New torches are lit, the high winds make them burn fast. On the stroke of midnight on Hogmanay, eight flambeaux or fiery torches begin the procession around the village before being ceremoniously thrown in the River Earn. The origins of the ceremony have long since been lost in time but like many of Scotland's other fire-festivals, it probably has Celtic or pagan origins and was intended to drive out the evil spirits of old year and welcome those of the new.
It is also a nightmare to photograph!!!

A novice bud shares a branch with a flower head from last season on this native blue blossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus). This plant is a favorite of both bees and crab spiders and is filled with action once the flowers open.

The East Branch of the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad crossed the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River by a substantial bridge about seven miles upriver of Lincoln. The bridge has been demolished but this view from the top of one of the original abutments shows a replacement timber footbridge resting on the stone piers of the original bridge. The original rail deck would have been at a higher level, at the height of the abutment on which I stood to take the photo and would probably have been a timber trestle.
This is a Minox C Spy Camera. It was my grandfather's, and I recently inherited it along with many other awesome cameras when my parents moved houses.
While I do have an original iPhone to use, the camera suckkkssss. So I'm going to supplement my daily photos with this guy. Here's hoping that getting it developed isn't too expensive...

There's some more steel that has been installed on the west side tower just above the counterweight. The new span will be longer than the older span which still allows the older span to be opened for boat traffic and not interfere with the new span.
