Ambalavao (Madagascar) - 98% des malgaches utilisent quotidiennement le charbon de bois. Il est destiné à la cuisine. Comme la majorité de la population est sous le seuil de pauvreté, les familles en achètent de petites quantités, alimentant le feu en l’associant parfois à des morceaux de bois de récupération.
Le charbon de bois est fabriqué dans les campagnes par les paysans. Théoriquement l’abattage des arbres est interdit. Une interdiction toute théorique. Officiellement, ils récoltent du bois mort et le débarrassent de ses impuretés en le faisant brûler dans des bidons en ferraille de récupération qui ont contenu des hydrocarbures ou des lubrifiants chimiques. Tout ça est néfaste pour la santé des malgaches et pour leurs forêts. Ou ce qu’il en reste.
Charcoal market
Ambalavao (Madagascar) - 98% of Madagascans use charcoal daily. It is intended for cooking. Since the majority of the population is below the poverty line, families buy small quantities, feeding the fire by sometimes combining it with pieces of salvaged wood.
Charcoal is made in the countryside by farmers. Theoretically, felling trees is prohibited. An entirely theoretical ban. Officially, they harvest dead wood and rid it of impurities by burning it in recycled scrap metal cans that have contained hydrocarbons or chemical lubricants. All of this is harmful to the health of Malagasy people and their forests. Or what is left of them.

Une gamine, moins de 10 ans.
De loin, lorsque j’étais descendu sur la grève déserte, il m’avait fallu du temps pour comprendre la scène : Une femme, en fait une fillette, perchée sur cette antique chaise, immobile, tendue pour un hypothétique plongeon… sur le sable ! Cela dépassait mon entendement.
La lumière déclinait, le vent était vif et froid.
- Ahhh, désolé mais… vous faites quoi ? Tout va bien ?
- Ça ne se voit pas ? J’attends la marée.
- Mais… c’est dans des heures ! Il fera nuit en plus ! Quel intérêt ?
Elle se relâcha en un instant pour se recroqueviller et me regarder durement.
- Vous me dérangez. J’aimerais pouvoir reprendre mon travail de concentration, merci…
Cette petite morveuse venait de me vexer comme rarement et je pliais bagage sans demander mon reste.

Il est rare que les chiens fixent l'objectif de cette manière ; le plus souvent, ils sont dans l'évitement...
Sauter de la table du vétérinaire (technique de "l'évitement") n'était pas une bonne idée ! 🚑
La petite gelée nocturne donnait au canal, dans les premières lumières du jour, une atmosphère vaporeuse.
Il était tôt. Pas un chat, ou plutôt si, des colverts profitaient de l’instant, tout comme moi ; quel bonheur !
Je connaissais leur manège : débarquant de nulle part, amerrissage en douceur, quelques ronds dans l’eau et hop d’un coup de rein, sur le quai à se lisser les plumes. Quelques minutes plus tard, la tête disparaissait sous l’aile pour un petit somme.
Je les trouvais alors bien vulnérables ; il m’arrivait par jeu, sans bruit, d’en approcher à portée de main : «Gagné ! J’aurais pu t’avoir toi !»
Preuve que les canards du canal cohabitaient en bonne intelligence avec les Parisiens. Nous n’étions plus des prédateurs, apparemment.
Dans le silence matinal deux silhouettes venaient à ma rencontre : Le chien semblait disproportionné ; il était très grand ou sa maîtresse n’avait pas mangé assez de soupe dans sa jeunesse. En se rapprochant, la taille de l’animal, mais aussi son allure m’interrogeaient. Quelque chose m’intriguait sans être capable d’en trouver la raison.
Un colvert endormi sur le bord, faisait barrage et ne semblait pas avoir entendu nos pas.
Je m’écartais pour éviter le volatile assoupi et la femme fit de même quand son chien sans alerte déclencha une attaque, happa le canard, le secoua deux fois pour le lâcher raide mort. Sa maîtresse figée semblait sidérée.
Reprenant mes esprits, je remarquais que le « tueur » était calme, sans le moindre intérêt pour sa victime dont le cou désarticulé, lui donnait un air grotesque.
Et soudain, je réalisais ; je m’entendis crier : « Mais… C’est un loup ! »
- « Chut… Vous allez m’attirer des ennuis ! » Dit-elle, reprenant ses esprits et poussant délicatement du pied, la boule de plumes disloquée, dans l’eau. Un plouf à peine perceptible et la petite forme inerte prit lentement le chemin du port de la Bastille.
Elle acceptait de prendre un café pour nous remettre de ces émotions. Voilà comment je rencontrais Lou….
J’ai posé beaucoup de questions et je crus au début qu’elle se moquait de moi :
- Il s’appelle comment ?
- Je ne lui ai pas donné de nom. Je l’ai trouvé pendant une promenade en forêt de Rambouillet. Une petite boule de poil adorable. Je pensais retrouver ses maîtres. C’est quand il a commencé à grandir que j’ai compris. Alors, je l’appelle juste « mon loup »…
- Moi, c’est Jean et vous ?
- Lou.
- Ah naaan, vous vous moquez, ça fait trop là !
Elle jura ne pas mentir et je la crus. « Lou, mon loup… », J’ai aimé tout de suite. Ça sonnait bien…
Lou était préoccupée.
Elle s’était attachée plus que de raison à « mon loup ». Elle l’avait récupéré le jour où son petit ami lui avait dit que c’était fini. « Il n’a pas dit pourquoi, les hommes sont tellement lâches. »
En tous cas, « mon loup » lui avait permis de supporter la rupture en douceur.
Renseignements pris, détenir un loup demandait des autorisations administratives qu’elle comprit ne jamais obtenir : loger dans un vieil immeuble avec jardin mais 14 m2 mansardé au quatrième… ça ne passerait pas !
Et puis « mon loup » se comportait de temps en temps… comme un loup ! Il était très affectueux, « un nounours », mais des fois, sans prévenir, il tuait, comme ça, et c’était fini, jusqu’à la prochaine. Je venais d’en avoir une démonstration convaincante.
A mon tour, je lui confiais que j’avais dans mon « ancienne vie », possédé des chiens de travail, des setters anglais ; des fous de chasse avec un instinct incroyable qu’il fallait canaliser en douceur ; un peu « mon loup ».
Lou demanda s’il était possible de se revoir. « Bien sûr ! »
Mon loup, avec de la patience et mes connaissances, allait devenir le compagnon idéal…
