i always feel at peace among these trees....

At times, hiking through the amazing redwood forest in northern California, we had it all to ourselves. Standing there craning our necks skyward, smelling the sweetness of the air, and feeling the majesty of these incredible trees was truly magical.

A stack of Redwood logs wait to enter the sawmill at Sturgeon's Mill.

A group of redwoods grows near the road I commute on. This fall has been really colorful with all the big leaf maples turning yellow all at once.

Here's another self-portrait panorama... captured in a small redwood forest near where I'm living now.

This species might not be indigenous to South Africa... but the positive natural energy is overwhelming here. This is one of my happy places. :)

Have a lekker weekend everyone!

Okay, here's one last photo from my recent visit to the small redwood plantation here in Bibby's Hoek.

I'll be taking a short break from all social media now. I'll still be taking and/or editing photos (maybe), but this is the last photo that I'll be sharing anywhere this year.

It is one of my favourite photos that I've taken this year though... for obvious reasons. ;)

Happy holidays everyone!

Early morning among the mighty redwood trees. Sunlight streming through the branches makes a nice scene.

The coast redwood is naturalized in New Zealand, notably at Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua. Redwood has been grown in New Zealand plantations for over 100 years, and those planted in New Zealand have higher growth rates than those in California, mainly due to even rainfall distribution through the year.

A trail winds through redwood forest, past ferns and rhodendrons, Del Norte State Park.

As I write this post, it has been a 100+ degree day with wildfire smoke drifting across the Bay Area and mostly forcing us inside — and I know it is much worse in many other parts of California and the West. Barely more than two months ago we walked this coastal trail through redwoods on a cool June morning as fog drifted overhead and rhododendrons bloomed. How long ago that seems now! But looking forward an equal amount of time we can hope that this nasty, dry, hot summer will be behind us and, with luck, autumn rains will return.

Photographing redwood forests can be a tricky thing. Deep in the forest the light can be so low that exposures as long as a second or more a necessary. Meanwhile, even on the most still days there is always a slight bit of air motion, and the long palm fronds and hanging plans are virtually never still. And when the sun rises higher in the sky and sends a few beams of light to the forest floor, the difference between the sunlit spots and the shadows can be huge. In this photograph, in order to produce something that reflects what we see when we look around such a scene, I had to carefully control the brightness of the bits of sky at the top of the photograph and the stray beams of light along the trail… and then ensure that the dark areas were bright enough to make details visible.

Sturgeon's Mill is a restored steam-powered sawmill here in Sonoma County. I went with the Sonoma County Photographers Group from Meetup.com. There were 62 photographers today.

The mill is amazing. It is an experience in sight, sound and feeling too. It operated from 1924 to 1963 sawing redwood logs into lumber. It was restored by the third generation of Sturgeons and a group of volunteers starting in 1993. Today was one of four weekends when they get up the steam and saw lumber here.

“The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.”

― John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America

Perfect weather and light to hike inside Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park this morning

A small amount of fog and a thick Redwood canopy produced a feeling of solitude, despite crowded trails in some places in Muir Woods.

The Redwoods are just awesome. Besides the columbia River Gorge with it's waterfalls I liked the Redwoods the most during our trip along the US west coast. Other than in the Hoh Rainforest even in direct daylight it was possible to capture some of the Redwoods magic. Here the light added just the missing atmosphere.

Tech: this is a pano of three horizontal shots taken at 24mm. If you are interested in my lightweight pano setup have a look at my video here

A closeup of the bark from one of the Redwoods in Muir Woods. These trees were so magical and tall. Can't wait to go back.

The Sun radiates through the patchy dense fog in the redwood forest in the afternoon along a trail in the Redwood National and State Parks area in northwest California. At lower elevations the skies had cleared, but up here on a ridge there were still dense patches, yielding blue sky and just the right thickness of fog to let the forest break the Sun's rays up into individual beams. The peacefulness was as sublime as the quality of light. Because of the fog, everything was slightly wet giving the ferns on the ground a nice sheen. I had never seen light like this before. 95% of this image is a single exposure, with another exposure blended just at the Sun to restore some highlights slightly.

This is actually just a snap from my iPhone 6. I remember back when everyone scoffed at the very idea of putting a camera in a cell phone... and here we are. The location of the image is a little beach just south of Redwood National Park.
