On 13 September 2011 the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) and The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) organized a seminar with Adam M. Garfinkle, the editor of The American Interest entitled “Central Europe in the U.S. Grand Strategy: on the sidelines or on the rise?”

In the first part of his lecture Mr Garfinkle posed the question, whether the U.S. Grand Strategy does, or has ever existed. Looking back at different phases in the history of American foreign policy from as early as the First World War, Mr Garfinkle concluded, that the U.S. maintained its popularity and leadership position not thank to pursuing an admirable Grand Strategy, but rather on grounds of recursive credibility. Except for a restrained group of professionals directly in charge of foreign and security matters, most American citizens and even politicians wouldn’t be able to identify the Grand Strategy of the US.

Upon coming to the question of the place of Central Europe on the American foreign policy agenda Mr Garfinkle expressed his view with what Mr Zaborowski called “refreshing honesty”: Central Europe is, has never been and will probably never constitute a strategic interest for the U.S. During the Cold War it was dealt with as an adjunct to the USSR, nowadays as an adjunct of the European Union and Russia. The reason for this according to Mr Garfinkiel is that in Central Europe there is simply no sufficient trouble to gain voice and visibility globally: there is neither high-scale terrorism to be countered, no wars to be stopped.

Following the lecture the audience was given the opportunity to address a number of questions to the guest speaker. Mr Garfinkle was asked to outline the U.S. relations with the major poles of influence of the world, like China, Russia and the Middle East

(According to Mr Garfinkle relations with Russia are almost as frozen as during the Cold War, moreover, no spectacular improvement can be expected since “no nation can jump out of its history”. China, despite its spectacular rise, is not seen by the US as a threat at the scale of the Soviet Union formerly. Regarding the policy towards the Middle East, due to the lack of a fundamental understanding of the region itself and its culture, there is also no strategic concept of the U.S. towards this area. Policy is shaped on an ad-hoc basis through by case-by-case decisions.)

Being asked about the position the U.S. would take in the event of a Russian aggression against Poland, Mr Garfinkiel pointed out that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is malfunctional in as much as there is a gap between responsabilities the U.S. nominally assumes and its financial capabilities. Therefore, instead of relying on alliances Poland should rather focus on building its own self-defense capacity. Mr Garfinkle also indicated that the key area of concern for Polish security is Belarus, hence that is where most diplomatic efforts should be invested.

How long can you look at it?

Last weekend (5-7.06.09) I had the marvelously chance to visit Grant Diffendaffer's work shop "Recursive Beads" in Liechtenstein (Switzerland). It was absolutely gorgeous, I've learned so much, and Grant is a very pleadant person and a good teacher.

These beads are not perfect, they are my first tries. They'll become better, I'm sure!!!

yes that's me wearing a shirt of me wearing a shirt of me. i'm writer, producer, director and star of my autobiopic! also my head is lumpy and the shoes look like socks and little-me is wearing tights for prancing around.

Generative masterplanning: some test frames.

Differentiation develops from site fitness, toward a primary use-type, with adjacency effects from neighboring parcels and clustering logics over larger assemblages of cells.

Compared to previous studies, the process here is more emergent, with a more responsive engagement and iterated over a much larger number of frames, allowing the designer the ability to intervene during the process.

The logic resembles that of cellular automata with the additional benefits of 1) being based on real, spatial geometry rather than a grid or regular matrix; 2) utilizing initial conditions that are based on actual site conditions and environmental properties; 3) propagating a more diverse set of influences and reactions; 4) progressing across multiple levels of effects (both scalar and temporal) that allow these effects to be staged in a manner less abstracted and closer to actual design concerns.

The final product is a gift/portal you can step through that will take you through the door right to the event. I have mine here in the skybox you see featured in a lot of my shots. Three prims, and well worth it, I think.

Structure Synth / POV-Ray

1280 x 960 Render Time: 34 hours 26 minutes

I wanted to try a few things in POV-Ray that I couldn't accomplish in Sunflow, namely smoke! I also turned on focal blur, but I'm a little disappointed with the result. I've heard it's a square aperture? It just doesn't quite look right to me.

Is there a "recursive grocery bag" group I can post this to?

It's been a while since I uploaded any of my mosaic portraits, or blended portraits, so I thought I'd give a little peek of what I've been working on. One very good friend from long ago, a dear friend and current roommate, and of course, my indefatigable nieces.

Central Park, NYC. Overlooking the Great Lawn from Belvedere Castle. 26 Feb 2005.

The Equator runs right through the middle of Ecuador and there is a monument on it just a few miles outside of Quito, where I was staying. They call it "Mitad del Mundo" ("Middle of the World") since the Spanish word for equator is "Ecuador" and calling it that would be confusing and potentially lead to some sort of recursive infinite loop that would doom us all. Dangerous stuff, recursion.

Anyway, there is an interactive museum there where you can do bogus goofy "science" experiments that supposedly demonstrate things like how your balance is worse if you stand on the line than if you stand 6 feet to the side, how you can balance an egg on a nail (which a fellow tourist is trying above) on the equator, how water flows straight down a drain on the line, but circles counter-clockwise in the Northern hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern hemisphere (as represented by moving a basin six feet to the north/south of the line).

The last one actually has some truth to it -- the Coriolis Effect -- but it is really only noticable on a large scale, like hurricanes and ocean currents, not by moving six feet off the equator line. It is about as scientific as your average palm reading, but they make a nice show of it. They fill a basin with water, then pull the plug and drop some shredded leaves into it to illustrate the flow of water down the drain. And sure enough, it obligingly circles the pan counter-clockwise 6 feet to the North of the Equator and clockwise 6 feet to the south. The trick is probably done either by adding some spin when you fill the basin, or by rotating the table after filling (under the pretense of getting everyone a better view), or both. There is a good discussion of a similar trick in Kenya here.

The girl in the photo eventually did get her egg to balance, winning a certificate in the process. You know it is real science if you get a certificate -- they can't fake that.

An image is a point of view on the world.

The model village in Godshill is a model of Godshill village itself, and is complete to the extent that the model of the old vicarage has a model village in its garden, and in that model village there is another model village.

You have to resist the temptation to look up just in case you don't happen to be at the top level yourself...

November 2016

Experiments with depictions of 2016 American political leaders - Donald Trump primarily and Hillary Clinton by Artist Oli Goldsmith (oligoldsmith.com/). Most resulting images surround depicting Trump, via digital processing methods similar to 'PhotoMosaic' techniques - as groups of imagery scraped from the web relating to the #Selfie genre of self-portrait snapshot popularized on social media and Instagram.

Other images play with #Trump as #Clinton as #Trump - involving recursive levels of initially producing a selection of images of Clinton made of Trump images, then used as foundation to build new Trump representation.

I will for now at least leave any interpretation of imagery as far as implied meanings etc. to viewer.

I typically lean away from overtly political, heavy-handed 'i mean this you must know and should think so too if possible' messaging in my work. While some of the pieces in this body of experimental digital artworks tend toward a fairly simple reading (yes I am suggesting there may be very little actual difference in meaningful outcomes between candidates in #trump as #clinton as #trump recursive mashups!) hopefully the oddness of the imagery itself and range of #SELFIE related and actual selfie images blend in these pictures in unexpected, possibly awkward ideally non-boring ways!

My work tends towards ambiguous and surrealistic compositions that consciously invite viewers to collaborate in exploring my pictures.

My camera has a "live view" function, such that the scene being exposed to the camera sensor can be viewed on the small screen on the back of the camera body. This "live view" may also be viewed on a larger screen. For example, via HDMI cable out of the camera body into a nearby computer.

But what if the computer screen itself….
