shortly after my grandmother died my aunt gave me a couple of boxes of old photographs. Most of them do not have any writing on them, and we do not know who the people are....

Dinner before the flight home! I can't remember what the name of the Thai place was, but it's situated right next to a movie theater in Downtown Berkeley and it's name started with a 'p', I think. Must go back soon; it was super filling and smelled so, so good...mmm...

Today I finally finished my China book. I have been reading it on and off since my last ship. It's a very lovely book, and I have read others by Anchee Min. She's a very talented writer, and I love her imagery. I also love all things oriental and read many books about China and Japan. This poem at the end was beautiful and really moved me. I have no idea who it's by, but apparently it's a Tang dynasty poem entitled 'The Tune of the Posaman'
I live by the Yangtze river near its source
While you reside further down its course
You and I drink water out of the same stream
I haven’t seen you though daily of you I dream
When will this river cease to run?
When shall I not love you, the way I do?
I only wish our two hearts would beat as one
And you wouldn’t disappoint me in my love for you
Also of note is 'Across the Nightingale Floor' and subsequent sequels. I forget who they're by, I started reading them in year 9 I think.
There is another picture of this book on a different bed. It made me remember what seems now almost a dream, a different time. There are several reasons for the title, this being one.
Another more obvious one is that it's firework night tonight, so that fits, and also this time last year was a very happy time for me. Phil met my sister for the first time. We DTR'd (my new word off Laura) and I let him in to my life. One might say foolishly given that all that happened since makes it appear as if that night meant nothing. But it was still a nice night, and there were lovely times afterwards in Windermere before I found out what had happened in between.
Also, tonight I did some remembering of my own. I am prone to dwelling on the past, turning it over in my head and seeking out answers. And when no answers are forthcoming, I think the worst. I will never fully trust anyone again and this saddens me. But we should make the most of what life gives us and at the moment, I have a lot to make the most of.
The final reason for the naming of this picture is that I stole the title off Phil :p so there we are, the five-fold meaning to a boring picture of a book.
Kudos to students at Milton High School who commemorate 9/11 by placing one flag for every individual who lost their life in the quad in front of the school. Though most of the students have only a vague recollection of the events that transpired on this day and forever changed our world, their efforts are very much appreciated by the community - especially by those whose lives were directly impacted on this tragic day.
Shortly after taking this pic, while I chatted with a photog friend, an SUV pulled up. My friend recognized the woman waving from the front seat of the vehicle and the two were soon sharing a friendly hug, while several spilled out of the doors and gathered round and the woman's husband slowly walked over. Somewhere in the midst of this joy was also a deep sorrow, and the reason for the visit was soon shared: the husband had lost his sister, the woman her sister-in-law on 9/11. In memory of the loss, they named their beautiful and youngest daughter Margaret, after the sister.
Despite the fact that the events of 9/11/2001 took place nine years ago, it's hard not to remember and now to have met a man who lost his sister - in her 30's - serves as another reminder of the very real impact so many experienced on this day.
Blessings to Peter and Sherry Walier and their family on this day.

What if the US had not been attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941 or at any other place or time during WW2? Could the isolationist US still have been drawn into the war in any other way? If not, would the dictatorships of Tojo and Hitler and Mussolini have remained in power?
This 300 page book was published in 1991 when there must have been many more people than now still living who witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. I bought this excellent condition used hardcover 3 weeks ago from our public library's used books shop and am reading it so slowly that I won't be surprised if it's a year or two before I finish reading it.
“I remember the large-set Roman Catholic woman who came up from the audience after Anne appeared on a Philadelphia TV talk show in 1983, grabbed my mother from behind and choked her and wouldn't let go. My Dad, who fortunately was with her, couldn't budge the assailant until he used his crutches! The attack made the Philly newspapers.”

Do you remember the feeling?
The moment before you touched your first precious lens?
I took some shots to remember the feeling before I took the wrapper off.
My mother gave me this family piece recently. It's a blown glass paperweight with a hand-drawn propagandistic slogan "Remember the Maine" imbedded inside. I remembered the phrase dimly...like "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember the Twin Towers" . Over a hundred years ago it was part of the campaign to get us into the Spanish-American War - when an American warship, The Maine, was mysteriously blown up in Havana harbor. I've added it to my collection of paperweights.
