Um eine Belichtungsmessung durch das Objektiv (TTL) bei voll geöffneter Blende (Offenblendenmessung) zu ermöglichen, muss ein am Objektiv eingestellter Blendenwert an den Belichtungsmesssystem im Kameragehäuse übermittelt werden. Hierzu wurden von verschiedenen Herstellern unterschiedliche Systeme entwickelt. Nikon verwendete hierfür einen auf dem Blendenring angeordneten Mitnehmer mit Schlitz, in den ein am Kameragehäuse angeordneter Stift eingriff. Bei der Drehung des Blendenringes wurde der Stift durch den Mitnehmer mitbewegt und in eine dem eingestellten Blendenwert entsprechende Stellung gebracht. Der Mitnehmer am Objektiv war lange ein charakteristisches Merkmal von Nikkor-Objektiven und wurde zur Gewährleistung der Abwärtskompatibilität auch nach Ablösung der Mitnehmer-Stift-Anordnung durch das AI-System 1977 beibehalten.

To facilitate exposure metering through the lens (TTL) with the aperture fully open (open aperture metering), an aperture value set on the lens must be transmitted to the exposure metering system in the camera body. Different systems have been developed by different manufacturers for this purpose. To this end, Nikon used a cam with a slot located on the aperture ring, which was engaged by a pin located on the camera body. When the aperture ring was rotated, the pin was moved by the cam and brought into a position corresponding to the set aperture value. The cam on the lens was long a characteristic feature of Nikkor lenses and was retained for backward compatibility after the AI system replaced the cam-and-pin arrangement in 1977.
