Fort Reno is a park in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington, DC. It is the highest point in the city, and was involved in the only Civil War battle to take place in the District of Columbia. Fort Reno, at 409 feet, is actually lower than the top of the Washington Monument, which rises 555 feet from nearly sea level. However, the sandstone castle-like fort structure on top and highpoint antenna farm raise the height above that of the monument.

I just looked at Gary's street shot and thought I'd throw this one out there. Really odd town Reno, dying yet vibrant. a place in transition for sure. But, they have STEAK N SHAKE!!!!!!! :-)

Noticed some first responder lights shining outside my apartment window, and I do have a weakness for colored lights out of focus.

It's not as bright as Vegas, but its light travels nearly as far.

Reno, Nevada, USA, after sunset, the casino hotels lit in neon colors, it's impossible to find a "legal" parking spot for this viewpoint, but it was very quiet when I visited (late November 2020) and I didn't stay very long, not sure if it was because of Covid, but there were so many signs against parking and the roadside viewpoint was fenced off for no apparent reason. I hope everyone is having a wonderful week.

Silver Legacy Resort Casino is a hotel and casino located in Reno, Nevada, opened on July 28, 1995. It anchors a network of connected hotel-casinos in the downtown Reno core that included jointly owned properties Eldorado Hotel Casino and Circus Circus Reno. Silver Legacy is a 50/50 partnership between Eldorado Resorts and MGM Resorts International with MGM holding majority stake at 51%. Eldorado Resorts manages the property.

In 1992. Don Carano, a Reno attorney and CEO/Chairman of the Eldorado Hotel Casino and Clyde Turner, CEO of Circus Circus Enterprises, joined together to design the Silver Legacy. At the time, Las Vegas was growing and overtaking Reno with larger and more lavish casino-hotels. Carano wanted to create a similar, competitive casino-resort. Its cost was projected at $230 Million. On July 22, 1993, the special use permit was approved to go ahead with the construction on land owned by Carano, two city blocks which would link the new resort with Eldorado and Circus Circus.

Carano and Turner announced the official name of the resort on December 15, 1994. Following a citywide competition to name Reno's newest resort in more than a decade, the winning name "Silver Legacy" was chosen. In June 1995, the Nevada Gaming Commission approved the gaming permit for the resort.

Carano's eldest son served as CEO of the property and later on, his next eldest son, Glenn, would join the executive team at the resort. Silver Legacy also made the big screen, first in "Kingpin" in 1996 starring Woody Harlson and Bill Murray showcasing the newest attractions of Reno, the Silver Legacy and the nearby National Bowling Stadium, too completed in 1995. Glenn Carano made a short appearance in the film and many scenes were shot inside the resort. Later, in 2002, Waking up in Reno starring Patrick Swayze and Natasha Richardson, was filmed inside Silver Legacy.

Before I knew it it was mid-October and I was itching for a photo trip even a short one. My brother joined me on a run down to Iowa City to see my daughter. Our route tried to make the most of our travels for railroad action and fall color. After picking him up we made our way down the river along CPKC. It was a brilliant morning and we were pleased to catch up to a unit tank train south of La Crescent, MN. We had overtaken the train by Reno but unfortunately it had one of the trademark CP filthy GEs pulling it. A shame since everything else was in place for a nice chase with many sets. Timetable eastbound on the Reno Branch, the local is south of Reno Junction. The intermodal traffic behind GP35s WP 3015 and UP 785 will be spotted for unloading at Parr yard in North Reno. Today all trailer traffic is unloaded at the former SP Sparks yard, now the originating point for the local which services the truncated south end of the former WP branch. Dave Stanley photo ©2025

Fourteenth-floor room at the Sands Regency in Reno. The window was of course inoperable, so I got a table (the golden brown strip at the bottom, which becomes a table when viewed in the fieldofview) as close as I could to the glass. It turns out that I captured a bit of police action (center left of the parking lot). I am glad to report that the occupants of the car were not handcuffed or arrested. But it was a long search and interrogation. Maybe they were the "wrong" ethnicity?

the wells fargo building in Reno can be seen along with the traffic below. I decided to go for a long exposure to get movement in the clouds and the traffic.

Of course there are many thousands of photos with this iconic Reno, Nevada sign. I like how this one turned out though.
