The children are all long gone now. No children playing outside under the old tree that once held a swing, no laughter inside the school house as a teacher trying to get her students to pay attention. The school is quiet now, windows broken, door open, the books & laughter faded into a distant memory. But the tree is still there, bigger now, but still waiting, waiting.....

 

Was it 25….35 years ago when the old school closed the old woman said sadly gazing upon it from her porch from across the street. The children, she continued are of course all grown-up now, some became local ranchers and farmers, but most of them, most of them left the area and left their memories & dreams behind. At the time she said softly, I never thought those old days and times would ever pass, but past they did, and now there is only me and that big old tree. I’m old now, abandoned just like my old schoolhouse, a remembrance of what was and can never be again.

12 years has now pass:

 

I learned sadly that the old school teacher Miss Lange, died last winter of 2023. And surprisingly some of her prior students and their families members gathered to pay their last respects. They held her wake on the old school grounds and per her finally wish her ashes were spread around the old school grounds. There was something special about this old woman who touch my heart and her old abandon school house across the street. I would often stop to poke my head inside whenever I drove by. It was while doing this that another local neighbor talk to me about her. She never married it is told and her school children were her children.

 

R.I.P....May you now enjoy again those memories of long ago...

A couple of months after Miss Lange pass, the owner of the property had the old school house torn down and the lumber use now for another purpose. I'm glad they waited until her passing. That was very kind.

Now it's only the old tree that now stands guard over the memories of the past....

While I enjoy Flickr too much to leave, I thought it made a good opportunity to sort through old works and decide on discards - that which I've done to get below 1,000.

 

Right now I've decided to open a second "archival" account and slowly transfer older works in a process. There's no reason to follow that account though it's appreciated, and will keep anyone wanting to continue seeing my work from having to do anything at all. It will still come through as normal.

 

Thanks for the support over the years, and I hope we can all continue doing this and share in some way!

This piece was inspired by a CBC interview with Jann Arden who spoke about her mother (before she passed away) who was suffering from Alzheimer’s. She asked her mother if she would forget her and her mother replied: “My mind might but my heart won’t.” From that interview, Bernice came up with the idea of creating “Remember Me” to resemble a “Love Heart” candy to evoke memories, nostalgia, familiarity, sentimentality, a little humour, some fun and most of all, lots of love.

 

The Fragile Mind: In Case of Emergency Break Glass

The design is a geometric pattern that is derived from deep within Dave’s mind. Each design is created intuitively and is based on the mandala pattern that begins at the centre of the drawing. Each drawing is based on the moment it is made and allows for the artist’s own innate creative style to emerge in the process. He doesn’t know in advance how each drawing will turn out and every viewer sees something different.

 

Let’s Just See What Tomorrow Brings

Tony’s piece is about staying optimistic about advances in brain health and science. He uses a grizzly bear to represent Gord Downie as a symbol of courage – something Downie exuded, especially when facing his brain cancer diagnosis and continuing to tour and speak about issues close to his heart. Staying optimistic and being courageous in the face of adversity are just two of the virtues the artist learned from Downie and tries to practise daily. The autumn leaves are a metaphor for the cycles in life we go through, constantly changing both physically and spiritually.
