Unique Class 26 3450 was withdrawn in 2004 and it took a lot of effort to restore it to service in 2018. Whilst it has since hauled a number of passenger services it does not normally get a chance to haul freight. The FarRail tour saw Derick du Toit, owner of the Ceres Rail Company, reach agreement for the locomotive to haul a train consisting mainly of wagons loaded with cement plus several vans giving a total weight of around 690 tons. It is seen here a reaching the 1212ft summit at Mowers, 14 miles east of Worcester on the former New Cape Central Railway on a run to Ashton.

We kick off the New Year with a visit back to a crisp winter's morning in July 2018.

The world-famous Class 26 No. 3450 – affectionately known as the Red Devil – powers out of Ashton after turning on the triangle. Now en route to Robertson, the iconic locomotive is ready to reunite with its train for a scenic day trip to Worcester and back.

*Thank God It's Stinging Nettle Slug Caterpillar Friday

(see adjacent photostream images for others in this series)

Stinging Nettle Slug Caterpillar (Cup Moth, Setora sp., Limacodidae) "Red Devil"

Cup Moth larvae are often highly ornamented and brightly colored. Two main types can be distinguished: larvae armed with rows of protuberances bearing stinging spines called nettle caterpillars, or non-spined forms where the surface of the larvae may by completely smooth, called gelatine caterpillars. The larvae of this family bear no prolegs on their abdominal segments. The larva attaches itself to the substrate by means of an adhesive ventral surface. The movement is like a slug hence their generic name.

A stinging slug caterpillar (like this one) generally bears warning colouration and stinging hairs. These hairs can inject a venom from poison sacs carried at their base that are used as defensive weapons. Reactions can range from a mild itching to a very painful sting.

You will notice I have given each individual a superhero-style name in the title of the image. This is the "Red Devil". There is also a "Yellow Devil" and a "Green Devil", all of which are Setora sp., but whether each is a separate species or perhaps a variation in colouration due to foodplant, for example, is undetermined. This is for my own reference mainly because practically none of these caterpillars are identified (maybe even ever formally) and this will allow me to group the growing number of images I have into their like-kinds including the various instars I have captured. The names will be included as tags.
