The high technology of satellites reveals the artistic side of natural phenomena: this outstanding shot has been taken by a Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite, capturing the large swirl (thousands of km) formed by the saharan dust coming from Africa and flying over the ocean, then engulfing the Canary Islands. But a closer look will also reveal the green swirls and filaments painted by the algal blooms along the african coasts

Typical marine currents playing in the Adriatic Sea can generate wonderful swirls..often multiple ones at the same time, painting the eastern coasts of Italy, as it has happened in this Sentinel2 image of March 13

A particular atmospheric configuration has caused the presence of this compact long extended cloud that originates in Morocco and goes up to Scandinavia. In this Sentinel3 image it is clearly visible the portion of clouds covering the coast of France, Belgium and Netherlands for more than 1000km on March 17. The cloud movement was also carrying a stream of dust with typical yellow color, visible on the right lower corner

Not unusual but always fascinating, when winds conditions are favorable, the dust from the Sahara desert begins to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. In this case its journey starts in the direction of Canary Island, with multiple streams painting the sky over the islands.Tip : look at the internal waves of dust forming aroung the two closest islands.

A new explosive eruption is occurring at Anak Krakatau Volcano (Indonesia) , since the early morning of Feb.3 and its activity has been captured by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites in the late morning of the same day. It is also its first volcanic episode of 2022.

After the recent snowstorms, Chicago has been widely covered in snow and some ice appeared along its coast in the Lake Michigan. Have a look at this suggestive view of Jan.10 by Sentinel2

The Copernicus Sentinel-2B satellite takes us over Kyoto, shown in the top right, and Osaka, seen in the bottom left of this image. This striking false-colour image captures two of Japan’s larger cities, which are home to 1.5 and 2.7 million people, respectively. Both are, of course, significantly smaller than the capital. Greater Tokyo has a population of around 38 million, making it the largest megacity in the world.

The landscape of the Kyoto Prefecture varies from mountains and bamboo groves to waterfalls and forests. Vegetation is shown in vibrant shades of blue here, with built-up areas represented in yellow-red tones. Longer wavelength bands have been used when processing the image to make it easier to differentiate land cover, penetrate haze, and identify bodies of water.

Whilst almost three-quarters of the country is mountainous, less than 10% is covered by bodies of water. Northeast of Kyoto, we can see Lake Biwa, located in the neighbouring Shiga Prefecture. This is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, covering an area of 672 sq km.

The area is famous for being home to Narezushi, the precursor to modern-day sushi. The dish is thought to have originated in southeast Asia around the second century CE. People began to prepare it in Japan between 8 and 10 CE. Funazushi, using nigorobuna fish, typical of the Lake area, is prepared by fermenting and preserving the fish with rice and salt in barrels for up to a year. The result is a strong-tasting dish, often compared to blue cheese and accompanied by sake.

Visitors from all over the world travel to Kyoto, which is widely regarded as the cultural capital of the country. They are drawn by sites such as the Fushimi Inari Shrine, a UNESCO world heritage site, where more than 10 000 Torii gates stand in dedication to the Shinto god of rice.

The multicultural food scene of Osaka, meanwhile, attracts foodies, on the lookout for tasty street food and an insight into 'kappo dining'. Meaning ‘to cut and to cook’, this less formal cuisine focuses on bringing the diner and the chef together, with diners often given the chance to chat with the person who is preparing their meal.

Over 100 Member governments and 120 participating organizations will gather in Kyoto from 29 October – 2 November for the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Week 2018. The week’s events will focus on the use of Earth observation for the benefit of humankind through GEO’s three priority areas: the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At then end of April, multiple dust storm affected southern Europe. This one in particular engulfed half of the italian peninsula and the large islands leaving heavy sand on every surface. Look at how the dust storm and the visible land has similar size

Full view of Italy obtained as mosaic of Sentinel3 images on 1 January 2022. Fog, the Alpes going through multple countries, and many other details visible.

Nishinoshima Volcano is very active in the last weeks, producing not only some gas emissions from the crater, but also causing water discoloration in the coastal waters that surround the island.

The result is such a mesmerizing image captured by Sentinel2 on January 16

A huge and heavy saharan dust storm came from Africa on March 14 crossing the iberian peninsula and touching France, with Pyrenees that were painted like african sand. This image from Sentinel3 show the 1600km long transport of dust on March 15 while affecting western Europe

The consequences of the latest Etna eruption, the first of 2022, are finally visible in the cloud free view of the whole volcano area as captured by Copernicus Sentinel2 on Feb.18

A weak activity still is ongoing, marked by gas emissions and ash trails on the fresh snow, while the SE crater has changed its structure again. The majestic Bovo Valley stands out on the lower rigth side with its typical colors and shape.

On Feb.10 the Etna Volcano has produced its first paroxysm in 2022, with eruption, ash and a visible lava flow from the SE crater that is clearly visible, together with snow around, in the Sentinel2 image of Feb.11

While eastern USA are hit by a powerful blizzard, Lake Erie is already widely frozen, and its cold beauty is shown in this Sentinel-3 image of Jan 29

Spring 2022 begins in a particular way: abundant snow covers Etna and other mountains of Sicily, so that the volcano is shining in white when seen from space. In the meanwhile marine currents are paintintg with swirls the coastal waters on the southeastern side. This image has been captured by Sentinel-3 on March 24

The discovery of the Durrington greater circle pits was made this week (around June 21st 2020). Each of the 20 or more pits signalled the circumference of a 2km wide circle with the Durrington walls henge in the centre (Woodhenge to a central aside, and a cursus and 'avenue' to its edge, with Stonehenge not so far away. A 2km diameter is verging on geoglyphic in scale, and this addition to an already mesmerising megasite is big news. Each pit is steep sided and around 5m deep and 10m wide and announced at around 4800 ybp to 4100 ybp, so perhaps in keeping with the dates for Durrington walls. The above graphic aims to show that the scale of the pits seems to be outside of a project for stone or wooden erection, and too large and different from burial forms - therefore, it seems that an explanation is in waiting...

For the stone element, I put in a bokeh texture of stone from my archive - no need here for too much realism as the imagination of the viewer is important: and for the heights available with wood - just a little wood texture on a tone. The background isn't Wiltshire - simply a shot from my archive that seemed to evoke a landscape of earthworks and vista.

Phnom Penh, known as the Pearl of Asia, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap Rivers. These two rivers merge to form the Tonlé Bassac River, which flows south away from Phnom Penh and across the border into Vietnam. This complex hydrological system is situated in the Mekong floodplain, which is home to many natural and agricultural habitats. As one of the most productive ecosystems, this region is of great importance for Cambodia’s food provisions.
