I decided to do a shot of Rumblemumbles, so dug in the archives and found this one from Dec 2008.

 

I really liked the photo, but the background was very vanilla and was horrible. I can't even remember where we took it.

 

In order to transport her to a new level, it is first necessary to "extract" her from the original, and the difficulty in that varies depending on edges, so if you want to make your editing life easier, always have children with thick black straight hair that isn't wispy.

 

I decided to use a new tool in PS CS5 called Cutout And Refine Edge. You can see a tutorial here.

 

This new selection tool is vastly improved on the basic selection technique, and the secret is in the user interface at the edge refining part. There are various preview modes and adjustments available in the refining popup, making the final selection so much easier than in earlier versions.

 

I have seen 3rd party software that did a good job on selections, such as Fluid Mask, but this new PS tool makes it possible to complete without leaving PS, and will probably be the demise of those 3rd party efforts.

 

The edges of hair is always tricky and this was no exception, but the result isn't too bad.

 

After finalising the selection where she was extracted from the vanilla essence, I added a new gradient layer behind the cutout, using a plain reverse radial black and white gradient, as you can see here.

 

This provides a nice highlight background with a wonderful contrast to the pink top.

 

Yes, we do miss her since she left the nest, but she has made a great effort to visit and call a lot, so we have got used to her absence.

This image is part of an astrometric observation, taken to determine Deimos' position over Mars with extreme accuracy. These observations inform studies to refine the mass of the Martian moons, how their orbits evolve, and how the slight amount of tidal energy they create on the Martian surface is dissipated.

 

This image was taken during Mars Express' 18,782nd orbit of the red planet.

I will tweak this style a little but have been wanting to use this fabric for something like this for a while :)

refining the technique

Trying to refine a portable lighting system for my trip to Ireland in June. I'll be doing more portraits there for the Fifty Female Faces book project.

 

I've been using a big softbox but need to emulate the light quality with off-camera flash and umbrellas. I just can't lug all that stuff to Ireland and then spend a bunch of money on power transformers. This was a test I did last night. Light is a little harder than my softbox but I have some ideas on how to make it more diffused.

 

For this shot, I used a 60" reflective umbrella with a 430EX II strobe set to half power and 24mm. The diffusion screen on the flash was engaged. The umbrella was set directly above and behind the camera. I also used a 24" silver reflector which is on the model's lap.

Next comes stickers

As I exited the data core having made the necessary alterations needed to match my story to Kal-El I planned to begin training to refine the raw abilities that this planet gives me. Sadly, with this ship having just escaped the final battle of Krypton, most of its assets had been stripped, including all the training drones used to help refine the talents of young recruits. No good having them in a battle if they can’t aim or a fire the gun.

 

Fortunately Brainiac offered a solution.

 

“General.”

 

“Yes Brainiac?”

 

“I believe I have a solution to your lack of training drones problem.”

 

“What might that be?”

 

“A ship of this class always comes with a navigator-class droid body for the Brainiac unit to help co-ordinate all ship movements in the event of the crew becoming incapacitated. If you were to transfer my program into the navigator body I would be able to operate the body and you would thus be allowed to practice combat against me.”

 

“That sounds like a good idea Brainiac. But won't this affect the ships functions if I transfer you into this body and out of the mainframe?”

 

“Ships functions shall not be hampered. The unit shall have direct control over ship functions despite not being in the ship mainframe itself, allowing remote control over the ship even if the unit is not present onboard. ”

 

“Good. You may proceed.”

 

“Affirmative sir”

 

There was a brief surge in the ships power as, I presume, Brainiac carried out the process he had spoken of. With in a few moments out from behind the door to the ships Mainframe walked this robotic body, this must be the body Brainiac talked about.

 

“Brainiac?”>

 

“Affirmative.”

 

“Did it work?”

 

“All systems in this unit are operating at 98.27% efficiency. Not the level of efficiency I would desire but well above acceptable standards, I shall endeavor to correct these issues at a later date.”

 

“Do you still have Kal-El’s signal?”

 

“Affirmative, the ship is still tracking Kal-El’s signal.”

 

“Good. Be sure you that you keep track of him, and keep me posted of any developments. Now, I need you to create an emergency program to activate at a moments notice once we’re outside.”

 

“What program would that be Sir?”

 

“Once given the command you will instantly attach the hazard armor to me, regardless of the current situation.”

 

“Affirmative. Program created. Did you desire to have this program created in order to stop the unknown abilities your species acquires on exposure to this Planet from overwhelming you?”

 

“That is correct Brainiac.”

 

“Affirmative Sir. Do you wish to begin a training programme?"

 

“Yes Brainiac. Run programme five and open the bay doors."

 

"Yes General."

 

No sooner had he spoken those words that the bay doors began to open revealing the bright light that must be this Planet's sun shining on a white coloured ground. As the light of the sun shined on me, I felt a painful sensation in my eyes as if they were getting hotter, and hotter. It seems that I was acquiring the powers that I had previously when I first stepped out of the ship.

 

The pain of the heat in my eyes was excruciating but I had combat it. Kal-El has not been overpowered by these new abilities so clearly he has mastered them, and if a cowards son can achieve mastery of such phenomenal gifts then one of Kryptons finest Generals could as well. With this I stepped out of the ship and the door sealed itself behind me.

The following takes place in parallel with Man of Tomorrow #18

An interesting small booklet that is a special issue of the company's house magazine, the Tate & Lyle Times. It was produced "for all interested in sugar ... customers, shareholders, employees and visitors to our refineries". Undated it includes data including 1956.

 

Tate & Lyle were the dominant UK sugar refiner and producer formed by merger in 1921 and acquisitions. In post-WW2 years the company agressively fought what was seen as a proposal to nationalise the industry, along with the British Sugar Corporation that held an effective monopoly over the beet manufacturing of sugar, and as part of this invented the "Mr. Cube" advertising symbol who is seen on the cover of the magazine. The company had distinctive packaging for the various products and product ranges they produced. The booklet loos at the history of sugar, the company and it's then contemporaty activities. Needless to say the sugar trades links to slavery gets scant coverage.

 

The booklet has three fine fold-out plans of the company's three major production sites. The Liverpool Love Lane refinery and the Thames refinery in London had come to the company from the Tate side of the business with the Plaistow Wharf refinery being the dowry of the Lyle side of the merger. Sadly no artist nor designer is credited for these rather fine cross-section plans.

 

The Liverpool Love Lane site was purchased by Henry Tate in 1872 when he acquired the rights to the Bouivin Loiseau process of sugar refining that was a technological advance on earlier methods of refining. Merseyside, home to the major port of Liverpool, was an early home to the sugar industry with various refineries including those with links to one of the earliest homes of the industry, Greenock on the River Clyde in Scotland.

Size comparison with modern Nimitz class supercarrier for scale. (Nimitz should be very close on length and beam, but height and finer detail at this size are tricky. As is hull shaping on such an uneven design, especially at this small size. But the point was to show what we refer to as "perfect grade, which is 1 stud = 10 meters, hence this 184.4 stud long ship would be 1,844 meters long at this scale.)

That direction was the disputed, war-torn, no-man’s-waste-land of space known as The Divide, (working title) situated between the major powers of the galaxy. Life in The Divide was desperate, with little hope for the many people stranded in the ruins, poverty, and crime infested land. None of the major powers could intervene without starting another territorial war, and as such, pirates, gangs, and unscrupulous mega-corporations ruled supreme.

 

Courtland wanted to make a difference to this sorrowful place, and with trillions of credits and a Fortunes 1,000 company at his control, he had the means to at least begin; although even he lacked the ability to single-handedly remedy the myriad of woes The Divide faced.

 

David’s plan was simple, to move significant mining operations to The Divide, thus:

1: Creating new, safe, well-paying, good jobs for both an area and an industry that seldom offered such things.

2: Allowing for the placement of company security forces to deter pirate activity around major settlements.

3: Providing tax-free revenue to fund new schools, hospitals, food, water, shetler, and other charitable activities in The Divide.

  

But to do it, he required a new kind of mining vessel, as well as additional security forces. Thus he contacted Nelson Heavy Industries, who in turn partnered with AxonTech Interstellar Systems for some components, to place an order for a line of custom massive deep space mining operation flagships with enhanced combat capabilities and capable of operating in the remotest reaches of space for months or even years at a time. And so the Bessemer class was born.

 

The Bessemer class is unlike any mining vessel ever produced before it. Certainly significantly larger mining ships existed, but these were typically little more than unarmed, slow moving things with small engines; closer to a semi-mobile starbase than a combination frontier battleship/mining vessel. But Courtland required something unique. Something that could move faster, survive more punishment, and something that had teeth; not a fragile, barely moving thing that would only sit in safe areas of space. Courtland needed a mighty sheepdog in a world of sheep and wolves.

 

Bessemer class vessels are 1,844 meters long, and possess more armor, firepower, and shielding than many pre Great War battleship designs. Almost any pirate or local gang would be terrified of the sight of over a mile of steel and particle cannons; clad in Kolter white, green, and yellow.

 

But the Bessemer, and others of her class, are not merely warships masquerading as civilian craft. They are heavy mining machines that live up to their name; a steel producing process that revolutionized the industry of Earth some seven hundred years earlier. The Bessemer and her sister ships are capable of blasting metal-rich asteroids to bits with their coaxial mining particle beam cannon, and then having swarms of automated mining drones devour any valuable deposits within before unloading the materials into the Bessemer’s ore hold for the internal rail system to run any raw ore through her six corvette sized forges, and then having the refined metal shunted to her cavernous lower hold, while any waste material from the refining process is vented directly into space.

 

Ships of this class are outfitted with a sizable hangar, advanced sensor suite, extensive internal cargo bays, and large cargo pod clamps that allow it to act in the capacity of miner, defensive ship, operations command center, and even freighter and personnel carrier should usual shipping to outlying mining sites be disrupted.

 

But capable as they are, these are not the spartan mining vessels with unlivable working conditions that some shady companies have been known to operate. These space-faring cities of steel feature robust safety systems, spacious and comfortable crew quarters, multiple restaurants, multiple mess-halls, multiple shops for clothing, food, electronics, and other items, an arcade, multiple gyms with weights, various weight and cardio machines, martial arts areas, gymnastics equipment, along with a walking track, a small bowling alley, an olympic sized swimming pool, a multi-sport stadium, a greenhouse, hydroponics bays, a small stage/concert area, several computer labs, a library, a small movie theater, crew lounges and break areas, a salon/spa, a bar/club, chapels, classroom/daycare areas, office areas, as well as repair stations, enough dry and frozen storage to keep everyone fed for extended missions, advanced workshops, astrotography, laboratories, guest bunk-rooms, and a starbase grade medical center.

 

Not everyone is happy about Kolter Mining’s efforts, however. While Courtland founded the Kolter Foundation to aid those in need, he also lobbied for what came to be known as the Kolter Bill to be passed. Mining employees out in the colonies loved the added protections this afforded them. But the executives of Kolter’s rival mining companies operating out of Earth’s colony worlds quickly found themselves facing laws that favored the profits of Kolter and their already developed safety systems and excellent treatment of employees. What’s more, the Federal Defense Navy Admiralty have been continually frustrated that rather than helping to line their pockets as part of the military industrial complex, Courtland has been working tirelessly to reveal their corruption and hidden support of crime in outlying areas of space.

 

What’s more, there are even rumors that Courtland is now working with, and possibly even helping to fund, a mercenary vigilante unit out in The Divide known as the Phoenix Command Group, founded by Jonathan Scarlett, another former Federal Defense Navy Captain who ran afoul of the Admiralty.

 

The wealthy and corrupt among the Admiralty, military industrial complex, crime syndicates, and corrupt businesses running shady operations out in The Divide are deeply troubled by these rumors. But those who are now citizens of no nation, and who have known nothing but hopelessness and need for years, have a slight spark of hope rising like a Phoenix.

   

IRL info: This digital SHIP was made in Bricklink’s Studio software from September 11th to September 30th, 2021. I did not originally plan to participate in SHIPtember, but I couldn’t resist. It is 184 studs (58.1 inches) long, 50 studs wide, and 48 studs high. It is comprised of 23,470 pieces, which I believe makes it my highest piece-count SHIP to date, and means that the model itself has a mass of 973.502 ounces, or 60.843 pounds, or 27.597 kilograms, which most likely makes it my heaviest SHIP as well as my most piece intensive. (I really need to learn to build a little more hollow.) Note that it uses all real pieces/colors that are available for sale on Bricklink. (Albeit at a price that makes attempting to build it in physical bricks highly impractical.) It is 100% connected, and should be at least somewhat stable in real life. I would want to reinforce the fore-end with more Technic, and switch out the longest Lego Technic axle holding the engine for an aftermarket stainless steel version. I cannot guarantee that various sections built out from the main SNOT and Technic frame would be totally stable without slight redesign of a few bits. It would also require a hefty display stand of some kind.

 

The current pictures are WIP to show the completed status of the build itself. Better renders done by importing the Studio build into Mecabricks, replacing any pieces that fail to load or change position, and then exporting to Blender for higher quality rendering, and finally hopefully doing some cool backgrounds with GIMP, will hopefully follow before whatever October picture deadline is decided on. IRL info: This digital SHIP was made in Bricklink’s Studio software from September 11th to September 30th, 2021. I did not originally plan to participate in SHIPtember, but I couldn’t resist. It is 184 studs (58.1 inches) long, 50 studs wide, and 48 studs high. It is comprised of 23,470 pieces, which I believe makes it my highest piece-count SHIP to date, and means that the model itself has a mass of 973.502 ounces, or 60.843 pounds, or 27.597 kilograms, which most likely makes it my heaviest SHIP as well as my most piece intensive. (I really need to learn to build a little more hollow.) Note that it uses all real pieces/colors that are available for sale on Bricklink. (Albeit at a price that makes attempting to build it in physical bricks highly impractical.) It is 100% connected, and should be at least somewhat stable in real life. I would want to reinforce the fore-end with more Technic, and switch out the longest Lego Technic axle holding the engine for an aftermarket stainless steel version. I cannot guarantee that various sections built out from the main SNOT and Technic frame would be totally stable without slight redesign of a few bits. It would also require a hefty display stand of some kind.

IRL info: This digital SHIP was made in Bricklink’s Studio software from September 11th to September 30th, 2021. I did not originally plan to participate in SHIPtember, but I couldn’t resist. It is 184 studs (58.1 inches) long, 50 studs wide, and 48 studs high. It is comprised of 23,470 pieces, which I believe makes it my highest piece-count SHIP to date, and means that the model itself has a mass of 973.502 ounces, or 60.843 pounds, or 27.597 kilograms, which most likely makes it my heaviest SHIP as well as my most piece intensive. (I really need to learn to build a little more hollow.) Note that it uses all real pieces/colors that are available for sale on Bricklink. (Albeit at a price that makes attempting to build it in physical bricks highly impractical.) It is 100% connected, and should be at least somewhat stable in real life. IRL info: This digital SHIP was made in Bricklink’s Studio software from September 11th to September 30th, 2021. I did not originally plan to participate in SHIPtember, but I couldn’t resist. It is 184 studs (58.1 inches) long, 50 studs wide, and 48 studs high. It is comprised of 23,470 pieces, which I believe makes it my highest piece-count SHIP to date, and means that the model itself has a mass of 973.502 ounces, or 60.843 pounds, or 27.597 kilograms, which most likely makes it my heaviest SHIP as well as my most piece intensive. (I really need to learn to build a little more hollow.) Note that it uses all real pieces/colors that are available for sale on Bricklink. (Albeit at a price that makes attempting to build it in physical bricks highly impractical.) It is 100% connected, and should be at least somewhat stable in real life. I would want to reinforce the fore-end with more Technic, and switch out the longest Lego Technic axle holding the engine for an aftermarket stainless steel version. `The site of the factory was included in Section 2B [of the original Port Melbourne survey], which was surveyed into four allotments early in the history of Sandridge. By November 1860 three of these had been purchased by A. Ross, joining William Jones, S.G. Henty and P. Lalor as owners of the section (2)..

In February 1890, the Melbourne Tram and Omnibus Company Limited, had stables, offices, land and an omnibus repository on the section.(3) [Most of the present buildings on the site date from 1891, when the Australasian Sugar Refining Company established a refinery.(4)] On the MMBW detail plan dated 1894, the section is labelled 'sugar works' and the configuration of buildings approximately conforms with the present layout. [The refinery was closed in 1894 following its purchase by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company as part of a move to strengthen its monopoly.].

[In 1899, Robert Harper and Company Pty Ltd converted the buildings to a starch factory, and various brick additions were constructed to designs by Hyndman and Bates, architects.(5)] When the sewerage was connected in 1899, a plan was drawn by the architects and this closely resembles the 1894 MMBW detail plan configuration. (6) .

The buildings .. form the major part of the original factory complex on the site, one of the largest nineteenth century industrial sites in Victoria. The complex as a whole is significant for its large size and range of building types. The dramatic massing and height of the 9 Beach Street buildings gives them additional importance as local landmarks as viewed both from the surrounding streets and the sea..

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS.

The former Australasian Sugar Refining Company and Robert Harper starch factory complex can be compared with a number of other large nineteenth century industrial complexes in Melbourne. These include the former Yorkshire Brewery, Wellington Street, Collingwood (from 1876), the former Victoria Brewery, Victoria Parade, East Melbourne (established 1854), the former Kimpton's Flour Mill, Elizabeth Street, Kensington, the Thomas Brunt flour mill and Brockhoff and T.B. Guest biscuit factories complex, Laurens and Munster Streets, North Melbourne (from 1888-9) and the Joshua Bros (now CSR) sugar refinery, Whitehall Street, Yarraville (established 1873). All of these are representative of the development in Victoria of the manufacture of foodstuffs and related raw materials. Of these, the CSR refinery is the most directly comparable in terms of original function and the scale and massing of the buildings. Established significantly earlier than the Port Melbourne refinery, the site is larger and more intact..

In the local context, the only other surviving industrial site of comparable scale is the Swallow and Ariell Biscuit Factory complex (q.v.). This complex is of state significance, and is considerably earlier, with parts dating from the 1850s. The predominantly two- and three-storey buildings, however, are of a different type to the former refinery and starch factory buildings..

Used refine edges in CS5, have to get used to it, but the first result is nice. Can be done better I guess, but that takes practice. For now, I'm pleased with it. The bubbles weren't originally there :)

Something new to refine and deliver. Not sure what version this is but took some time in post to high and low the curves. Needs a fair bit more going on, maybe some wee little football players? Probably more roughness on the leather. But that said, I am chuffed with how it's turned out so far (12/1/23)

I am probably going to still refine some detail into this painting for my Scifi Novel. You will notice that I made the trees smaller to give the city a Larger look and layer after layer on the trees. Again this is still a WIP but I'm at the ending point with this piece. Let me know if there are areas where I should put more effort into. Thanks for looking and also the friends already who have given pointers.

If sales were quite good in 2017 (14.539 units in 7 months), the 1st half-year 2018 wasn't : only 2.938 units.

Refining. It's actually kind of fun to take work in progress shots. Then I can see what used to be, and what improvements were made. I like how lean and big chested it is in this picture.

 

Shape is really important for me. If the shape is right, the rest flows into place. For this particular build, the construction is centered around the cornerstone white cockpit design. Without finding a solution on how to stack two tiles in this way, I would never have continued with this concept.

 

Other things to note, this build is far more complicated than the 1/44 RX-78, which this frame is based off. It will still be 1/144 as well, just more detailed and edgy, a hard thing to do at this scale.

 

Movement is going to be improved too. I came up with a double joint system while building another secret mech, and I've adopted the technique here. Perhaps in the future I will take a few "how to" shots on how to do this double joint thingy. Then perhaps people will use less of those "horrendous" T joints in their mechs. Well, to each their own.

 

Wow this is getting to be a long info blurp. Anyways, I dislike showing joints. T joints, I virtually refuse to use. That may be how I set my mechs apart from other frames out there.

I’ve been working on refining the needles on this cork bark Japanese black pine. These needles are most likely going to be on the long side, giving the tree a shaggy effect.

  

Meanwhile, the bark continues to mature., taking the form of obi-sash ridges.

  

Last year, during this time period, the trunk grew an astonishing amount in diameter. I wonder if it will happen again, this year?

Cork Harbour is a natural harbour and river estuary at the mouth of the River Lee in County Cork, Ireland. It is one of several which lay claim to the title of "second largest natural harbour in the world by navigational area" (after Port Jackson, Sydney). Other contenders include Halifax Harbour in Canada, and Poole Harbour in the United Kingdom.

 

The harbour has been a working port, and a strategic defensive hub, for centuries, and it has been one of Ireland’s major employment hubs since the early 1900s. Traditional, heavy, industries have waned in recent years, with the likes of the closure of Irish Steel in Haulbowline and shipbuilding at Verolme. It still has major and strategic significance in energy generation, shipping, refining and, most importantly, pharmaceuticals.

 

The Royal Cork Yacht Club – the world's oldest – is based in Crosshaven. There is another marina at East Ferry on Great Island. Small facilities at Monkstown and Blackrock are used for boating, canoeing, windsurfing and jet-skiing. A number of rowing clubs have facilities on the part of the River Lee between Cork City and Blackrock.

Los Angeles is a juxtaposition. The beach cities, mountains, even the people, seem to be gorgeous. Looking around though, there are some fascinating contrasts. Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches have oil refineries at the far ends of the beach. The flight path is from LAX, the 3rd largest airport in the world. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize the industrial of LA. It's something to ponder.

 

The lovely glow is also fascinating. The city light is mostly light pollution from LAX, Los Angeles, and the urban sprawl found in the basin. It bounces off cloud cover and the smog that frequently covers Los Angeles. In this 30 second exposure, there are two very brief star trails in the upper left corner.

The Bundaberg Region.

The rich volcanic soils of the plains near Bundaberg and the Burnett River were covered with thick scrub and bush but a few adventurous pastoralists tried to establish sheep grazing there in the 1850s. It was easier away from the Bundaberg site at Gin Gin and Gayndah further inland. More white settlers came in the mid-1860s as timber cutters. In these early years clashes with the local Aboriginal people were often violent. Aboriginal massacres are known to have occurred at Gin Gin in 1850, in North Bundaberg in the early 1860s. The first timber cutters arrived in the Bundaberg area 1867 followed by the first white farmers also in 1867. The first saw mill was erected in 1868. The town site was surveyed and laid in 1870. Experimental sugar cane farms began around 1871 and within a few months the sugar mills was built. As sugar plantations increased Bundaberg ended up with four major sugar mills. The sugar cane plantations were usually owned by the mills, run as large plantations and they employed Kanaka or South Sea Islander indentured labourers. Thus like Maryborough Bundaberg became a main entry point for the South Sea Islanders. The town grew quickly as more farmers took up small selections or acreages often growing maize or small amounts of sugar cane. The local Kolan Shire council was formed in 1873 and Bundaberg was emerging as a town. It became a municipality in 1881 and a city in 1913. The discovery of copper and that start of mining operations at nearby Mt Perry in 1871 really boosted the prospects of Bundaberg. The first bank opened in 1872, the first newspaper began publication in 1875 and a coach service operated to Maryborough until the railway line was completed in 1888. The government wharf in Bundaberg was built in 1875 with the main cargoes being timber and maize. The Primitive Methodists built an early brush and timber church in 1877 and the Anglicans completed their first church in 1876. But the Catholics were the first to build a permanent church which was consecrated in 1875. The town was well established but the big transformation occurred in the early 1880s when the land owners developed the sugar industry to its full extent until sugar eclipsed all other crops. In 1881 the Bundaberg region produced 3% of QLD’s sugar crop. In 1883 it produced 20% of QLD’s sugar crop. This domination of sugar persisted from 1880 through to 1915. New sugar mills started up with the new Millaquin mill in 1882 and mills for the Youngs of Fairymead and the Gibsons of Bingera. Stable prices for sugar assisted with this development of sugar mills and by the mid-1880s more sugar farms were being established reliant on European labour instead of South Sea Islander labour. The 1885 QLD Royal Commission into malpractices with the Kanaka trade meant the government intervened more to control conditions of the indentured labourers and limited the trade. These restrictions were lifted in 1891 to boost the sugar industry again but the emerging labour unions and associations of white labourers opposed the revival of the Kanaka trade as their employment suffered because of the trade. The new Commonwealth government of 1901 made the decision to cease the trade from 1906. As the sugar industry had to restructure itself the QLD government started to build and financially back the sugar mills itself at Gin Gin and Isis. They also tried to control the mills of Fairymead and Bingera and CSR (Colonial Sugar Refining.)The Labour government of QLD established sugar price control in 1915 and set up a board of appeal for complaints from growers against the sugar mills. By 1915 Bundaberg was in fierce competition with sugar cane areas in the Far North QLD and the industry was much regulated. But it has survived well to the present day. This has been assisted by a new port at Burnett Heads which was built in 1962.

 

Apart from the sugar industry the growth of Bundaberg has been assisted by mining, fruit and vegetable growing and the development of side products from sugar – molasses and rum distilling. The first rum was distilled from the Millaquin sugar mill in 1888. The town was boosted greatly by the opening of the railway from North Bundaberg to Mt Perry copper mines in 1884 which in turn encouraged the establishment of foundries and works to support the mines in Bundaberg. By the 1880s Bundaberg has some grand buildings appropriate for a regional city. The commercial and civic heart of the town was in Bourbong Street with the Post Office 157 Bourbong St (1891), the War Memorial 180 Bourbong St (1922), the School of Arts building 184 Bourbong St (1889), the former Commercial Bank 191 Bourbong St (1891) etc.
