Syrmaticus reevesii

Origin of "Reeve" (Female):

The term "Reeve" for the female is likely a secondary, related term, possibly derived from "Ree," an old dialect word from the 16th century meaning "frenzied"—referring to the aggressive behaviour of the males during mating (or "lekking"). Another theory suggests it may be a corruption of "shire-reeve" (a feudal officer), perhaps referring to the, at times, plain or uniform appearance of the females compared to the ornate males.

Historical Usage: Ruffs and Reeves were first noted in print in 1634, with the distinct naming convention for the smaller, plainer female (Reeve) versus the larger, dramatic male (Ruff) firmly established in the 17th century.

Dimorphism: The species is highly dimorphic, meaning the males look very different from the females. The female (Reeve) is much smaller than the male and lacks the extravagant, multi-coloured neck feathers that define the male.

Thanks for all your kind comments and Favs, It's most appreciated!

A non-native species, the Muntjack is also known as the barking deer. The male, seen here, has two distinguishing lines that run across the forehead towards the snout. Unfortunately Muntjack can have a profoundly adverse effect on shrubs and ground layers in woodland.

This shrub is growing in my garden for many years, but I am starting to look at the flowers more closely now. Apart from the striking pink, this flower has so many tiny parts to look at....

The Reeves Spirea flower holds immense spiritual significance, which can be seen across various cultures. In Japanese culture, Reeves Spirea flowers are known as 'yuki yanagi' and represent the transience of life, much like the famous cherry blossom. Similarly, in Chinese culture, these flowers are closely associated with the concept of Yin and Yang and are believed to bring balance and harmony to one’s life.

In addition to their cultural significance, Reeves Spirea flowers also have a strong spiritual connection to the natural world. These flowers are often used in herbal medicine to treat various ailments, such as digestive issues and respiratory problems. They are also believed to have a calming effect on the mind and body, making them a popular choice for aromatherapy and relaxation practices.

Furthermore, Reeves Spirea flowers are often used in spiritual rituals and ceremonies, particularly in Native American cultures. They are believed to have the power to cleanse and purify the spirit, and are often used in smudging ceremonies to clear negative energy and promote healing. Overall, the Reeves Spirea flower is a powerful symbol of spiritual growth, transformation, and connection to the natural world.

What Do Reeves Spirea Flowers Symbolize in Literature and Art?

Reeves Spirea flowers have been a popular motif in literature and art for centuries. In Victorian England, these flowers were used as a symbol of love, purity, and innocence, and often featured prominently in poetry and artwork of the time. In modern times, the Reeves Spirea flower continues to be a popular subject for painters and photographers, thanks to its delicate beauty and vibrant pink and white hues.

Reeves Pheasant... Torso puffed up. Tail spread. Wings flapping...putting up the show to impress the female RP appreciating from a distance. The Reeves's pheasant is endemic to evergreen forests of central and eastern China between 1000 to 6000 ft. It is classified as vulnerable due to loss of habitat and overhunting for it's feather which is used in Chinese. opera. RP has the longest tail at 7.9 ft. And it measures 7 ft. Hard to fit into the frame with telephoto lens so this was shot at 270mm
