This was a self-portrait of Koko and I on the 4th of July. We were at Devil's Punchbowl in California. Our family went to take our remote controlled rock crawlers through the trails. We had a great day!

If you thought I was old but somehow don't look it, then I have picnik to thank for that! (Duh, of course this is edited . . . muahahaha, no one can ever see the real me! = D

This week's assignment for Macro Mondays is "technology". Just last night we have met André Kuipers (our fellow-villager), an astronaut who was in space twice (in 2004 and 2012 in ISS (International Space Station) and who told us so much about space technology. The technical possibilities in our time go beyond our imagination. And as much I would have liked to take pictures of space technology, this is of course not possible. However, what you see in the picture is a remote control with lots of buttons I still do not know the purpose of (for instance "Pure A"). To much technology for me.... HMM!

It was a sad and disappointing day when Henry discovered the Universal Remote Control did not, in fact, control the Universe!

The web is a few feet above White Lake, in Cullinan Park, Sugar Land, TX. I took the shot with a Leica on a monopod extended well off the boardwalk, controlled by an iPhone. Got the monopod yesterday and the idea this morning. First shot I’ve posted with remote control. 132mm focal length is 360mm equivalent,

One of two KCS's SD40Bs, 913, is tied down and wheel chocked at Knoche Yard in Kansas City, MO. It has a couple of notable differences since I photographed it one year prior before this photo. Right side of nose in front of cab is gated or fenced off, and a chair positioned on the front porch where it can be controlled remotely by the operator. Photo taken 05-12-15.

Photo of it taken one year prior: flic.kr/p/nCvpUT

GP38-2 #2520 and RCPHE4 #9120 kick cars on the Old Even in Wyoming yard back on a cold spring day in 2007. The old Chessie drones and their former GE counterparts were fixtures in Grand Rapids for years before CSX started installing RCO equipment onto actual locomotives.

The day today seemed, to me, to be utterly perfect. Low(er) humidity, fabulous skies, lots of sunshine. I kept talking about how gorgeous it was, though lots of people were like "um, really? i'm dying it's so hot." I can't tell if it was just i woke up in a shining mood or if the weather was really nice.

But this picture totally captures how it felt to me today!

Long before the word "Drone" became synonymous with quad-copters, these were the only drones I knew. CSXT #9120 was a former C&O GP40 that CSX had gutted and made into an RCPHE4 (Remote Control Platform Huntington EMD 4 axles) drone. #9120, #9121 and #9122 all retained their Chessie colors after being converted, and were fixtures in yards in Michigan for years. Here we see #9120 working the east end of Wyoming yard with GP38-2 #2520.

The idea behind the drones was that any locomotive could be MU'd with them and be run via remote control. The drone itself also provided additional stopping power in the form of its brakes, but could not provide any extra pulling power due to not having any traction motors. The actual diesel engines were left in them for weight. CSX also had a fleet of former GE Dash 7s of the 4 and 6 axle variety that were also drones. While the concept was good, the added work of basically maintaining an extra locomotive just to house the RC equipment eventually became too much in CSX's eyes, not to mention dragging around the extra dead weight. The drones were all eventually retired and the equipment was fitted to conventional EMD Geeps and SD40s. The EMD drones like #9120 were rebuilt into RDMT Road Slugs and mated with GP38-2 and GP40-2 mothers.

Another year of self-portraits comes to a close. Not a single day missed this year (in fact, in 3 years of SPs, I've only missed 1 day). That's 1096 (1095) days of self-portraits.

I truly love this project, and all the friends I've met and the places I've been able to document. But I think this will be the end of 365 for me. Self-portraits, at least. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

for FGR today.

We spent the last September weekend at Balls 29, a big experimental rocket launch event in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada - the same place where Burning Man takes place. A big rocket is launched every few minutes.

This group carries a rocket glider to the launch area. A rocket glider takes off vertically, powered by a rocket motor, then glides back down slowly under remote control.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

I was shooting an airshow today and this happened. Fortunately the planes are remote control.

The pilots were standing on terra firma when the planes collided, and nobody was hurt.

I decided to take a photo of an igniting matchstick. 35 matchsticks had to "die" until I got this shape of the smoke :D

Yes, the smoke is real, no manipulation was done to it.

A hotel room with one major benefit. It's at the back of the hotel and quiet. This lets you listen to the music in your head:

I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness.

All that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess.

If I were walking in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none.

While you and your friends are worrying bout' me,

I'm having lots of fun.

Countin' flowers on the wall,

That don't bother me at all.

Playing Solitaire till dawn,

With a deck of fifty-one.

Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.

Now, don't tell me I've nothing to do.

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town.

As long as I can dream, it's hard to slow this swinger down.

So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doing fine.

You can always find me here, having quite a time.

Countin' flowers on the wall,

That don't bother me at all.

Playing Solitaire till dawn,

With a deck of fifty-one.

Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.

Now, don't tell me I've nothing to do.

Well, it's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright.

Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light.

And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete.

So I must go back to my room and make my day complete.

We all know Specs's signature shot is in a bookstore, so I had to do my SP with her in The Strand.

I actually bought a book: The Big Oyster, Mark Kurlansky's book about the history of New York through the oyster business. I started it on the subway home and my always-present desire for an oyster is now at a fever pitch.
