Great Blue Heron

During breeding season, the lore of the great blue heron will turn a bright blue, the iris will turn reddish, and the yellow bill will take on an orange hue.

We decided to return to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. With all the rain California has experienced of late, sunny days have been few and far between. It was nice to see water everywhere, and we mean everywhere. Gadwall populations have grown exponentially over the past several decades, surpassing pintails, green-winged teal, and wigeon to become the fourth most numerous ducks, exceeded only by mallards, lesser scaup, and blue-winged teal.

Regal is a macro photo of a tulip in vertical format. it is a part of a series.

a very composed and dignified cat I met once

I found this photo when I was trawling through my archives. Taken at Smith Park, Richmond. The last few times I have visited the park, the swans have been nowhere to be seen. I hope they come back one day.

Male Regal Jumping Spider. This species is found is found in the southeastern U.S., the Greater Antilles, and the Bahamas, but is most common in peninsular Florida. This particular specimen was captive bred.

With all the El Nino rains we have had this winter many trees are covered in beautiful lush green moss and bright yellow lichen. The redwood trees are even more stunning than usual this time of year.

My spirit is called back to Africa today. I remember so clearly how the evening sun illuminated this female cheetah as she posed on a nearby hill - majesty and grace

Captive bred Regal Jumping Spider.

I thought Jasper looked kind of regal, posed on this mesquite trunk. Or maybe like he's posing for his senior portrait.

Brahminy Kite

Daintree River, FNQ

I was stoked to see a brand new bird of prey on my recent FNQ trip - the Brahminy Kite (formerly known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle). Its diet consists of a lot of fish, some insects, and it happily feasts on carrion. My first glimpse of one was on the highway where I nearly ran it over as it was enjoying some roadkill. I'm very glad I didn't, but we sure gave each other a damn good scare. My first photo op came shortly after. The chestnut brown body of this raptor was stunning to see up-close, and I snapped this pic from a boat as it was taking in the sunset from a perch on the Daintree River.

A Wisconsin Endangered Species, and listed as Federal Species of Concern.
