Downy Woodpeckers are fairly small (6 inch length; 15cm) woodpeckers that stay with us during the winter months. Males are distinguished by the red spot on his head, which is lacking in females.

These are the two gulls commonly found in our area, but I've never had the opportunity for a side-by-side comparison before. In fact, they were the only two gulls around. They are standing on rough-surfaced ice.

The larger gull is an adult Herring Gull (Larus argentatus); the smaller is an adult Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis). Ring-billed are very common in the summer; Herring Gulls are not common in the summer.

Their differences are very well seen in this picture: bill colors, leg color, and most obviously their sizes.

When such colourfully dressed people appear and are reflected in a pool of water, it is always worth taking a snapshot. The two straying beach dogs frame the walkers.

It was dark cold, very windy, and threatening rain, and most birds were nowhere to be seen. This Yellow-shafted Flicker (Northern Flicker) flushed from the brush and went to this massive tree trunk, quite a distance away from me.

Zebra longwings (Eurytides marcellus) are arguably our showiest butterflies on the wing - as they flash black & white with red spots like fairies. They are native to Georgia but farther south, though I've seen two locally. This one visiting lantana was living wild after being released at the local nature center. Zebra's are one of our longest-lived butterflies.

I rarely spot one of these beautiful native butterflies, and it's usually in September on white boneset wildflowers. Boneset and goldenrod are tall Fall wildflowers that just started blooming this month. I stopped to photograph a Buckeye on this goldenrod then immediately spotted its nectaring buddy. Common but fun - they rotate on their perches so are good photo subjects. A fresh Summer azure also showed up in-between downpours. in my flower garden, North Georgia

Happy Butterfly Monday!

Dorsal view of our first Black swallowtail of 14 to eclose 8-21-22 - a male! We found him at 7pm ready to fly - they move fast. Just 11 days as a chrysalis. He's not crooked - just posing in the corner of the cage. Off he went over our house!

Update 8-22-22: 2 more today - all males so far & all from green chrysalises!

Update 8-23-22: 1 more today - a 4th male! Maybe most beautiful of all as I had him in my hand for seconds - before he flew!

Update 8-24-22: 5th one today - the first female! All green chrysalises - just one green to go

Happy Butterfly Monday!

We have pretty good luck with canna plants in pots on our little south-facing, part-sun/part-shade terrace. The depth-blurred leaves in the background are not canna leaves; they are the leaves of a potted Hosta of some kind.

Some years, potted cannas have even "wintered-over" on our terrace. This one is new, though, and just did its first bloom. If we snip the dead flowers, our potted cannas bloom from late spring through early autumn. BTW, they are not lilies.

I have called this one a "Canna Italianna" because it is from what the "canna cultivar afficionados" call the Italian Group. I am pretty sure that the one we have is a King Humbert. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canna_%27Yellow_King_Humbert%27

FWIW - Canna plants are not just beautiful. Every part of the plant is seriously useful in some way. To read about 14 different kinds of uses for canna plants, see the Uses section under:

Delias descombesi, the redspot Jezebel is a medium-sized butterfly of the family Pieridae, that is, the yellows and whites.

The Downy is tiny and has a small bill compared to other woodpecker species. Color-wise, it has a white belly with a mostly black back that features streaks and spots of white. Male birds have a distinctive red spot on the back of their head,

Common names - Lady's purse/ slipper flower / pocketbook flower/ Slipperwort/ Pouch

Commonly known as the polka dot plant, this speckled beauty is native to Madagascar and south-east Asia and is a popular garden plant and indoor pot plant due to its dynamic foliage. It is a perennial herb with distinctive coloured spots of various sizes on its leaves and it can grow up to around 30 cm tall and even taller I believe, in the wild. Small, purple flowers appear from late summer through winter. Growing best in warm, shaded areas, with plenty of moisture.

I keep mine in a pot and never allow it to flower/go to seed as unfortunately, this is yet another non-native that likes the Australian conditions very much and is now listed as an environmental weed - it grows really well in our forests, woodlands and along waterways.

Many different cultivars have been created with different foliage colours.

Canna indica var. maculata blooms along an outcrop of basaltic rock near the Miradouro do Cedros in Flores. Also know as Indian shot, this native of South America and the Carribean was introduced in the Azores and has become naturalized in some areas.

A swift change of position ensured I got some side-glint off the 8.55am Preston Docks - Lindsey Oil Refinery discharged bitumen tanks (6E32) as she rounds the curve at Hoghton. This six-spot burnet (Zygaena filipendulae) is one of the many butterflies and moth we came across near the Stora Vika limestone quarry.

This one appears to have barely escaped something, but having damaged a wing severely in thec process. It being almost completely sheared off, this burnet was unable to fly further and facing certain doom.

Regardless of the damage, I must say that this is such a beautiful animal and if you zoom in, you'll see that I was able to catch quite a lot of detail.

A male Black Swallowtail that overwintered with me one year. I raise Black Swallowtails (Papilio polyxenes) in addition to Monarchs ... and we had NEITHER this year. That's a very sad first for us. By "raise" I mean that we plant their host plants & I rely on the wild native butterflies laying eggs in our yard. These swallowtails overwinter here as chrysalises. They are always scarce and I usually get ONE female laying eggs on my fennel plants - half of the chrysalises eclose & fly while half overwinter with me. I think the problem is loss of habitat as our once rural county has been bulldozing every acre they possibly can & stuffing houses together with no yards. Where can their host plants grow??
