting blotches. A light stripe extends from behind the eye to the corner of the mouth.

They are usually 15-65" in length.

Chameleon in Philadelphia Zoo

Juvenile Western Hognose (Heterodon nasicus) male

Not sure what kind of lizard this is, as I've never seen one with such pretty colors speckled on its back.

Found under a stone and caught by the man with the fastest hands in the east!

Yes this younger male Lace Monitor (goanna) has been seen off from being anywhere near the female by the older male. His body language as he walked off made me laugh - just like he was really not happy ... and sulking into the bargain!

More details about the whole encounter are in the description of this set www.flickr.com/photos/aussiegypsy/sets/72157632909969592/

Protobothrops mucrosquamatus, St. Louis Zoo

Day 73 of Project 365

Why is this called Strikeout? I wanted to capture a snake strike, but I couldn't manage the timing. Oh well, last time I tried this, I ended up with blood running down to my elbow, so this is an improvement.
