The Namtok Phliu National Park covers an area of 134.5 square kilometers along forestland at Khao Sa Bap mountain range. The 3-level Phliu waterfall features a basin of cool, clear water for splashing around and plenty of large fish called Tor Soro. This fish is family of the carps and lives mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. The Tor Soro will face the stream current and swim against it to stay in place. They do this and wait for little insects, worms, and other food to float by on the current. It is an easy way for them to catch food without having to swim around. These soft-finned freshwater fishes typically having toothless jaws and are harmless to human.

We were really surprise by the number of fish at the waterfall. At first we were afraid to go into the water but step by step we get used to these friendly creatures. Het nationale Park van Namtok Phliu heeft een oppervlakte van 134.5 vierkante kilometer langs de bergketen van Khao Sa Bap. De waterval van Phlui heeft drie niveaus. Er is een bassin met lekker koel water om te zwemmen en te spatten met een overvloed grote Tor Soro vissen. Deze vis is familie van de karpers en leeft hoofdzakelijk in Indonesië, Maleisië, Myanmar en Thailand. Ze zwemmen tegen de stroming van de waterval in om op hun plaats te blijven. Zij doen dit en wachten op kleine insecten, wormen en ander voedsel dat langs stroomt. Het is een gemakkelijke manier voor hen om voedsel te vangen zonder te moeten rond zwemmen. Deze zachte vin zoetwatervissen hebben tandenloze kaken en zijn dan ook niet gevaarlijk voor mensen.

Dubai has an active music scene, with musicians from all of the world having performed in the city. Culture is frequently subject to censorship in Dubai. Homosexuality, drugs, and the theory of evolution are generally considered taboo. The emirate's main revenues are from tourism, trade, real estate and financial services. Revenues from petroleum and natural gas contribute less than 6% of Dubai's billion economy.

Tegenwoordig wordt nog maar 6% van het geld in Dubai verdiend aan olie. De toeristenindustrie is een van de sectoren waar veel in geïnvesteerd wordt. Zo worden er verschillende kunstmatige eilanden aangelegd voor de kust, momenteel twee kunstmatige palmeilanden. Dubai is oorspronkelijk een belangrijke stad als handelsroute naar het westen. Een belangrijke vrijhandel betreft die van goud. Tegenwoordig is Dubai zich in een snel tempo aan het ontwikkelen in de toeristenindustrie, financiële dienstverlening en IT. In tegenstelling tot veel omliggende landen op het Arabisch schiereiland is Dubai modern en zeer internationaal georiënteerd. Westerse kleding, vrouwen op hogere posities, alcohol en de meeste andere westerse gewoontes worden hier inmiddels redelijk als normaal gezien. Dubai is één van de veiligste plaatsen ter wereld. Criminaliteit komt nauwelijks voor. Uiteraard dient men altijd oplettend te zijn. Dubai bevindt zich in een politiek instabiele regio. Dubai zelf ondervindt hier weinig last van omdat het zich vrij neutraal opstelt in de Midden-Oosten problematiek. Er is echter altijd een kans dat problemen in omliggende landen van invloed kunnen zijn op de veiligheid in Dubai.

De karpers die wij kennen komt eigenlijk uit China. De Romeinen haalden de eerste karpers naar Europa waarna de monniken vijvers hadden waar ze deze vissen in kweekten. Ze konden dan toch eten wanneer ze moesten vasten en geen vlees mochten eten. Er wist natuurlijk altijd wel een vis te ontsnappen zodat de karper zich in Europa heeft kunnen nestelen.

Dubai has a number of beautiful beaches like famous Palm Beach. The year round sunshine and excellent soft sandy beaches along the coast are ideal for relaxing, lazing or sun bathing. For the more active, there are water sports to be enjoyed in the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf. Winters in Dubai are pleasant but during summer temperatures can reach up to 45-50 degrees centigrade with equally high humidity. There is also a public beach at Al Mamzar Park on the Deira side of the Creek. The public facilities include playgrounds, barbecue sites, food kiosks, and picnic areas. Dubai beaches offer a plenty of recreational activities including beach volleyball, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, paragliding, windsurfing or any other water-sport you desire to enjoy. Jumeirah Beach is the most famous and popular beach in Dubai. Actually, it is a long stretch of beach on the Arabian Gulf flanked by hotels and private clubs, interspaced by a few public access marine beaches. The Jumeirah beaches have soft white sand that slip into the shallow warm turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf.

After the hectic of the Souks at Bastakia Quarter in the old Dubai we wanted to have some lunch at the beach of Dubai. During summer months, the weather is uncomfortably hot and humid so the best way to survive is a dip in the sea. For us Dutchies is very odd to see a car on the beach. In Holland it's not allowed but it seems in the desert city Dubai no problemo ;-)

Een prachtige plek aan het strand is restaurant Eauzone in het One and Only Royal Mirage hotel aan de voet van het palmeiland Jumeirah. Hier kun je een heerlijke lunch krijgen op het strand met uitzicht over het palmeiland en de Dubai Marina. Het restaurant is onderdeel van een immens hotelresort opgetrokken in Arabische stijl. Een Ceasar Salad of een lunchmaaltijd met noodles, groente en kip kost circa €12. Valt mee dus voor zo’n luxe resort. Na de lunch kun je blijven hangen op het mooie strand of aan een van de zwembaden. Na vijf uur opent de Rooftop Bar waar je het hangend in oosterse kussens donker kan zien worden. Als je wilt relaxen bij het water kun je in de meeste hotels bij het zwembad gaan liggen. De grote hotel resorts aan het strand hebben allemaal hun eigen strand dat vaak ook voor gasten toegankelijk is als je maar consumeert. Openbare stranden zijn er in de wijken Jumeirah en Umm Suqeim. Een vreemd gezicht voor ons is de auto op het strand maar in de woestijnstad Dubai is dat geen probleem ;-)
