I love Laikipia Wilderness Camp and the ability to get out of the vehicle and shoot wildlife on your own terms. This young calf was wary and hid behind it’s mother’s legs but eventually came out of cover to enjoy a drink from the still flowing river. Taken one evening along the riverbank hiding behind scrub and feeling privileged to watch a family of elephants enjoy the water.

How close can you go? I had lots of close encounters with elephants in Samburu. Just sit in the car and a herd will wander by as they munch their way through the foliage.

Samburu is a lovely place to watch elephants. We watched this pair meet and greet each other as they crossed the dried riverbed. The larger one chased the smaller one and then they tussled a little before eventually settling into an embrace.

That bull elephant in musth again. This guy was following a herd of matriarchs and their herd. Keeping an eye on a young bull family member and making sure he kept back from the rest of the herd. At some point the herd slowed down and the bull decided to get a little amorous with this termite mound where he snuggled it with his trunk, dry humped it and then scratched his butt on it. Last light of the day and this cheeky young calf finally emerged from behind its mother to give our vehicle a disapproving head shake before it ran back to hide behind mum’s legs.

Sizable herd of elephants walking, mid morning, with purpose. Possibly heading down to the river for a drop to drink or just trying to evade an amorous bull that was in musth and following them. We just sat and watched them pass in a matter of minutes.

Elephants are truly a very majestic creature and the social bond they show within the herd is amazing. The matriarch of the herd is the undisputed leader and is always there in the front in case of any trouble or fear from humans.
Why human beings have to senselessly slaughter such a majestic animal for their teeth is beyond logical explanations.
ONLY ELEPHANTS SHOULD WEAR IVORY

The image is creative process from my raw files of images taken in Uganda this year with Peter Hogel and speculates the last Elephant on planet earth.
Elephants are among the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Their complex social relationships, kinship bonds, and capacity for emotions makes them unique in the animal kingdom. They are the gardeners of the forest and the keepers of the Savannah. Without them the biodiversity in these ecosystems would collapse. In the past 100 years African elephant populations have been reduced by 97%. More than 50% of Africa’s remaining elephants could be killed in the next 10 years if illegal poaching continues at the current rate.
The truth is…the fewer elephants left on our planet, the higher the price for ivory. Throughout Asia, ivory has long been seen as a symbol of wealth. With China's booming middle class, demand for it has skyrocketed.
Hidden beneath China's storied, tradition-based facade lies a modern-day black market of epic proportions — a secret pipeline where traffickers use any means possible to smuggle poached ivory into carving mills and where riches are made at the expense of the African elephant.
Ivory is a much-sought-after luxury. Fashioned into figurines, jewelry and even chopsticks, ivory increases in price the scarcer it becomes. In today's times, it's more valuable even than gold.
