Peregrine Falcon - Falco Peregrinus
The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey (raptor) in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. As is typical of bird-eating raptors, peregrine falcons are sexually dimorphic, with females being considerably larger than males. The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV programme, the highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).
The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species. In fact, the only land-based bird species found over a larger geographic area is not always naturally occurring, but one widely introduced by humans, the rock pigeon, which in turn now supports many peregrine populations as a prey species. The peregrine is a highly successful example of urban wildlife in much of its range, taking advantage of tall buildings as nest sites and an abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks. Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon," referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations. Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; disagreement exists over whether the distinctive Barbary falcon is represented by two subspecies of Falco peregrinus, or is a separate species, F. pelegrinoides. The two species' divergence is relatively recent, during the time of the last ice age, therefore the genetic differential between them (and also the difference in their appearance) is relatively tiny. They are only about 0.6–0.8% genetically differentiated.
While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures. The peregrine falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of the widespread use of certain pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.
The peregrine falcon is a well respected falconry bird due to its strong hunting ability, high trainability, versatility, and – in recent years – availability via captive breeding. It is effective on most game bird species, from small to large.

Taking a rest and take your time does not mean that you are beaten or not in the mood. It means that you recover and do what is right for you.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that one of my hard drive crashed. Well...this is one of the images I was able to recover. Sure...I am $2,500 poorer today...and I would have to put off upgrading my tripod and acquiring a new lens. But I am glad I am able to recover most of my images.

When you are broken, goals are a healing thing. They range from great ones beyond your ability to small ones that are attainable. At some mid point you travel farther afield than local parks and brave small hikes, but getting to them puts me near favorite vantage pointsa that I will visit when I am in their neigbborhood, just because they are always pleasing to this photographer’s eye. Such is the view down one of Raquette Lake’s inlets, a spot of openness from the bridge that crosses the mouth of the stream, a teasing view way back into the wilderness it emerges from. It’s autumn again, and a damp mist settles downward. The main channel carries the oppression of fog and cloud, but darker and deeper, sliding through wetlands on either side. There is a vertical testament to what can grow out there, but underlying it all is water and more water , and to walk into that meadow would be a wet, spongy proposition. Longer nights have slowed the chlorophylls of summer, rusted the low bush, bleached the reeds, and flamed the hillsides. I wish I had a canoe to paddle into the polychromasia. I’d let the full color of it soak into me like an infusion after my forced inactivity of late, the by product of a rebellious body. We think we’re invincible, that nothing is wrong with us until something is wrong. Long ago I was baptized in wilderness, and longer ago than that, in faith. For both I have little fear, but a deep respect. Until our faith is tested, it is an abstract, a theory. And perhaps testing the wild is a test of faith in one’s self. At times, both have caught me off guard. Either one will heal me, and maybe I need each of them these days, while I wander to reconnect to stronger times, drinking deep until my soul is recovered.

this series/'album is titled "guest of the VA". taken a few weeks ago at the VA (veterans administration). you are not supposed to shoot any pictures, especially people and i dont like to shoot people without their permission. all the faces in this series are blocked out. i cheated and shot these photos anyway. i was busted by their security & let off with a warning.
Not enough light (and not enought time) today for good photos but I took this quick snapshot of Tofu for an update after his dental surgery yesterday. He is okay but still recovering. Although only two teeth were removed the whiole procedure turned out to be more complicated and took longer than the vet had expected. I spare you the details. When Tofu returned home yesterday afternoon, he curled up in Fynn's old cat bed which (after all these years) is still the place where he goes when he is in need of comfort. He feels better now, eats well and even wanted to go out into the garden but I decided to keep him indoors today. The problem is that he would eat grass and I don't think that that would be a good idea right now.

Tofu is recovering from the visit of his cousins. He has been good with them (as always) but these visits are still slightly exhausting for him, especially as the cousins are very active during the night and Tofu usually isn't. :)

Well I am finally back from New York! It was one of the best trips I have taken in my entire life. I am working from home today and recovering from all the hiking that I have done. This image is a prime example that subtle HDR is capable to represent the scene in a very realistic manner. Not all HDR images created equally. There are a tons of poorly processed HDR images that give this type of photography a bad name.
This is the world famous Middle Falls at the Letchworth State Park during the most wonderful day of the fall. It was very warm (80F) nice and sunny and very colorful. The park was crowded with people and photographers all over. This park is also known as Grand Canyon East. One of the best parks! I would highly recommend putting this park on your list if you haven't been to it. I can't believe I never went to it and it's only 2.5 hour drive from my house :) Right now it's the best time to see it before all the colorful leaves will vanish like they did by my house already and pretty much over night :(
Once again this is my second HDR vertorama (Vertical Panorama) composed from 6 captures using Hoya ND8 (Neutral Density) dark filter to achieve long exposure and make the water silky smooth. f/22 2"
Also I would like to thank my dear friend Elizabeth from NY for all the assistance and updates regarding the fall foliage at the park. I really appreciate all your help my friend. I enjoyed the park and New York very much :D More images will follow in the near future!
This is as real as it gets... Let me know what you guys think. :)
Have a wonderful day everyone!
