ENGLISH FOLLOWS
A chi si è scoperto all'improvviso solo.
#PrayForItaly #TerremotoItalia
[WARNING: a long post, a bit scrappy and very sad, as today is in Italy for the devastating earthquake which killed over 120 people and an unspecified number of animals] Today, on my way back to parents' home, after 45 minutes into the itchy grass 50 metres away from where I grew up, surrounded by more dragonflies than I had never seen and the most beautiful light of the day, I thought that a true home (in fact: our home) looks like a (good) love.
This is where we feel safe, always, and comfortable, even if we are tired, with messy hair and animal-shaped slippers. It is also where we can afford to be at our worst, without masks, constructions and omissions, and, maybe this is why, in the end we can bring out the best; we can be ourselves at our best.
It ss the place that sometimes we feel tight and out of fashion like a coat of a size ago, but actually it warms us up, embraces us, well-worn and aged like us, with us; it is ours like no other cloth ever.
Home is much, much more than walls, concrete and tiles: strangers' eyes see that, but not what's under there - memories, emotions, secrets, unstoppable crying and unstoppable laughter.
It's our Ithaca, to which we return after fighting, after we've lost, after we vowed to never return. And our home is there, waiting for us, because that is what you expect that your home does: being there for you, always, its doors as open arms reday to welcome us.
I thought about all this, lying down in the shadow of my bell tower, the church where I haven't been in for 20 years; but I know it's there. I thought this because I was thinking to those that last night suddenly woke up without a home anymore, one way ticket from dreams to the scariest nightmare of all: reality. To those who have lost everything that home means, made of those that we love and who love us. Our world, our everything.
I can't imagine what it means: I try but I can't do it, because all I see is the emptiness, the darkness - which, for me, are a bit the same thing.
I can't imagine it, but I can't think of anything else. Awakening in the middle of the end of the world. Finding yourself alone. Death, all around you. At the mercy of something so much bigger than us, that in the end are such small, fragile things - just a little less than a dragonfly, and without its mystic magical wings.
Under anguish and pain, I try to let hope breath: so I pray that emergency rescues, who are working restless, can still save lives, to win the battle against those monstrous invisible giants hidden in the shadows; that the survivors can rebuild and be rebuilt, find or create a new place to call home.
Often words are quite useless; perhaps they are useful only when they let us bring outside something too hard and tough to be kept inside ourselves. Photography instead teaches that we need to look for the light, because it's somewhere, even in the darkest hours; that the most beautiful is the last, perhaps because it contains in it the promise of a goodbye, "See you tomorrow!"; in the end, it's a story of hope. All that we need right now. #PrayForItaly
