How it looked when we got there. Still plenty to do.

A Northern Cardinal perches on a rock, showing the patchy look of its molting season. The mix of bright red and worn feathers gives it a rougher texture than usual.

I photographed this bird in my yard in Arkansas, where it paused just long enough for me to capture the details of its changing plumage. The rock provided a steady perch against the soft green backdrop.

Molting is a natural process where cardinals shed old feathers and grow fresh ones. During this stage they can appear a bit scruffy, but it’s all part of keeping their plumage healthy.
